Today, I'll be reviewing a NES classic, Mega Man 2! Mega Man 2 is the sequel to Mega Man and improves on the previous title. It's generally regarded as the greatest Mega Man title in the Classic series and for good reason. It follows the non-linear gameplay of it's predeccesor as well as getting weapons from the Robot Masters that are the weakness of another Robot Master. So, let's get started. Story - 6.0
The story is pretty weak. Dr. Wily, the antagonist from the last game, has created 8 new robot masters to take over the world. Mega Man, the protaganist, has to take down those Robot Masters, head to Dr.Wily's fortress, and stop him. Like most NES games, it doesn't really have a huge storyline so I'll cut it some slack and leave it with a 6.0.
Graphics - 8.5
The graphics are pretty good for NES games. Mega Man looks quite nice and the Robot Master's sprites reflect all of their designs and so do the enemies. The stages look nice and you can always tell what things are, so, the graphics are pretty good and warrant a 8.5.
Sound - 10
The Mega Man series is known for it's amazing and catchy music that plays throughout the stages and this game has that. Every song in the game is memorable and if you were to ask me to hum anything from this game, I would be able to. The sound effects are pretty nice. Mega Man's gun shots have a memorable sound and it's pretty good.
Addictiveness - 8.5
The game is easy to pick up and can be sometimes hard to put down. Considering the good level design, it should keep you stuck with game since it's nearly perfect. All of the different tricks and glitches can also help keep you in. It's a fun game that is extremely hard to put down.
My Problems One of my problems with the game is the weapons. A lot of the weapons are overshadowed by the overpowered Metal Blade. The Metal Blade takes down 4 Robot Masters down, is helpful to take down most enemies, and is just generally broken. All the other weapons have their uses but are just pointless due to the overpowered Metal Blade. It's just a little bothersome. I also hate the constant flicker that happens when too many things are on screen. For example, in Metal Man's stage, the spiked drop things, cause flickering and it makes the game slow and Mega Man goes invisible and it bothers me.
Controls - 9.5 The game has the same tight controls of the previous game and controlling Mega Man is simple and easy to handle. The jumping mechanics work and you move quite easily. I love the controls since they work well and they deserve a 9.5.
Difficulty - 7.5
This game is pretty hard due to how the levels are designed and how bosses are. However, I gave it a lower score due to it being, in my opinion, a step-down from the Hell that is Mega Man 1.Sure you got Quick Man and his stage with the insta-kill lasers, but they can both be easy to get through by just using the Time Stopper on the lasers and then grind near Quick Man's boss door to take down half his health. The first one had the Yellow Devil, Elec Man's stage and himself, Ice Man's disappearing blocks over nothing area, the Big One-eyed Red thing that appears in nearly every stage, etc;. They really just downed the difficulty and I dislike that.
Conclusion Mega Man 2 is a solid and excellent game with tight controls, an excellent soundtrack, great graphics, and an orignal non-linear style. I recommend this game to anyone who enjoys classic games and is enjoyable. However, I don't regard this to be the best Mega Man title even though it's great. I'll be getting to the best next time, but this game deserves a 9.5. Today, I'll be reviewing a NES classic, Mega Man 2! Mega Man 2 is the sequel to Mega Man and improves on the previous title.
