Think of the best vacation you have EVER been on! Now think of what made it the best vacation. Chances are it was the beauty of the location that made it great. But now think if you could never go to that place again! Thats how I feel when I find out one of the places I visited is polluted and I can't go back there!
What will it take for people to realize we have an enviromental problem? My real question is what natural location would you do anything to protect? and what would you do to protect it?

Please keep it appropriate for what you'd do to protect the location.

For me it would be the Appalachian Mountains. I always camp there. Theres nothing like sitting on a ridge watching the sunrise on an autumn morning.

lol, I would probably protect Mt. Fuji in Japan.

Anyone ever trekked up the mountainside on foot and viewed all the way shrines and religious symbols scattered throughout? It's pretty nice, and the clear mountain air does wonders for your health. Also, do a google image search of Mount Fuji, and you'll see some pretty awesome smoke formations.

I would also like to protect them all. We are losing so much each year, and it is sad. It is possible to rehabilitate some places though... for example, back in the 1970s Niagara Falls was so polluted that no one wanted to go there, and gods help you if you went into that river. Now, it is cleaned up and a beautiful sight once again.

Baconator : Your home is not a natural location. Unless you live in a cave or something, which would be neat, but unlikely.

Well... As long as the Earth counts as a natural location (which I'm sure it does ), I wanna protect the whole thing! There is s much beauty here, and so many things here worth protecting, so I would give my life to know the Earth will continue to live on and become more beautiful than it is now, without war, and pollution, and all that grossness that Humans have contaminated it with.

Best Keep your concience as clean as you can, or charma will come with a blade in it's hand. It will strike all those who seek to gain without giving, and spare all of those who are weak and forgiving.

SilverMaestro : Wow are you a super hero? Protecting the Earth? lol Jk but Seriously thats a big goal I meant a natural location on Earth that has meaning to you. I went to Alaska and loved it but I saw it was winter and the gaciers where gone almost. So I would give $10 a day like those charity things do just to protect it. Ya know? I'm looking for realistic goals kind of.

If I have to choose a specific location, then I suppose that I would have to go with the Amazon rainforest. If we lose it, we are screwed, because that is where a large portion of our oxygen comes from (another huge portion comes from the Pacific Ocean, just a random factoid). Seriously though there are so many places and creatures that need protection.

Like, for example, did you know that they attached a rider to the new budget that will remove the grey wolves from the endangered species list... because they don't want to pay to protect them anymore? Apparently it is limited to the packs in the Rocky Mountains, because claims that farmers in Montana are complaining that they are becoming a problem... so rather than just improve fences they want to cull the population and take them back to the brink of extinction. The bigger reason though... rich hunters don't like competing with wolves for elk and other game. For the record, these are the wolves released back into Yellowstone National Park, there are less than 2,000 of them. They are still safe within Wyoming's borders, but when have you known a wild species to obey invisible lines created by humans?

My backyard.

Nature is all fun and good, but home takes priority over all of them. What's the point of saving Yellowstone if my own backyard is destroyed instead?

Yes, they are important to the American people, but family comes first, and our family would probably prefer having a backyard.

Probably the Amazon forest. It's such a beautiful place with tons of creatures and flowers and such, I want it to last as long as possible.

Although I have never been there, I would choose to protect the Amazon rain forest. It is important to protect it for ecological reasons and not just because it is a beautiful sight. The Amazon houses more species than any other area on Earth, and it plays an important role of putting oxygen into the atmosphere. Every year more and more deforestation occurs in the Amazon, resulting in many species becoming extinct or endangered, not to mention it displaces natives who live there.

Even though most companies that partake in the deforestation also create plantations to 'replace' what they took, they tend to lack the quality of the pre-existing forest. Most of these plantations are structured and designed to be the most beneficial for the company. What I mean is they are evenly spaced rows of a single type of tree, designed to allow them to grow faster so they can be cut down faster as well the rows are bare of any other type of plant life. This fails to mimic natural forests and results in almost no species  relocating to the plantation compared to how many lived in the forest before it was cut.  Again, the companies just do it for their own monetary gain and to make activists happy. This isn't exclusive to the Amazon, but I just view the Amazon as the most important forest in the world.

Currently, the Brazilian government is contemplating the allowance of genetically modified trees to be used commercially. Which would mean the plantations wouldn't even have natural trees planted. http://climate-connections.org/2011/07/07/comprehensive-report-back-from-gmo-tree-industry-conference-in-brazil/

Here is a picture of a Pine plantation in the U.S. sorry I couldn't find a decent picture from the Amazon  after 20 minutes of searching , so I decided to use this one as it is the same technique . http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/63/Pinus_taeda_plantation.jpg

To be honest, I don't have ONE specific location I would want to protect. Why should only ONE area be considered more precious to save than another. I think the ENTIRE Earth should be protected. Unfortunately I am only one person and I don't have the power to protect the entire Earth. Unless every single person on Earth decides to protect the Earth together, I don't think it will happen. Mankind can't protect the Earth because we are not powerful enough to do so. Only one person can do that, and that is Earth's creator God.
