That's about what happened when mine died, too. Try to pick up a used PS2 - the prices are down, and they'll play the old PS1 games (unlike the PS3, which doesn't have that feature).

if you need to fix youre PS1 try opening it up and seeing if anything is lose if so, find where from CAREFULLY!!! look for scratches on the game or eye of the counsel it will tick and not read the disk. if so to clean the eye, take a simple Q tip and wipe it gently and the area around it if it the disk it needsscratch remover and cleaner clean first and apply scratch remover found at just about anywhere

Clean off the disk reader. This usually helps a lot. I had this same problem with the old purple lunch box, Game Cube. Then it worked fine after that.

scootheman : I occasionally ran into this problem when I had my PS1 console hooked up, even had it when I had my PS2 was hooked up. It sounds like either the laser may be off line or the more likely scenario is that you may have a disc that needs either to be cleaned or replaced.

I use to clean the disc first before making any decisions on whether or not to replace the disc and in my case 9/10 times the disc just needed a good cleaning and once cleaned the disc ran flawlessly. I still have my original consoles with the exception of my original PS3 so up until recently I have never had to replace a bad console. The PS3 slim plays old PS1 games by the way, the only problem is it doesn’t play PS2 wishes they would put it back in, when they do a system update.

Make sure your disk is clean, and also check the inside of the PSone. There might be something broken or loose in the system. Also, what is the game you're trying to play? Some games on PSone glitch a lot.
