Ok, I promised this review, so here’s my most effort put into it, kind of. I lost the other copy of the review I was working on, so it may or may not be as good as I was hoping it would be .
So, to sum up the story, you’re a Tasmanian Tiger, the LAST Tasmanian Tiger, and you’re told by an ancient spirit of how your species was whipped out, which was the work of Boss Cass. They are all trapped in a portal dimension with no escape (from the inside), and you need to rescue them. They were trapped there mainly because they were fighting against Cass because he wanted to have his own kingdom in which is all ruled under a modern civilization like landscape, as opposed to keeping and preserving the wildlife and the rainforest like land in which they already inhabit. With your two boomerangs, you can instantly leap into action and go rescue your Thylacine friends!
(Just a little tip before I go into any more information, the term “Thylacine” is the scientific name of the Tasmanian Tiger. So keep this in mind, as I might end up using it quite a lot in this review.)

Now, the reason why I love this series so much is because it’s very similar to the Sonic the Hedgehog series. Some of these similarities include how Boss Cass and Dr Robotnik basically have the main goals, which are to go and turn the wildlife biome into a modern industrialization landscape. Another includes the pre-release concept art, which included Ty having green shorts and shoes that slightly resembled Sonic’s, but this was changed in the end, and Ty was left with Red shorts and no shoes. There is also a robotic character named Cy that was planned to be Ty’s new rival in the second game, and I’m sure you can figure out how that resembles the Sonic series . There are quite a lot more little hidden references throughout this game too that you can find after playing it for awhile, but these are just the major ones.

Now, due to there being a lot more levels in this game than in any of the Sonic games, and since some of these have a couple of changes, I’ll be excluding the level summary/review part in this. But just to give you an idea, the levels include a normal desert like outback, an ocean side, a rainforest, a snowy mountaintop, and the regular little forests. You also get to fight on top of a giant humanoid robot that’s tearing up the land.
So, I’ll be going over the graphics, music, difficulty, and enjoyment for this game. No time to talk now, so let’s go!

Graphics – Now, the graphics in this game is what made me love it in the beginning and this is also why I still love this one more than the other two in the series. In the movie like cutscenes, you get this glorious looking picture in which it looks as if you were playing this game on a PS3 (But you’re not! This game is only for PS2, Xbox Original and GameCube). You can see this opening cutscene here. Skip to 1:48. When you compare it to the graphics from Ty the Tasmanian Tiger 2 or 3’s cutscenes, you can see that they apparently slacked off for those games. But enough about those two mistakes, more about this masterpiece. Outside of the cutscenes, the actual levels are just as beautiful. Overall, I give the graphics a rating of 9.

Music – This game basically got a gigantic orchestra to help them make the music, and it worked out perfectly. In this game, you will notice that almost every piece of music either gets a perfect remix later on within the game, or each level gets their own completely original tune, and almost all of them do get original tunes. While at times the level may have more of a peaceful and energetic combo to the levels, others will have full out energetic tunes full of a more electric guitar sound and such in them. Each tune in each level fits it perfectly, whether it is a nice and slow level, or a fast, dramatic and climatic level. Overall, I give the music in this game a rating of 8.

Difficulty – Once you start off the game, you’ll notice that it’s fairly straight forward and not confusing at all. All you have to do is use your boomerangs, your teeth and your wits to get across the Australian terrain (Well, technically not Australian. You’re located over in the Tasmanian Island. However, as you proceed through the game, you’ll notice that things get a bit more complicated, as there are some complex challenges and searches. One of the main things you want to do is find all of the Thunder Eggs, which you have to do various different challenges for. One challenge is going and finding all the bilbies, which are all usually hidden in the most difficult places to locate. It’s also difficult locating all of the Opals, which you also have to get for the Thunder Eggs. Locating the Golden Cogs in the game isn’t as challenging as the Bilbies, Opals or Thunder Eggs, but it’s still a bit challenging. Sometimes, the challenge doesn’t consist of finding them, but instead, being able to get to them. After collecting a number of Golden Cogs, you’ll be able to get more Boomerangs within the game, while more specific ‘Rangs, such as FlamaRang, IceRang and ThundeRang, require getting a certain number of Thunder Eggs instead, and this is because these specific ‘Rangs help you get to areas where you get more levels to play. Overall, this game can be pretty challenging at times, yet it’s at the point where it’s still amazingly great and fun. I give the difficulty in this game a rating 10.

