So I'm thinking about getting a Nintendo DS. See, my husband has an XBox 360, but I'm not a fan of FPS and we can't find any rpg's that aren't linear and DON'T have magic. In fact, we can't really find any suitable games for me at all on the XBox 360. Well, we were looking at the games in Wal- Mart two days ago, and just by looking at the game covers, I felt that the 3DS and DS had the games I could possibly enjoy the most. However, we weren't really sure which system would be better to get because it's been a LONG, long time since I've had a handhold. Actually, I never had one myself truth be told, and I just got to occasionally borrow my younger sister's GBA. Well, I don't want to spend almost $150 and then find games I don't enjoy or can't play. Is there any advice on what games I could safely play? I don't like to play any games that are ridiculously 'kiddy' in nature, and I also will NOT play games with magic or supernatural things in them. I love games which are non- linear, and I love games even more where exploration is a possibility. Can you guys help me out so I can decide if this is a purchase I want to make? I also don't play games much because I'm so busy, so that's weighing heavy on my decision. Well, if you get a 3DS, you can play normal DS games, so even though a normal DS would be lots cheaper, no new games would get released. But with the 3DS, it's not like there have been that many great games for it yet, and you don't know what games will be released. But with it being Nintendo, you know what kind of games there will be. So I would pick the 3DS, but I would actually go with the XL version. It is a pretty big improvement over the normal one. Less glare, it stays cleaner, and a few other things. And it isn't that much more, so I think that would be the best system that you could get. |

I agree; the best thing to do, at this point, would be to get the 3DS. However, the handheld is rather expensive for the casual player, and especially so for someone who is not sure how often they would want to play. On the subject of particular games, I have nothing to add. In my experience, nonlinear games are hard to find in the realm of handheld systems, and that's before you add the qualifier of one that does not hold supernatural or magical elements. No games come to mind that fit these parameters. Personally, since you have already learned that the XBox is not for you, I would find a way to try a PS3 system out. They have quite a few companies making games exclusive to their system, and PlayStation has an altogether different vibe to it. The cost is more, or perhaps almost equally as, prohibitive than the 3DS. I cannot offer any game suggestions there, as too many of the games I prefer contain elements that at least hint at magic or the supernatural. I hope I've helped! |

Both users have said many good points to why getting a 3DS would be better than just a normal DS, but allow me to add this: The 3DS also has an online shop for you to purchase other games. Some are basic and simple, similar to cell phone games, but others you might end up finding interesting and a nice breather from your normal gaming. Not to mention you get access to downloading demos of games coming out. Also, you can purchase older games, similar to what you might find on vizzed, from the NES and game boy era up to the game boy advanced era! I personally, don't buy many games at the shop, but do get free ones from Club Nintendo every now and then (another perk!) Some games I enjoy when not in the mood to play my cartridge games, include Solitaire and Dr. Mario, though I was looking into getting Tetris party as you can play with others online with that (or so I heard). You also can go online with the 3DS, though it is a little limited; no youtube or heavy image sites work with it unfortunately. Also, if you have Netflix or plan on it, the 3DS can stream Netflix videos, another wonderful thing. When I had Netflix, I enjoyed watching it on my 3DS from my bed or while I was grinding in an MMO I used to play. The 3DS also has an online shop for you to purchase other games. If you're just looking at DS vs. 3DS, the choice is obvious. The DS allows you to play DS games (and unless you get a pre-DSi version... that's pretty much it). A 3DS does everything a DSi can do but also plays 3DS games. Just with the DS library, you probably will have some decent options... but I would recommend researching some games themselves to make sure you can find a decent amount of DS games that you actually wanna play. If you're unsure about some specific titles or want more info, you could try asking here for input.
