I played the original game last week visiting a friend. I'd forgot how completely this series revolutionised the genre. I mean, I enjoyed Resident Evil immensely but it didn't take long for shambling groaning zombies and piss poor voice acting to become a cliche. Even though the presentation is dodgy by todays standards the fright value has lost none of its potency. Yesterday I was walking home in the misty English weather and it made me think how great these games are at giving you the willies.

not that i've played silent hill or resident evil yet, silent hill looks so awsome, with its storie line being so twisted and its good looking character building, it would prove to be a scary one.

you guys should try theif shadow killer one of the levels is rather freaky, being in a huntered mental and kids hopsital in the pitch black and only a window a hundred metres infront of you, then all of a suden a scream and a head floats past the window, made me jump everytime

Well, I only ever played Silent Hill 2 so I'm sort of partial to Resident Evil, I started to get tired of Resident Evil after Nemesis but then RE4 came out, and it just blows any other game from that genre out of the water. I've played it through about 7-8 times and still jump from time to time.

I *like* the Resident Evil series (I thought Code Veronica was awesome) but lost track with the outbreak games which I was told were nothing special.
Silent Hill has a far more complicated and surreal plot. You have to work for it to piece it together (like a David Lynch film) while Resident Evil just hands it to you on a plate

Yes, the puzzles in Silent Hill are more complex and mind-bending, while the "puzzles" in Resident Evil are rather lame and Resident Evil 4 is no exeception they are still pretty lame, but they're enjoyable.

Yeah, perhaps developers should also realise that if you've been gored by a zombie or mauled by a mutant dog, it takes more than a health drink, some antiseptic spray or a clump of herbs to make you better

True, but I think one of the main points of video games is to escape reality, what they should do is to make healing items very scarce and not to put them in every single box you find around the level. I thought what Metal Gear Solid 3 did was awesome, in implementing a healing system where you find antiseptic, splints and other such things for healing.

I agree. (Not heard about the healing system on MGS 3, will have to check that out or wait for a "substance" version).
However, I can see the challenge, especially with survival horror titles to have enough ammo and health to make the game completeable but without holding the player's hand and managing to create an atmosphere of risk and danger.
I think SH does this particularly well as ammo is scarce making you more likely to run from the monsters than stand and fight (makes you more afraid of them)

I just played through SH2 for the first time, and I think it was awesome. The whole atmosphere...

I'm definitely going for all the endings!

Funny you should say that I've just started playing the original. You'd think it would look dated by now and to be fair it does in some respects but the atmosphere is all still there.

Re SH2 multiple endings. I seem to remember them being much harder to get than in the 1st one.

Yeah, they are, but I've heard that they're worth it.

About SH1, even though the graphics aren't the best around, I think it's a great game. Especially the atmosphere, like you said. I tried playing it at midnight once, with all lights off. A great experience, a must! The "other dimensions" in SH1 are simply horrifying...

I also like how you have to play it through a few times to appreciate how clever the story is and how interesting the characters are. I bought the whole set from amazon and I'm going to play them all through in order. Will take ages as I have little free time but it'll be worth it!

Silent hill is the best I think. Although, that could be because I never really got into Resident Evil all the much. I personally think the first Silent Hill was the best. I havent' really played the 4th, I've seen people play, but never played myself...I think that'll go on my wishlist, lol

I think all the games have aged incredibly well. Particularly SH2 which came out in the early days of the PS2. the game still looks and plays superb.

I love resident evil games, but the first silent hill is good to but I got stuck at a part and it was difficult to go on in the game, but I haven't really play all of the silent hill games. I have played the first one, but haven't beaten it and the others I haven't played.