Enjoyment – This game was just a complete magnificent memory, and a perfect game overall. Every second of it was pure joy, to be honest. The music was absolutely perfect, the graphics and everything were amazing, and the game was set at a difficulty that was good enough for normal gamers to be perfectly fine with. I give the enjoyment in this game a rating of 10.

Now, to talk about how Krome Studios killed Ty with the sequels.

Ty the Tasmanian Tiger 2: Bush Rescue – Where do I start… Well, they take everything you loved about Ty the Tasmanian Tiger, and they rip it to shreds. First of all, in Ty 1, you rarely ever end up talking, and when you do, your voice actor had a super cool voice. Here, it sounds like some random Australian teen voiced him. No talent, nothing. Next, they completely wiped out the Thunder Eggs and Golden Cogs, replacing them with nothing, except for Opals. The more opals you get, the more Rangs you can buy. It takes no skill whatsoever to get everything you need to rule this game. Next, you don’t get actual zones, but instead, you get missions, in which you have to get to by having Shaza (The female protagonist) driving you there. It’s boring, long, and extremely exhausting waiting to get to the mission location. Remember how you were trying to preserve the land from Cass, and were against all these robots? Yeah, you ended up helping out the industrialization and using your OWN Robot for some missions in the game. And the graphics, including or mainly referring to the cutscenes here, are absolutely awful. It looks like they spent about 5 minutes tops on the whole design and everything there; and there’s no basic story to this game at all. Overall, this was just an absolutely horrible game to follow up with.

Ty the Tasmanian Tiger 3: Night of the Quinkan – So, this game was more or less of an improvement. To Ty the Tasmanian Tiger 2. The graphics are still bad, again looking like they didn’t put any effort into them at all, making you think they had the lowest budget ever in the gaming industry. Now, I’m gonna quit whining about the graphics and move onto something more important, which is the story (Even though people don’t give a S*** about the story of a game anymore). Now, some alternate dimension is being attacked by this race called the “Quinkans”, so you go and eradicate them from there. Once you succeed with that, surprise, you go back home, it’s been 6 months since you’ve left, and the whole place has gone down into ruins. Way to go, Sly (Ty’s brother). So, the reason why everything is destroyed is because the Quinkans had gone you YOUR world and messed everything up. Now you must exterminate the Quinkan threat from your world. While it’s a much better story than Bush Rescue’s (And this game has a better name than that too), it’s still a bit dull and whatnot. Moving on from that, with something I wasn’t too sure of my feelings on; you can customize your boomerangs in this game, as they’re now some dumb mechanical contraption or something. It really ruins your childhood when you see what they’ve done to the key things in the game. It’s kind of like making a game that removes Sonic’s speed, makes Shadow have doppelganger, adds a new hedgehog with a cliché story, and adding a scene that will attract all the furry fans. OH WAIT.
Anyways, they also make you use your boomerangs and some type of sword like thing against the Quinkan, and all the Frills are zombies. And instead of driving to your locations, you’re using your own Crabmorisble to travel to the locations (Crabmorsible. A mix of a car, a crab and a submarine, all mixed into one horrendous contraption). In all seriousness, I’d go and skip Ty 2, since that game contributes absolutely nothing to Ty 3.

Overall, Ty the Tasmanian Tiger 1 is an amazingly good game, and you should definitely try it out if you’re into platform games and whatnot.

So, thanks for reading my review, and hope you guys might decide to try this game out. It’s truly such a gem that is much unappreciated in the gaming community, which is quite a shame. Anyways, try checking out some of my other reviews if you liked this one. If you disliked this review, then check out my others in hopes that you like those ones. Either way, what I’m trying to say is, go and check out my reviews
Again, thanks for reading, and see ya, Nya~.

Wow that must of taken a bit of time to compile all of that together :p Nice review though you obviously put effort into it. I agree with you though in that its easy to be understated what with bigger franchises out there that boast similar concepts like the sonic games as you've said. I think music is a good little addition to any game though and the fact you said the game sounds like a mini orchestra just got my hooked from there aha I'll have to try this game out soon, and once again good review
