After watching Star Trek's "A measure of a man" again, I decided to make a thread with this type of controversy...

I think it only takes someone or something to respond to their environment and its changes to be alive.

But, In the biological sense of the word, something is "alive" if it meets the following criteria:

1. reproduction
2. growth and/or differentiation through metabolism (which usually implies some form of respiration)
3. adaptation to the environment
4. the ability to distort entropy--that is, to increase or maintain the organization of the living system at the expense of the environment.

A living thing has/requires all three of the following :

1. Able to do reproduction.
2. Requires energy.
3. Has feelings (Even Cells has them, what I kind of meant is they react to things).

I'd probably say the able to reproduce.

Didowe : Requiring energy? Every machine in the world requires energy so I wouldn't put that there.

Actually hybrids of different animals often can't reproduce...

So are you saying that they are somehow not alive?

Nor can an infant, an infertile woman, a really old person, a neutered/spayed/castrated animal, etc... none can reproduce. But generally speaking, your 3-rule definition works.
