People can make whatever jokes about the show's at times cringe humor they want, but Rick and Morty had a good premise and some truly hilarious episodes. However, I find it's been worn down over time by co-creator Justin Roiland, who voices both Rick and Morty, whose comedic styling has extended into several different TV shows and through his video game development company Squanch Games, has become a kind of one trick pony. Awkward delivery, squeaky voices saying "oh jeez" and often intentionally bad writing for the purpose of meta humor. His newest video game, High On Life, has been derided for being like one really long, bad episode of Rick and Morty when it comes to the game's writing.

Well, today, Justin Roiland has gotten into some legal trouble, having been formally criminally charged with one felony count of domestic battery with corporal injury and one felony count of false imprisonment by menace, violence, fraud and/or deceit against a woman he was dating in 2020. Having plead not guilty at the time of the filing shortly after, details of the case, including police body camera footage and the affidavit in support of his arrest, remain sealed under a protective order.

This is shocking news to me as somebody that, while never a massive fan, definitely enjoyed his comedy at times. I am hoping the public receives clearer answers, but the fact that he was formally charged two years after posting bond doesn't spell good news for the animator and comedian.

If he faces anything significant or is forced to step down, it would ruin Rick and Morty considering they have many seasons left that have already been confirmed. Just recasting him as both Rick and Morty would be a big blow for the show but then considering that he does so much more than just the voices would mean that the show would be in a huge hole that they'd have to dig themselves out of. Solar Opposites would be significantly hurt as well and it wouldn't be the projects themselves but the hundreds of people that work on them as well.
