Dwarf Fortress is awesome. I haven't played it as much as I would have liked but it is such a well done old school game. I grew up playing a TON of Rogue and a few years ago I really got into roguelikes , I even started to program my own but that fell through.

I recommend ToME if you are into roguelikes. So many character builds you can do, some of them are damn near impossible! It also has some cool features like in game chat where you can link items to everyone else playing or ask for help. Or the ability to switch between graphical to ASCII mode, or the ability to make the screen 128x128 instead of like 32x32. Very well done game.

@bigNATE: It makes for great stories to share with your friends, but be prepared to sink a lot of time into it if you end up enjoying it. I can be planning to just spend a few hours putting some touches on my fort and all of a sudden it will be 3 am. So dangerous.... but worth it!
