Introduction
Hello everyone, this is OrdannonsX, and this is my first shot at making a walkthrough of a video game. As some of you might have read in my review of Pokémon Emerald, I've clocked a lot of hours into this game, and now, I want to spice things up a bit. I'm going to attempt to start a new game, and play through the game without my starter Pokémon! Now, this actually impossible to do, as in the beginning of the game you need to use either Treecko, Torchic or Mudkip. So, uh...

CHALLENGE FAILED BEFORE IT BEGAN!!!

Nah, let's not be that harsh. We'll use our chosen starter Pokémon to defeat the attacking Zigzagoon, to beat May, and then to catch our first Pokémon. Afterwards, our challenge commences! Now, this is something I've never done in any Pokémon game before, so I haven't got much experience with this. As such, I will write portions of this walkthrough as I play through the game. Without further ado, let's begin our adventure!

Starting our adventure
Prof. Birch will show up, welcoming you to the game. He will explain certain things about the Pokémon world, and afterwards asks you to tell some things about yourself. First, you'll need to determine whether you want to play as a boy or as a girl. I'll choose the boy, I can identify with the boy more. Then he will immediately ask you what your name is. Naturally, you put in your name, and the game soon begins.

The truck
The first thing you'll hear is the engine sound of a truck. Then the screen shows up. You're standing in the truck next to a closet and some cartboard boxes. Once the rumbling stops, to the right to you an entrance (or exit) appears. Here you might want to change your options (the most important thing to do is to change the text speed to fast) and save your game.  After you've saved, head outside through the exit.

Littleroot Town
You're outside! Isn't the music soothing? Mom will walk approach you, telling you that you've arrived at your new home! She takes you inside your house, where Vigoroth are moving stuff around. After Mom has finished talking, you'll need to walk upstairs and set your clock. It is advisable that you set this at the same time as in the real world. After you set your clock, mom will approach you again, telling you to make sure that you have everything on your desk. Which is the game's way of making sure that you take the Potion from the PC in your room. Walk up to the PC, go to Item Storage, and to Withdraw Item. Select the Potion. Afterwards, return downstairs.

Mom will be watching TV, telling you to come watch as well. She thought Dad would be on, but that's not the case. She will tell you about Prof. Birch. He lives next door, and that you should see him. Exit your house. There are three houses in Littleroot Town. The one you just exited is your house, the one to the right of you is Prof. Birch's house, and the lower building is his Pokémon lab. Enter Porf. Birch's house, and you'll be greeted by Prof. Birch's wife. She tells you she has a daughter/son just about the same age as you. This will be your rival, and the character you didn't pick at the start of your adventure. Go upstairs to introduce yourself. Your rival won't be here, but you'll see a Poké Ball lying on the ground. Approach and examine it. You rival will enter the room, and approach you. Your rival will introduce him/herself to you, and then will take a seat behind the PC. No, you cannot take your rival's Poké Ball. I tried. Exit the house again, and head to the upper-most point of Littleroot Town.

The wild Pokémon
A little girl will stand there, looking towards Route 101. She says she can hear scary Pokémon cries, and asks you if you could look into it for her. Once you walk up a couple of steps, Prof. Birch will jump out of the tall grass and run around with a Zigzagoon chasing him. You'll need to pick a Pokémon and save him. Pick whichever you want, you'll be putting it in your PC soon enough. Once you've picked your Pokémon, the battle will begin.

You'll be facing the Lv 2 Zigzagoon. It shouldn't be too difficult, seeing as your starter Pokémon is Lv 5. You can choose to lower his stats, or attack it head-on. 3 head-on attacks should be enought to take down the Zigzagoon, 4 if it uses Growl to lower your ATK stat. Once you defeated the wild Zigzagoon, Prof. Birch will thank you for saving him, and take you to his lab.

At his lab, he will ask you to nickname your picked Pokémon. It shouldn't really matter. He asks you to meet your rival, to which you could reply to with either 'YES' or 'NO'. Choosing 'NO' causes the game to not let you go further, so pick 'YES'. Go outside, and head outside of town again.

Route 101
Now you're free to train your Pokémon for a while. For the upcoming battle with your rival, I'd recommend you'd train your starter Pokémon to at least Lv 6 so you will have a bit of an advantage over him/her. The Pokémon you can encounter here are Wurmple, Poochyena and the uncommon Zigzagoon. The road to Oldale Town is a zigzag-like route. Take the grassy area to the right of you to reach the town. There are a couple of tutorial guys walking around you can talk to as well.

Oldale Town
Visit the Pokémon Center, and talk to the woman standing next to the house right from you. She's a Poké Mart worker. She'll walk you to the Poké Mart, and gives you a free potion as a promotional item. You have some money, so you could walk inside to buy some more if you want. The route to the left is blocked by some guy who wants to draw what he thinks is a footprint of a Pokémon, so we can't go there yet. Head upwards to Route 103.

