I know that some of you are probably thinking "Wow, this guy doesn't know how to do this type of training? Loser." But I really need some help. I don't know what it is, what they stand for, and how to do this type of training. Some people say it is a really good way of training your Pokemon, but no one will tell me how to do this. Please help!

If I were you, I'd just play the game normally and casually, like it was meant to be played.

In all honesty, I don't think I really know exactly how to, nor do I want to.

If I let you down because you really wanted an actual answer, you can look it up or wait for someone more dependable...

Okay ill break this down simple cause i also know it can get confusing.

IV's are predetermined. THey are set when you catch the Pokemon. There is no way to officially change them. Also, Shiny pokemon, while much cooler looking, have lower IVs then a normal pokemon.

EV's however, CAN be trained. Every pokemon gives a certain amount of EV points to a specific stat. For example, Gengar's give you 2 EV's in Sp. Atk

To EV train effectively, you need to choose the stats you want to train, and find the Pokemon who best gives those Stats per battle. So if you were training a Sp.Atker than Gengar would be a good choice. However, you need to pay attention. Each Stat can have a max of 252 EV's. Once it hits that limit you wont gain any benefit from it. So keep track of how many you gain. Also, only 2 Stats can reach the max of 252.

A little tip is that breeding pokemon gives you a better chance at EV training. Whether you realize it or not throughout your whole game you are battling POkemon, therefore gaining EVs. THat means you cant efffectively EV train the Pokemon you used for the main game storyline. Breeding allows you to start from scratch. And allows you to sometimes pass on good moves. Happy EV Training!!

I explained it simple enough right? Don't worry it confuses alot of people. What alot of people dont know is that IVs were created in the Gold/Silver/Crystal era. At the time they were called DVs and not too many people knew of them. EVs were also created then. They were more popular in the Hoenn games, mainly seen in the fact that a woman in Slateport would tell you if your Pokemon had maxed their EV stats. If so she would present them with the Effort Ribbon. This is cause EV stands for Effort Value. And its no problem if you have any more questions just ask either in thread or PM

A lot of people don't know so don't feel stupid. Mostly competitive gamers know it since doing Proper EV training can give you a much needed boost in stats. And still, thats what a forum is for right? Posting answers to questions

ignavusd : That's usually what forums are for, yes. I am so glad you told me this, because now I am going to raise a new "Ultimate Team" so to speak. Same Pokemon in it, just with better stats

Remember what i told you. Shiny's have lower IV/DV stats. And youll want to try and breed for all of them so you start from scratch. Also, i doubt i need to say this but lookup which pokemon gives the highest EV for that stat. Like i know Mewtwo's give 3 EVs in Sp ATk but there arent many of those are there? Lmao

There are ways to start from scratch without breeding! There are berries that you can get that lower your EVs in one stat to zero and they also raise happyness

Pomeg berry - HP

Kelpsy berry - attack

Qualot berry - defence

Hondew berry - special attack

Grepa berry - special defence

Tamato berry - speed

Also there are items to help EV training availible in the fourth generation. These are known as the Power Items, but I can't remember which one is which, but I do know that every time you gain EVs you'll gain four extra ones in a given stat.

There is an Item from the third generation onward that doubles the EV intake kniwn as the Macho Brace. With the same effects as the Macho Brace is a status called PokeRus the effects are permanent and infectious to your party but only for a short time so keep a pokemon stored in you PC with PokeRus if you get it because PokeRus is EXTREMLEY rare.

Like ignavused said there is a limit to EVs in each stat but is actually 255 but competitive battlers only use 252 because each 4 EVs equals +1 in the stat it is in. In totral a Pokemon can spend 510 EVs so for maximum benifit when EV training but 252 in two diffrent stats then put 4 into something you don't need as much as what has 252 EVs shuch as HP

The items you are referring to are things like the Power Anklet and stuff. While the berries do that it also can really get confusing keeping track. The easiest way is to start from scratch so you can keep a good count. There is also the Proteins, Calciums, Irons, things like those. They give 10 EVs to a stat, but once that stat has 100 EVs it wont accept anymore of those. So basically it's an expensive way of boosting from 0 to 100 EVs. I still recommend the training since you also get EXP.
