Sega will release a handheld in 2009 called the Sega Vision.

It'll be a strong competitor to the PSP and like the PSP it is a multi-media device but can do even more than the PSP.

Article can be found here
http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/10/03/sega_vision/

Brief list of it's features:
Java Games (good for homebrew and emulation)
TV Tuner (so you can watch live tv on it)
Movie Player
Music Player
Built in Digital Camera
Built in Video Camera
Voice Recorder
Digital Book Read

I'm not sure whether they'll be making custom games for it and how powerful it'll be but hopefully they make the right choices with this thing and make it something more than an all-in-1 device but also make it great for gaming.

I'm not sure if this will be very popular or stand a chance to the PSP or the DS but I'll probably get one anyway. And since it'll play Java stuff, you can expect some gaming emulators to be available for it right away (nes, turbo grafx, snes, genesis, gba, and maybe even n64). Now the only issue is price, if they can keep it at $100 or less, than I think this could be pretty good for those who want the features this offers in a portable device but don't have the money that some devices out there charge.

EDIT: Found a video of it here:
http://www.gametrailers.com/player/usermovies/273863.html
Doesn't look like the most attractive handheld in the world but the screen looks big compared to the overall size of the unit but I think the unit itself is pretty small/pocket size.

Thats pretty cool. Not many things have an integrated tv tuner anymore. Definatly a key selling point.

I'm really stumped by this, at first I was all "Haha, Sega back in hardware business? Totally fake" then I was all "Wait what? This is the real deal?" and then I was "It will only use Java for games?".

In short: Definitely interested, will probably not buy it though.

"JigSaw and myself have come to the conclusion that the reddit site sucks. They're also incredibly rude, very liberal and die hard athiests."

THAT sounds like my cue! :3

Same here, I'd buy it to support sega. But yeah, it does sound like it'll only play Java games but that's perfect for homebrew though, basically it'll be meant for playing roms and homebrew and user created games.

But besides the gaming functionality, the other features are just as cool in my opinion, especially the TV Tuner.

It actualy looks pretty limited in its game playing capabilities as it looks like there are only around 6 or 7 buttons all on the one side of the console. but i guess maybe if you turn it on its side you could but then the button layout doesnt fit either. but good to see sega wants back into the big leagues.

The TV tuner will be useless in the US though! We are losing our analog signals, not that you get much on them anyway. I mean I use the tuner on my phone to catch the news here and there, but not much more then that because the most I get at one time is 7 channels and that'll be over in June or July when it goes all Digital.

That sucks. No more TV Tuner. I was looking forward to watching Cartoon Network without using a TV. Anyway, this would be perfect for playing games from the NES games room and Super Smash Flash 2.