If you know you'll like some DS games, then your 3DS will play them and any future games that come out on that system. I know this has all already been said, but I just wanna emphasize that point like I do when I'm selling systems to customers... its backwards compatibility is where it really shines. There's all this potential with new games and you can play older ones as well. As rusen noted, there's also downloadable games. I actually found a really neat RPG for just $8 that I've been playing the heck out of lately. Though it doesn't fit into your criteria, there's a good chance they have other games there that do. So in addition to retail games, it's nice to have the option to play download-only games that companies put out there but aren't willing to actually waste packaging on. They're inexpensive and yet still fun. Really the only reason to ever take a regular DS over a 3DS is if you were REALLY tight on money and had no intention of playing newer games. It is hard to find a game without magic. It's a RPG standard and RPGs are the games you'll most likely see exploration elements in. Japan is fascinated with magic, so 99% of their RPGs have magic in it. Even a lot of western games have SOME supernatural elements in them. Though it doesn't seem like Mass Effect (from what little I've played of the first) seems to really have magic per se... but that's moot since it's a PC/Console game and wouldn't be found on a DS.
There are probably a few other series that take a more real-world approach to things, but they are by far the minority. Magic is a favorite to use in combat so you're basically looking for games that don't involve any sort of combat here. Those do of course exist. Now, Singelli, if Sonic isn't your thing (though I do find the handheld Sonic games to be more manageable than 3D ones), there are still other platformers that may work. Basic stuff like Mario or Kirby or what have you can still be enjoyable games. I'm not much help on suggesting games that meet your criteria, because I really go for the magical fantasy stuff >.> uh... all I have that's not that is Sonic Rush, Mario Tennis, and Phoenix Wright XD But either way, games ARE out there if you know where to look anyway. Some good reccomendations, and most for the 3ds. I'll agree with the crowd on this one, for a few reasons (which have mostly been mentioned).
1. More diverse game choices. Lots of the Nintendo games are either FPS, or have magic. That being said, there are quite a few games without magic. I think the 3ds would be best, if only because of the backwards compatability feature. 2. Internet. While the internet is worse than on just about any other device, it still has internet. That's better than any nintendo handheld other than the dsi. 3. Price. The games for the 3ds are quite expensive, with new release prices usually around $40. There are a few games which have been around long enough to have lowered prices though. 4. Quality. No question, the 3ds has much higher quality graphics than any other nintendo handheld. If you play a ds game on the 3ds, you'll see what I'm talking about. So, I'd say 3ds is the way to go, despite the prices... If you want to compare the 3ds to the dsi, look here Hope this helped and was what you were looking for! 1. More diverse game choices. Lots of the Nintendo games are either FPS, or have magic. I think the 3ds is a disappointment except for few games. And last time I checked the 3ds only has more that 100 games to choose from. And from the ones I played kid Icarus uprising was the best but you don't like magic. I liked the cartoonnetwork game but it might be too kiddy for you. Heroes of ruin was by far the worst game I ever played. It took me one day to beat. Almost no replay value. And the chat lagged. And barley anyone was online playing when I was. Et was better. Super Mario 3d land was ok and Mario kart 7 was pretty good. The ds had good games too. I like the dragon quest games for the ds but again you not like magic. I also like pokemon soul silver but pokemon is basically magic. Both didnt have many good features besides netflicks. Overall the 3ds was a disappointment but the ds was ok but not great. Wow! The advice here has been so... SO great! It's been much greater than I expected, and thank you to EVERYONE that has posted here. That being said, I really do need to make a clarification. hehe. TOTALLY not your guys' fault after I went back and read my original post... I wasn't that clear. We had already chosen between the DS and the 3DS because of price. We don't really have a lot of spare money floating around, and my husband wanted to get TWO of them so that we could play together. Personally, I'm not too keen on buying two, but if that's what he wants..... I was more interested in hearing game suggestions, to see if spending this much money would even be worth the little time I'd be spending on the handheld. However, it's probably a good thing that my post was not clear because you all have convinced me that getting a 3DS would be worth the extra bit of money. So I've talked to Jason and that's what we'll be getting if we do decide to go through with the purchase. Also, let me clarify that I WILL play games that aren't rpg's... those are just my favorite. I also like puzzle games. Of top priority in ANY game though, is replay value, and time it takes to beat the game. I'd HATE to buy all games that can be beaten in one day to a week. I like games that take a really, really long time to beat. I've been reading over your game suggestions though... any more out there? I had NO idea handhelds could do so much now. As I said, the last one I had ANY experience with what the GBA. I'm wow'd by the fact that the 3DS does SO much. Midoriko : Can you tell me more about your own suggestion on the PS3? I looked them up, but I didn't see any that were the same price as a 3DS. LOL That being said, I really do need to make a clarification. hehe. LOL |

