Made a thread for people to ask me about college. Whether your thinking about pursuing college, your in college, or want to return. I will answer and help with anything college-related. I figured this might also be an outlet for people maybe struggling with it or somethings that fall into tis subject. Any questions revolving around this, ask, and I will answer....

I'm already done college so I don't really have any questions about college for me.... but I'll ask you something anyway.

Where are you going to college? (I'm pretty sure you are going)


As for the ask anything aspect.... me and JusTReaL talked about this and I liked the idea of having people ask about college. I think it's a good opportunity for discussion for a lot of the members of the board. Most members are middle or high school students and could use advice on stuff like this.

Well I am currently enrolled in Lehigh Carbon Community College for my associates degree for Computer-Generated Interactive Design. Basically in more laimen terms, Video Game Design, Flash Design, etc. I plan on going for my bachelors just not entirely sure yet.

1: Do you plan on making your own game at the College and then sharing it here?

2: Are the other classmates their nice?

3: How are the teachers or professors?

1. Eventually I will have to make an Interactive project and would share it on here when the time comes to do so, and David allows it of course.

2. Students and the student life is great. It's alot different from grammar school and high school. People are easier to get along with and talk to, mainly because people are more mature.

3. The professors I've dealt with are pretty laid back, easy to get along with, and are there to help whenever. They seem to be more in touch with the students and enjoy it more then High School teachers. It just seems like they know you paid for school and want to be there so they're, there for you. You get what I'm saying. Your basically a customer so they're trying to satisfy your needs.

I would like to go to Vanderbilt, to study biology and medicine. In your opinion, what kind of grades will I need to achieve this?

Well your first step is probably taking your SAT's, so you might want to look at what the minimum grade limit is for Vanderbilt. You might also wanna see about taking some of your first courses at a community college because there's no point in taking the minor classes for more money there, when you can just get the same courses at a community college. Your going to get the same amount of credits for these courses and learn the same material. These classes are usually math, english, etc. the basic classes. I'd also say, get the best grades you can get, deans list is a plus. A's and B's are what you want mainly, anything below that is basically below average in college.

Taking community college courses before transferring over to a university is a good idea to save money in most cases, but not always.

For example, I am a third-year civil engineering major at a university in California. It would be next to impossible to graduate with this major if I wasn't here for the four years of undergraduate studies. I guess what I'm trying to get at is that it kind of depends on the major and the college's/university's curriculum and requirements for graduation whether or not someone should start off at a community college or begin straight away at a university.

Eliminator, also be aware that biology and medicine (*especially* medicine, or pre-med) are extremely competitive fields, so do your best to impress Vanderbilt! They will choose the best candidates to attend their school. Good luck!! =]

I have a question. Not for me, but for some of the people thinking about school.

Would you recommend living on campus in the dorms provided or trying to find a place off campus to live??? Have you experienced both of these circumstances or have you just done 1 or the other?

Me personally I live with my Dad. But I would say that living at a place you are comfortable with is most important whether it's on campus, in a dorm, or off-campus. The things you need to put in perspective are if your going to be able to study and focus on school without any distractions. There is no right answer with this and there is no wrong answer. It all lies with what your planning on doing in school, how determined you are, where your going to live at(not necessarily on-campus or off just the general area), and so much more. Theres too much to consider but your best bet in my mind is off-campus just because you will not have a lot of distraction and you will have the comfortability of not being on campus ALL THE TIME...

What is your favorite thing of all?

The best thing in my mind is the whole college scene is working for you because you are a paying customer. It's not like high school but similiar in ways. I also like having some of my course content done online, it helps a bunch and makes it easy to do alot of homework and tests. The professors are really nice, the faculty in general is nice, and everyone seems eager to help. There is alot of resources within the college scene so take advantage of all they have to offer you.

Oh my god! I realize now that, that is the same college I will go to, to study biology and medicine for becoming a doctor! What a coincidence!

My questions:

1. How much sleep do you generally get per night?

2. How long does it generally take to do your homework?

3. When do your classes start?

What subjects do they teach in your year level in america? (Per term, or the main subjects, with choice ones)

Colleges in America don't really have a set curriculum per grade level. It's more of a "I have time to take this class at this time" sort of thing. At least it has been at the colleges I've been to.

So I actually have a question... I'm planning on doing my grad school work and getting my teaching credential at Slippery Rock University or University of Pittsburgh. Can you give me any insight on which of the two would be better or what to expect?

Sept-

1. Sleep is determined by you pretty much. Going to college shouldn't change you sleeping arrangements unless you have bad ones, just get to bed a decent hour so you get up not feeling like BLAH!

2. I do some of my homework everyday. Usually with my classes I have one day a week for all of them that my homework is due by. I do alot of my computer on the net then turn it in over the net too.(Homework will also be determined by your school of choices curriculum)

3. Mine starts at the end of august for the first semester then ends in may for my second semester of the school year. Every school is going to be slightly different and they also offer summer classes. You can go during the day or night as long as they have a class not filled up at that time

Geldra- They teach a very wide range of classes, pretty much anything you can think of, there is a school that teachs it.

Elara- I know that Slippery Rock is a nice school, I heard alot of good things about it but Pitt, I haven't heard much about. Pitt seem to be more popular with name and everything. If I were you I would try to visit both schools then compare and contrast. I live on the East Coast of PA and only been out to Pittsburgh once for a Steelers game so I can't give you solid evidence to which one is better in my opinion.

I have a question when I watch a movie that have to to do someing about college they have these people who call the self the Gamas, the Ogmegas, the Ultras stuff like that. And my question is do they realy have those a collage?

Yes they do, they can be either fraternities(males) or sororities(females). They are usually greek terms for letters and such that the names come from such as alpha beta zeta, etc. What they are is like a dorm or so that form together to create these frats and such. You would first start off as a pledge then make your way up the senority list as time progresses. Most of these are theme-based and such so you would want to make your choice as to what kinda crowd you fit in with the most.

How's the food over there?

I've always had a desire to go to film school and become some sort of director or screenwriter.

The Fraternaties or Sororities are not necessarily dorm groupings. A lot of them are just social organizations or honor societies. For example, I am a member of Phi Alpha Theta, which is the nationwide historical honors society. I've also been invited to join Phi Kappa Phi, which is a non-major specific honors society. These Greek groups do not require you to pledge (which is nice) but you do have to pay a one time membership fee and you have to meet GPA requirements to join. Personally,I like them way more than the other type of Greek groups.
