Here's the article:
http://www.1up.com/features/dreamcast-20

They compare the similarities of the Sega Dreamcast with the Xbox 360.  Now I myself have noticed a lot of similarities between Dreamcast and Xbox and I've always thought of it as the Xbox taking over where the Dreamcast left off because the Xbox had a lot of exclusive Sega titles like Shenmue 2 and the Dreamcast had a microsoft windows processor.

Similarities between the Dreamcast and the Xbox systems worth pointing out:
-Revolutionized online gaming
-Windows OS
-Very similar controllers
-Very similar logos
-Xbox systems have a lot of sega exlusive titles including Shenmue 2, dreamcast collection and others

If I were to predict the future I could envision Sony fusing with Microsoft on a console and I could see Nintendo fusing with Apple on a console. Seriously they seem like good fits I think it would work out well for both of them. Out of the 3 current consoles, I think playstation is most likely to flop first. I remember GB vs GG and N64 vs PS1, I just don't think 3 console wars work out cause there is always 1 system that gets half as much attention then the others.

If we are going to label any 1 system as this generations dreamcast I would have to go with Nintendo Wii because its the outsider in my view. This also goes with Nintendo Gamecube. Gamecube to me was under the radar. There are XBOX 360 and PSX3 wars but I really don't see WII in the equation at all its just so different that is why I think Nintendo wins as the new dreamcast. In terms of failure, playstation wins as this generations dreamcast. In terms of some, not all, hardware, Xbox wins.

All current systems have traits of the dreamcast, unfortunately, none of them ARE the dreamcast but no doubt 1 of them will be cursed with Dreamcasts failure soon and I'm thinking its Playstation. It would probably be better for business if you had 2 consoles that had 2 completely different content then it is to had 3 different consoles and 2 of them very much alike. Wii is so different its like they are not even competing with the other two that is probably why they are so successful. Dreamcast was similar, only problem was it flopped like a fish in the process

I just came across another game that was suppose to be for the Dreamcast but was released on the Xbox (and only the xbox) instead due to the Dreamcast being cancelled.

I owned, and still do, a Dreamcast. It is sitting literally ten feet from me. I agree that is one of the best consoles ever made, and it is a real shame it died so quickly. Ironically, it was because Sega had failed so many times in the past that their success with Dreamcast was largely underappreciated. It is no surprise either that Microsoft XBOX has similarities to it. It is basically Microsoft's Dreamcast knock-off system after they and Sega decided not to work on the Dreamcast project together. I have heard it said XBOX was an improvement. I disbelieve this, largely because I ALSO own an XBOX. Guess which system gets more play? In fact, the only reason my XBOX gets play at all these days is because I modded it. Which, obviously, is not Microsoft's doing.

Lumian : Microsoft and Sega were originally to work on making the Dreamcast together?  I never knew that, that would explain why the Dreamcast has a windows operating system built in.

http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/1998/may98/segagmpr.mspx

...

An old, official, Microsoft press release about it. Microsoft had intended to collab with Sega but the two eventually parted ways. That's when Microsoft decided to take what they'd learned and enter the market themselves. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Lumian : That sounds a lot like the story of Sony helping Nintendo to make a system and than Sony eventually going on to make their own system instead.

That was a very good article to read, did you read it?  It sounds like Microsoft did in fact collab with Sega and help them make the Dreamcast because all the stuff mentioned in that article are things that actually did happen.  Example, Dreamcast did have a modem and Dreamcast did have Windows CE.  The Dreamcast was so much like a PC that it made modding it and creating homebrew for it so easy and that's why there's so much of that stuff out there on the internet.

I read part of it, enough to know it was good for showing you what I was talking about. I didn't read it all though because I have heard the story before. I also know a good bit of the details even if I heard about it years ago. As for them having infighting, I may accidentally be crossing up details between the Dreamcast story and the Sony/Nintendo one. If that's the case, I apologize. Its been years and the memory isn't what it used to be. I thought I remembered hearing though that Microsoft took issue with something and left the project. I'll see if I can dig up anything about that.

As for the 'so much like a PC that it made modding it and...' bit, yeah... funny enough XBOX eventually had the same problem. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

On that note:I modded MY XBOX not to play rip-off XBOX titles but to serve the same purpose for me Vizzed does now. I play classics on it.

Here we go: http://www.windowsitpro.com/article/news2/microsoft-sega-end-gaming-relationship

It was a mixture of things that ended their relationship. You can read about it here. Sounds like Microsoft had been plotting their own competing system the whole time though.

Lumian : Another good article, very informative.  To bad they didn't stick together, and it's to bad Sega didn't join up with Microsoft or something.  I've always been a fan of Sega and would have liked to see them stay in the hardware business, even if they were just teaming up.

This is the way I see it though:
Loyal fans of Nintendo / N64 went on to be fans of Gamecube and than fans of the Wii
Loyal fans of Sony / Playstation went on to be fans of Playstation 2 and than fans of Playstation 3
Loyal fans of Sega / Dreamcast had no where to go so I think a majority went on to be fans of Xbox and than Xbox 360

I, too, wish Microsoft had have stayed on with Sega. They would have made an interesting team and certainly might've done even better against Sony than Microsoft does now. As for Sega fans, generally I think you're right. Though, I have also seen Sega fans picking up Nintendo systems simply because a lot of Sega titles now appear on it. Especially Sonic.