Route 103
Here you'll find the same Pokémon as in Route 101, with the addition to Wingull, a very handy Pokémon to have if you train it well. Keep going upwards untill you meet your rival. You'll startle him/her, and afterwards your first trainer battle commences!

The first battle with your rival
This might prove to be a challenge, but you should have at least two potions. She'll have a Torchic if you picked Treecko, a Mudkip if you picked Torchic, and Treecko if you picked Mudkip. Remember, a stat decreaser can give you a major advantage over the opponent! If you've trained your Pokémon a bit, a hit or 4 will take your rival's Pokémon down.

After the battle, your rival will return down to Prof. Birch's lab in Littleroot Town. You will need to follow her/him yourself. Keep going down, through Oldale town. Heal your Pokémon at the Poké Center if you wish. Exit Oldale Town at the south. Your rival will be waiting for you there, saying it's only a short way from there. She/he'll continue walking down Route 101 towards Littlerood Town, so follow her/him. Once in Littleroot Town, head to the Pokémon lab. The game will take you to Prof. Birch and May, who are in the back. Prof. Birch will complement you on beating your rival on your first try (with
your rival standing right there. How thoughtful of him) and convincing you to take the Pokémon Gym challenge. He'll give you a Pokédex, and your rival will give you five Poké Balls. Now you're off to catch 'em all! (well, not with five Poké Balls of course, but you get what I mean)

Exit Prof. Birch's lab, and walk upwards. Mom will stand in front of your house. Approach her yourself or let her approach you by continueing upwards. Mom will give you the handy Running Shoes. She will walk inside the house again, and you're off.

Catching Pokémon!
Head (run xD) towards Route 101. You could catch some Pokémon here, but I have a better plan. Pass Oldale Town, and enter Route 103. Here, you can find Wingull. Wingull is a great choice for a party Pokémon, at least early in the game. A trained Wingull will make quick work of Gym Leader Roxanne (beingpart water type), and will utterly demolish Gym Leader Brawly (being part flying type). With a bit of luck, you will even encounter one here at Lv 4. You may also want to catch a Zigzagoon. It's not a great figther (it's a bad one either), but its Pickup ability causes Zigzagoon to pick up items as you move around. Can you say "free Potions"? Once you have a Wingull, second-hand train it (put it in the front of your party, then switch it with Treecko in battle) until about Lv 6-8.

Once you've trained Wingull (or any Pokémon you've cought, really. Wingull is only my recommendation) stock up on some more potions at the Poké Mart in Oldale Town. Buying some Poké Balls might come in handy too (buy 10 or more Poké Balls at once and you'll be given a free Premier Ball. It's the exact same thing as a regular Poké Ball, but it looks somewhat flashier). Once you've done this, it's time to (oh, my heart...) ditch your starter Pokémon. Visit the Poké Center and use the PC. Select Someone's PC, thent o Deposit Pokémon. Select your starter Pokémon, and select Store. Or do what I did, select Release. That way I'm not tempted to ever put my starter Pokémon in my party. So, released the starter Pokémon I did, and I saved the game afterwards (bye bye, Treecko!).

Our challenge commences!

Route 102
In Oldale Town, walk to the exit on the left. The guy who was sketching just now has left. Apparently, it was just his own footprints he was sketching. What a chump. Anyway, you'll be in Route 102. Remember, if you caught a Zigzagoon, be sure to check on it every once in a while! With every step you take, there is a small chance he'll pick up an item. It's really useful. There are some trainers you can battle here.

There's one who has one Lv 5 Poochyena; there's one who has two Lv 4 Wurmples; a guy who has a Lv 4 Zigzagoon and a Lv 3 Taillow (watch out if you lower its HP. It's ATK stat will raise); and a girl who has a Lv 4 Zigzagoon and a Lv 4 Shroomish (this one may be a little annoying. Attacking it with a physical attack might cause your Pokémon to become Paralyzed). The little kid in the tall grass is not a trainer, so don't worry about him.

Aside from the trainers, there are some other things you can find on Route 102. There's the small chance you'll run into a Ralts in the tall grass. Ralts can only be found on Route 102, and are very rare. But I highly recommend it for a party Pokémon. Its only movie is Growl at the start, but luckily there's second-hand training. You can also find the somewhat uncommon Lotad here. Put it in your party if you feel like it, but it's nothing special if you ask me. Furthermore, there are two Berry trees found here, be sure to pick them up. There's always more than one Berry on each tree, so once you pluck the tree, examine the soil to place one Berry back again to let it grown into a tree again. This way, you'll get a nice berry collection. Lastly, when you head down from where the female trainer is standing, you can find a Potion beneath a ledge.

Once you feel like progressing, walk to the left from the female trainer into town.

