Hi everyone this is a topic that has been on my mind for quite some time so I figured I would share my thoughts on it.
I have a list of games that I feel should get more notice and why. Powerstone: the gameplay is unique and has aged wonderfully it could make for a good competitive scene if people were interested. Megaman zero: This subseries of megaman gets overlooked by just about all of its brothers when I feel thaat all 4 of the games in it have a sense of consistency betwwen them. Sine mora: a game that got me into more sidescrolling 2d shooters and made me change my mind on them as a whole. Risk of rain: The first one is getting pushed under the rug by ror 2 which is a shame considering how good of a game it is(releasing on multiple platforms). Wario land: thanks to a replier for pointing this one out to me I agree it is really good. Darkstalkers: this is a series while some people may have heard of it not many have picked it up or maybe as not as many as I think(this one might change) that is my list for now more will be added later if i think of them. thanks. I suggest checking out the Wario Land series. This is a very underrated trilogy. Wario Land 4 had to be my favorite. The second one was also very good. These games were all about collecting coins/treasures and getting rich! I suggest checking out the Wario Land series. This is a very underrated trilogy. Wario Land 4 had to be my favorite. Ooooh Boy!
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: These games is criminally underrated, especially by review sites not giving it a fair shot by any means if you actually look at the reviews *cough* IGN *cough*. They story in most of them is God Tier, which is saying something considering it's a Pokemon game, which have a history of having rather lackluster stories most of the time. The only real problem I see with people getting into it is the Dungeon Crawler gameplay that for some might be repetitive, but the story and characters more than make up for it. Earth Defense Force.
You and your friends can play together as different classes in an open city where almost everything is destructible with giant monsters and space ships everywhere for you to kill. If you can't find any thrill in taking down a giant spider with a tank mounted rail gun or blowing up a giant mech with 20 pounds of C4 then wipe yourself off because you are dead. Underrated games...
Buddy, pal, amigo, compa, brother in arms, honored guest, pal, buddy. May I take a moment of your time to tell you about our lord and savior Dra- Sigma Star was the first OFFICIAL video game I ever played. Finding Nemo on the Gameboy Advance doesn't count. It introduced me to the space shooter genre. In this game you are Jon Conner, space marine. A race of aliens attacked Earth many years ago, nearly ending civilization until the space police kicked in and booted them out. They came back though, and after you lead a squad to eliminate one of their motherships you meet with the commander and choose to accept an ultimate mission. You are promptly drugged and ejected into space, where the aliens indoctrinate you as one of their own. It becomes clearly aware that the mission was becoming a double agent. They attach a symbiote over your body to make you stronger and look generally badass, and the alien also communicates with automated biological ships in space. Basically you have two halves to the game, the rudimentary troop segments where you control whatshisface on foot and traverse planets and collect tools and weapons for your ships, and as a form of random encounter, one of the ships in orbit may warp you inside to manually pilot it away from threats. The ships themselves come in different forms and have their own primary weapons, but you also get to create your own custom secondary set to use with any ship out of weapon mods you collect. Also the game developed into like a dating sim at some point, like you see a hot alien chick in the midst of changing into her crab suit and 6 year old me didn't even register what was happening. I went from Jimmy Neutron vacuuming twonkies... to this. Like renting a Cadillac V-16 that happens to be Megatron. There was also a period where I played Rain World, then discovered Hollow Knight, and then played Flinthook. I would have made some kind of connection but I was lazy. :Boured Hey, speaking of games being shafted by reviewers, you know how lazy websites like metacritic and IGN have to pay some random intern to play the new Call of Duty, and then they're like "everyone is complaining about our reliance on triple A titles, try this random thing I found on Steam" and they play an indie game for exactly one hour and base their experience on that before going back to Destiny 2? Enter Rain World. Rain World isn't the dark souls of platformers featuring alien wildlife, it's a sophisticated ecology simulation where you play as the intelligent secondary consumer and must defend yourself from greater predators, find the necessary resources to survive, and adapt to the unknown environment, all while managing the cycle of heavy rain that forces everything into rest until the weather clears and the floods die down. Each biome imposes new challenges to overcome, as you test new tools at your disposal, try and get along with the neighboring wildlife, and submit yourself to trial and error. Death is just part of the solution in this game, and while the air of random occurrence can deter some players, it does get much easier as you master the controls and learn from your mistakes, to the point where you can plan ahead and set yourself up for safety many cycles in a row. Like I said, the environment is constantly adjusting around you, whether you involve yourself or not. Carnivores and herbivores alike will search for their next meals, herds of tribes will move from place to place, and the giant apex predators forged from Ryleh will roam about the map, searching for their next victims. You learn when something new has made residence nearby that you either must avoid or make use of, and how to exploit the different behavior patterns of animals and psychotic terrorist plants. Also that when in doubt, the scavengers can eat s*** and die. Buddy, pal, amigo, compa, brother in arms, honored guest, pal, buddy. Offhand the most underrated game I know of would be Brigandine, a turn-based strategy/RPG for the Playstation.
It has a lot of strategic depth to it, giving you a relative handful of generals who can command monsters in battle, and a bunch of monsters with different costs and abilities to choose from. I really hasn't seen anything quite like it, and it's an intriguing game. Probably most people will go with the high cost dragons or gryphons that fly but do good damage against ground targets, but even the zombie - an extremely weak unit that relies almost exclusively on the bonus experience for winning a battle early on - can evolve into a powerful vampire if you give it the chance. Throw in the vastly different armies, including generals, starting troops and troop availability as well as simply different locations on the map, and you have a game that won't feel like the same old thing for at least a few playthroughs. Evident by my icon, I think Kendo Rage for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System is an underrated (or more-so obscure) game that I think should get more notice, if anything, so that the main character Josephine Tsurugino can get more recognition and fanart.
As for the game itself, it's pretty basic platformer stuff, albeit a bit tougher than even Super Castlevania 4, but I think its presentation is above-average. One game that I think is super underrated is Yonder: The Cloud Catcher Chronicles. I think people look over it because there's no battling whatsoever and pretty much no conflict at all so that turns people away from the game. But it's still an amazing game, especially because of the art style and sound editing. I really think more people should play it just for the charm alone. |
