I find the books better, for the sole reason that a lot of things are cut in the movie versions. Rowlings' story is so intricately detailed, many things make less sense/have to be changed a good deal to fit in the movies.

bigNATE : Good point. Although, nobody wants another sleeper movie that lasts forever like Waterworld, right?

But yeah, the books are better. J.K Rowling is an excellent author, and the movies never really captures her magic. I'm not saying I like Harry Potter; I'm just saying that the books (from what I've read) are better.

the_casualty : I agree completely. There's such a balance with these kinds of things, especially when the books get as long as the last four in the series.

The books, hands down! Every time I watch a movie I walk out feeling so pissed and disappointed... especially after Half Blood Prince, oh my god I wanted to kill someone!

Books, enough said. Na, just kidding, there's more to be said. The books give more detail, that's why I prefer them over the books. But the films can show the fight sences better. The films do have things cut in them, which is a shame, he death day party would ahve been quiet nice (Harry potter Chamber of Secrets). Although Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 was supprising accurate to the book.
The films are nice when you read the book. It can be a little weird seeing what you imagined on the big screen.

The Books go into more detail and the films leave a lot of things out that you read in the book but prefer some movies to the books, Order of the Phoenix and the Goblet of fire were great movies and even the chamber of secrets when compared with the book, however the later books are a lot better then the movies, i can't see the last part of deathly Hallows being anywhere near as epic as the book makes it

I like the books way better, because there is a lot more detail in them, and the movies change too much of the books and that makes it less good by changing what J.K Rowling actually wrote.

The books are obviously going to have more detail, and the movie will have better visuals (depending on your imagination)..my opinion though, i would defiantly have to go with the books, as they of course last a few hours/days while the movies last a mere few hours.

The books are much better than the movies. I guess I'm one of those people who want the movie to be exactly like the book; especially something I treasured so dearly in my childhood. I don't think the Harry Potter books can make a good movie; there are too many details that need to be in it, but they can't put in because it would be too long. What I think they should do is turn it into a tv show and each season could be one entire book or close to it anyway. That way they can cover more of the book and add all the twists and turns that make Harry Potter such an amazing read.

The books, definitely. I like the movies, I do, but the books have so much more detail. And the movies tend to leave me a little disappointed. =/ Especially Goblet of Fire, Order of the Phoenix and Half Blood Prince. As movies, they're pretty good, but as adaptations, they're lacking. =/ Half Blood Prince felt more like a romantic comedy to me, and they cut out the battle scene, which I was looking forward to. ]= I really liked the Deathly Hallows part 1 and 2, though. They were pretty good.

I'll go with books. I read the books first after all =P

The books are a lot of fun, and really got me interested in the movies. The movies weren't the best, but they were ok.

the books, no question.  The movies started well with the philosophers stone (although i wasnt happy they changed it) but it got gradually worse, i cant believe how lousy part 1 of the finale was, the book was so good...
the true magic is only found in the books, the films fail to capture that because greedy producers have had there way with the script.
