Are Mario's games having more colorful imaginations and less of a deep atmosphere?

You used to have these deep, dreadful atmospheres in early Mario games, such as the castles of older games and the ghost houses. You had to save a damsel from a fearsome beast, and you traveled through the world. Same objective now, but is the atmosphere as daunting? With the recent New Super Mario Brothers, there's pretty much fun in every stage. Everything's happy and colorful, nothing seems daunting until towards the end. Heck, the ENEMIES dance to the music. Not to be a glum person or hater of the games or one of those CoDists, but are Mario games starting to become too colorful from what they started from? What does everybody else feel on this?

First things first:

1: NEVER Make fun of Mario in front of me.
2, Yeah, All the happy outside stages just seem to be too promising.
But I guess the objective for Nintendo Is to make these game for children.
3, The Brand new Wii franchises are talking over.
4, There's fun in every level but: Hard levels, Castles and ghost houses

I actually agree. But I have never actually noticed the lack of darker levels until I read this. Don't really see how having the haunted stages or more evil looking castles with appropriate music would make it any less kid friendly, so why soften it up? I mean, not even having the castles look remotely creepy is an odd choice.

You know, I don't think this is much of a factor to my point of view though, even know, yeah, I think in a way, they have made the Mario series a little more colorful than in the first Mario games on the NES and SNES, but still, I don't think it's that much different, as long you can play on the level like in the NES/SNES versions, I don't really see a problem, although yeah, since the DS version in 2006, we see the enemies "dance" to the music and a lot more things in the games as well, they're making it fit in the rank that Nintendo has it to give it that colorful look to it.

So all and all, As long it still plays as a Mario game it's still a Mario game, at least to my point of view.

I never actually found a difference from the older games and the newer games. If it had the same old platforming it had nearly 25 years ago, I'm perfectly fine with it.

The graphics have changed a lot sure! I do see more color added though because of the graphics in the newer ones VS the older ones. I do see a deep atmosphere though but there has been times when I see the same thing over again. It somewhat confuses me a bit on this subject but I notice tons of stuff when it comes to graphics and colors in awe.

In the early levels, yes it does feel more euphoric. However, by the time I got to the final level of Bowser's Castle it was as daunting as always. I think that the games have gotten more happy to appeal to a younger audience since most of us older kids just play it for familiarity.

I think it is about vibrant environments because it is trying to attract kids to buy it, and they love to see a lot of color, so they get it for their system.

I think that the 2D Mario games are aimed at having more colorful levels and sprites, but the 3D games are aimed at having a deeper atmosphere to look around and explore.