Petalburg City
Gosh, I love this city's theme music. First, heal at a Poké Center, your Pokémon are probably hurt. If not, nice fighting. Outside, you'll see a woman restlessly wander around a three-way crossing. When you talk to her, she'll tell you about Wally. You'll meet him in a second. You'll want to go to the Pokémon Gym here. There's a guy left from the gym who would take you there as well, if you talk to him. Anyway, enter the Pokémon Gym. The man inside is no one less than your father, Norman! Norman is delighted to discover you're on a Pokémon journey. Soon, Wally walks in, asking Norman for a Pokémon. Norman sends Wally along with you with a Pokémon of his own, and you'll automatically take him to outside the city. Here, Barry will catch a Pokémon (it's like a tutorial for you on how to catch one), and you will be warped back to the Gym. Barry walks out, leaving for Verdanturf Town. Norman will tell you to head to Rustboro City, to challenge the first Gym Leader there. Head outside, and turn left, head out of the city.

You'll run into a mysterious figure here. He's roaming the region in search of hot-shot trainers. He was thinking you would be one, but you're probably still a rookie, because apparently, you don't look that tough (what nerve). He walks on. But don't worry, you'll see him again!

Route 104
There are two different routes you could take to reach the forest. You could go through the tall grass (you could catch the quite common Marill here. It's not a very good fighter, but if you manage to train it to Lv 18, it'll evolve into the quite powerful Azumarill. A good choice for a party Pokémon), or take the beach and run into a trainer. There's this guy with a Lv 5 Zigzagoon and a Lv 7 (!!) Seedot. Seedot is tough nut to crack. It has a respectable defense, and this attack called Bide. Don't attack any Pokémon that's just used Bide!! If it holds out for two turns, the Pokémon will strike back with double the force your last two attacks had combined.

There's the classic, always-returning fisherman who thinks he has hooked a really powerful Pokémon, but it's just a Magikarp. It will be at Lv 9, the highest level Pokémon you've faced yet, but don't worry. You can't lose. There's also a woman who has one Lv 7 Zigzagoon. There are two Berry trees here, be sure to pick them up and put one Berry back in its place. Also, there's a cottage here.

This is where Mr. Briney lives. He's not in his house right now, though, but we'll meet him later on. If you haven't done it already, now would be a good time to head back to the Poké Mart and use that money you received from the defeated trainers to buy yourself some Antidotes and maybe some Parlyz Heals. You'll need it in the forest. When you feel like progressing, head past the lady you just beat, into the forest.

UPDATE: I forgot, you could also catch a Taillow here. You might want to think about it, Taillow is a good choice for a party Pokémon. Like I said earlier in this walkthrough, once its HP gets low, its ATK stat raises.

Petalburg Woods
Oooh, scary dark forest... Move to your left, and you'll walk into a trainer. Apparently, he caught a whole bunch of Pokémon. He has four Lv 3 Wurmple. Stomp 'em good. In the corner of the grassy area you found the him in, there's a Poké Ball. It's the item Parlyz Heal. Follow the path past the tall grass, and eventually you'll meet a sharp dressed man in green. He's apparently looking out for the Pokémon Shroomish. Soon after you'll be introduced by Team Aqua. He's been waiting to ambush this guy in green forever, but got tired of waiting, so he decided to attack him head on. Bad luck for him that you're here, right? The guy in green asks you to protect him, and so the Aqua goon challenges you to a Pokémon battle.

The Team Aqua Grunt
Even though these Grunts usually don't pose much of a threat, this could actually be your most difficult battle up until now. He has a Lv 9 Poochyena, which could really surprise you if you treat this like any other wild Pokémon battle. Poochyena has a decent ATK stat, and can use Howl to increase his ATK stat further. However, other than Howl, it hasn't got any other attack other than Tackle. If you caught a Wingull, it should have Supersonic already. I'd advice you to use confuse Poochyena with it first, then attack away with Water Gun. If you didn't catch a Wingull, use any other Pokémon (maybe use Tail Whip to your advantage, Growl would be totally useless here) and have a Potion ready.

After you beat the Grunt, he'll back off and scurry away. The guy in green thanks you, and rewards you with a Great Ball! Neat! You'll love this baby, it has twice the success rate of a Poké Ball. Afterwards, the guy in green runs off as well, the same way as the Aqua Grunt went. Keep following the path you were going in initially, untill you reach the next body of tall grass. It has an empty spot in the lower-left corner of it. Examine it, and you'll find a Poké Ball. It never hurts to have an extra Poké Ball at hand.

Walk upwards and challenge the trainer to a battle. You might want to be careful against this guy, he has two Lv 6 Nincada. But as long as you have a water Pokémon (Wingull! ) This shouldn't be much of a problem. Above the trainer you'll find another Poké Ball item, this one holds an Ether. It's a useful item that recovers a move's PP. Walk to the right, and you've reached the forest exit! You could walk even further, but that route is blocked off by two odd trees. You'll learn how to remove them later on.

Now that you're in the Woods' last body of grass, why not search for some Pokémon?

OrdannonsX : Holy smokes! Someone has tried this, a no-starter challenge?! I had not considered this ever, but I suppose it's a challenge worth trying. It's more enticing the more I think about it! Maybe I'll try it sometime.