Oh, whoops. I missed a few replies and didn't notice them until after I posted. I would have just edited the last post, but summons won't work then. Frodlex: Not a big fan of fighting games, sorry. MegaRevolution1: Before you keep calling people out as hypocrites, why don't you stop taking every post as an opportunity to subtly attack people you don't like. Hardly any of your post was actually giving advice and instead trying to point out people's possible flaws. Second of all, my husband doesn't know how to remove games from his profile yet, because he's hardly on here anymore. There's no way to tell if a game is acceptable to us without either playing it or researching it. He opened them, played them for long enough to see it wasn't his kind of game, and then never played them again. Who are you to judge? Third of all, I never said I had a problem with shooters. I just don't like them. Can you please stop trying to turn every one of my threads into a debate on what I believe and you disagree with? If you have an issue with my choices, pm me..... I've asked this of you before. Crazy Li : Yes, Harvest Moon is a farming game. I actually did enjoy that game for the few minutes I played it. Is it available on 3DS? Sonic games can be fun, but I simply am no good at playing them because of how fast they go. I mean, I suck at most games, even at normal speed. LOL How much better are the ones you're talking about? Oh, and thank you for your post. If anyone keeps trying to turn this into a debate, can you close this for me? It gets a little old. If you have to close this thread, I ask that any future advice on the 3DS and games is pm'd to me. Frodlex: Not a big fan of fighting games, sorry. Mega: Unless you can give me a good reason to, I will not edit my post. If this was a first offense, I'd be willing to say "Yeah, you made a mistake, no biggie." However, this is more habit than anything, and I'm not going to cover up your tracks for you. You're afraid people will see how you behaved? Well maybe they ought to. Your personal attacks are not 'mistakes'. They're intentional, they're overdone, and they need to stop. I have no shame in letting other people see what -I- wrote. I'm not going to edit it. If you'd like you can get a mod to edit it, but there was nothing wrong in my response to you. In fact, I was kind. If you don't want people to see you act that way, it's simple: Practice NOT making a habit of it.... please don't ask people to cover your tracks for you. It wasn't a mistake and you know it. Mistakes happen on occasion. And if you want to insist it was a mistake, part of maturing is realizing your mistakes, admitting to them, and learning from them.... not sweeping them under the rug. I have always treated you with kindness and forgiveness to my recollection, and if I haven't I apologize. However, enough is enough. Feel free to post in my threads. Just please be a little more sensible about it. -Think- before you hit the submit button. Don't take every post as an attack on your self. If your reaction is to post defensively, you've probably misread or misinterpreted what I wrote. I'm not mad at you... I'm not chiding you. I'm just trying to offer you some friendly advice. If you felt remorse, then we can act on that, and I accept your apology. Thank you for being a big enough person to realize that what you said was not fair. Don't take this post to heart, and have a very nice day, alright? Go play some sonic or something. Tell ya what... find me a sonic game that isn't so fast and I'll give it a whirl just for you. *hugs* Back to topic, everyone? I have no shame in letting other people see what -I- wrote. I am glad to know you like puzzle games, as my mother has a whole collection of them that I can pass on to you! One of the big ones she likes is not simply a puzzle game, but a brain teaser game, Brain Age and Brain Age 2! They help keep your memory fresh, mind sharp, all with little memory tasks or things that build up your brain power. They even have little 5 minute things you could do daily as a mind exercise. If you happen to love sudoku, they have a section for that, or do what I did on the 3DS and download that portion onto the portable. Mom also has Big Brain Academy, but did not care for it as much. I think it was because the tasks felt really dumb, even if they helped exercise the mind. Looking through her DS collection, she also has Professor Layton: Unwound Future (She never got into that though), Think Smart, Sudoku Mania, Sudokuro, Best of Tests DS, Flash Focus (Eye training), and Mah Jong Quest: Expeditions. She also has 50 classic games disk, which I think is mainly games like Pacman, original tetris, Galaga and so on. Singelli : Honestly I would say that in order to play together you probably want a 3DS even though they are more expensive. If the 3D bothers you you can just turn it down.
They have the online store and the "street pass" or whatever it's called if you keep it on in public, you will find new people to play with. A pretty neat feature. That being said, as a huge fan of RPG's pretty much my whole life, it's going to be hard to find games in that Genre that don't use some sort of "magic" in them. The whole Genre is pretty much focused around that sort of thing. Anyways, what are your thoughts on "Powerups" like the fire-flower in Mario? The reason I ask is because the Mario & Luigi DS/GBA games are a pretty fun "RPG" style game with minimal magic (That I can remember anyways) They have the online store and the "street pass" or whatever it's called if you keep it on in public, you will find new people to play with. Singelli : Please don't make this more confrontational than it needs to be. Mega withdrew her comment. You don't need to continue a fight with her. Maybe the fact that she withdrew it in itself is a sign that she's trying to change. You should give her a chance rather than bring up the past. Isn't there something in your Bible about forgiveness?
Back to the topic... I believe there have been regular DS Harvest Moon games and I wouldn't be surprised to see the series continue on the 3DS. There's no reason for them not to continue to make games on the new handheld so expect to see some in the near future. Popeye116 : I would have to disagree with GBA being a reason for the regular DS. She can play GBA games here. Why buy a handheld if that's the primary selling point? And of course the DS has more games for it than the 3DS. The regular DS has been around for 8 years. The 3DS has only been around for two. How can they make more games in two years than in eight? Just give it time. 5-6 years down the road, there will be as close to as many--if not more--3DS games than DS games and the 3DS will still be able to play all those older DS games in addition to the 3DS ones. Singelli : Sorry that it's taken me a while to return to this topic. My suggestion on the PS3 came out of nowhere, I admit, I just really find that I like the game play, and when I saw that you had already given the XBox a whirl, I'd thought add that suggestion. I don't know how cheaply you can find either of these two products, but I spotted a new 3DS at about one hundred fifty dollars, and I found a refurbished PS3 (look at all the threes!) at one hundred ninety-nine dollars. I think that's about how much I got mine brand new, but that's because my mother stayed in line at one of those Black Friday electronic sales three years ago, back in '09. The pros about getting a PS3 range from the simple, like the free access to PlayStation Network versus the one you have to pay for with the XBox, to the more complex, such as the PS3's ability to play Blu Ray discs, although the XBox 360 might be able to do that now. I simply spam Netflix on my system more than anything else. Yes, that's right: if you have a Netflix account, you can download this little app straight onto your PS3 and then watch it on your television. Once again, I'm not familiar with the XBox 360, but I'm certain it already has this option... But it's still a good part of the system. Many people argue that the graphics of the XBox 360 is better than that of the PS3, but I honestly just can't see it. Maybe it's because I haven't given the XBox a long enough try, or that, since I hate first-person shooter games, I haven't tried to play the games that display its true superiority. Whatever the case, I prefer the PS3's graphics. On to the games themselves! As before, the line between magic and not magic is hard to blur. I don't know how you feel about science that explains "magical" phenomena, or science that is so advanced that it might as well be magic to our society today, but those are the games that I prefer. Keeping that in mind, I like playing some of the more basic and well-known games, such as Infamous (but not Infamous 2--I haven't played that yet and can't quite tell you about it), which has a man with superpowers that are completely explained by scientific means, or the Assassin's Creed line that has you battling enemies in your ancestor's past through the use of a breakthrough machine. If I wanted to stretch your patience further, I would suggest Dead Space, but the entire premise is run by what amounts to magic, though there isn't much (that I know of) that you or anyone around you really uses. I found some other nonlinear games, but I cannot warn you nor support them:Oblivion, Fallout 3, God of War 3, and Red Dead Redemption. I am not an expert in video games, I am more of a casual user than anything else. That being said, I am not quite on the same wavelength as you, and your particular interest in games, while not different, cuts out an entire genre that I find myself enthralled by. I suggested the PS3 as a passing statement, and that was my mistake, but I said that so that, if you chose to go ahead and buy one, you would open up another thread and ask more experienced gamers. My apologies. I also apologize for sounding like a PlayStation representative or something... I swear I usually sound more intelligent in my posts.
