X-Men Vs. Street Fighter (Euro 961004) Reviews

Overall 9.4    Graphics 9    Sound 9    Addictive 8    Story 8    Depth 8    Difficulty 7

The beginning of the Vs. Series   becerra95
This really was a game I didn’t play until 2019. I thought about skipping it but since I’ve unintentionally started a series of reviews of this franchise I might as well continue the trend. This game is set after Street Fighter Alpha 2, and it’s a first of such.
This game officially started the franchise with the wildest crossover anyone has seen yet in a fighting game. This is one where both properties merge to fight one another or with another. This is X-men vs Street Fighter for arcade, played on MAME.
Story : 8
Mutants and Street Fighter characters have been kidnapped and disappearing from around the world. Some assumed that it was the work of Magneto, mutant that is a master of magnetism, while other believed it was M. Bison, leader of Shadoloo. With this X-men and Street Fighter teamed up with one another to find the reasoning of the recent disappearances. Even though they’re working on the same goal, cracks and issues are present in the teams and fights break out. Would they be able to solve the mystery or dispense all their energy among each other?
With this the story is more interesting than in previous titles. The presence of street fighter and x-men in the same game though, people probably got their minds blown back in the days.
Story is an 8 out of 10. The story is pretty good and how it brought both franchises together is a gift form the heavens.
Graphics : 9
The graphics of the game is beautiful. Street Fighter hold their Alpha 2 models (reason why I had to do a review of Alpha 2 first before playing this to keep the franchise in order), respectively. The X-men characters hood all their resemblance to their respective cartoon. Even though they both have a different design (X-men more cartoon while Street Fighter has a more anime feel to it) they both blend well during gameplay.
The attract mode is very good. “The Wildest Crossover” they stated and it’s not wrong. Little bit of flash when Ryu shakes Cyclops hands but not much to be concerned. The demos demonstrate what the game has to offer and it’s pretty wild to see some moves and specials (more on later)
The stages are really good. The background usually have beautiful scenery or people around to watch the fight or cower in fear as you duke out to the opponent. Few stages are also dynamic, changing as the fight goes along whether an explosion, falling down a hole or ascending up on a platform, it gives the player to experience a lively atmosphere and it’s a welcome upgrade to the visuals and experience (X-men children of the atom and Marvel Super Heroes done similar in their games).
The animation, oh Jesus. It’s one of the best when it came out for the franchise. No choppy frame rate, game is consistent, moves and attacks have some weight to it. When selecting you have an option for normal speed or turbo, either or it’s a fast paced game.
Every character has a special move and to make sure that Street Fighter Characters match the graphics department with the moves, they exaggerate their attacks. Hadokens are large, beams (sonic kick, psycho crusher, etc) are flashy and everything just seems more action packed and larger than Alpha 2. They keep their shadow when executing their super moves (first appeared in Alpha 1 and Alpha 2).
The same with the x-men, moves are a bit more over exaggerated with Optic blasts and typhoons. With their super moves they don’t have a shadow but when defeating an enemy they have a flashy background with “X”, similar to Children of the Atom. Honestly… It will catch the player’s eyes.
Overall I’ll give it a nice 9 out of 10. The graphic are clean, animation is superb. The attacks are way too exaggerated but in a good way. Little bit of too much flash at times if sensitive to light.
Sound : 9
The quality of the sound is amazing. The themes from most characters originate from their respective games (X-men from Children of the Atom and Street Fighter from Alpha 2). Some have been remixed too and it’s not bad at all.
The intro you have a nice energetic rock music playing with the announcer screaming “X-men vs Street Fighter” when it shows the title logo.
Voices don’t differentiate from earlier releases with most characters retaining the original audio from their previous games.
Overall the sound is a 9.5 out of 10. Great quality overall, Sabretooth sounds a bit muffled but that’s the only issue I can find
Difficulty : 7
The game isn’t difficult. Little bit of pressure and AI always blocking on later stages but it’s not that bad. I would say that some issues might stem to the inputs of some moves as they have specific inputs (360 rotation of stick, charging moves) and specials also have some variation of difficulty.
I would say one issue of difficulty, is Ryu and Cyclops when they’re together on later stages. They’re hard to beat and always block and counter everything that it’s annoying. The final boss is also a bit difficult but manageable.
It’s a 7 out of 10. Not too difficult but some cheap shots.
Addictive : 8
The game is pretty fun to play. Hyper active moves, a roster that is easily recognizable and popular back in the day. Gameplay so fast and the satisfaction of beating the game is heart pounding. The vs aspect is where they get the money. Playing against friends or other people to see who’s the best will grant hours of play if that invested.
It’s an 8 out of 10. Vs is the main grab but single player does help you learn about moves and enjoy the arcade experience.
Depth : 8
The game has a bit to offer. 17 characters are present in the game. No secret or unlockable characters but there is one hidden.
For the Street Fighter side, making their first appearance in the marvel series is Ryu, Ken, Chun Li, M. Bison, Dhalsim, Zangief, Cammy and Charlie. Akuma is also present as a hidden (not unlockable, just hidden) character that is returning to the Marvel fighting series, his debut in Children of the atom as a secret.
For the X-men side are returning characters of Wolverine, Cyclops, Storm, Magneto, and Juggernaut. Debuting to the series is Rogue, Sabretooth and Gambit.
Each character has a specific play style (close range, long range, mid range) and each have their own set of health and attacking power that I noticed (some characters die quicker than others. Others tend to hit harder too for being bulkier or harder to pull moves). The goal of the game is to defeat the opponent down to zero health to win. Instead of a round based system it’s a 2 vs 2 fight where it’s one round. First team to defeat both oppositions win the fight. A variation of the usual 2 rounds you tend to find from fighting games and it works out well for the game.
Many mechanics of Marvel Super Heroes and Alpha 2 (with a bit of darkstalkers, review on the works) are present in the game. Super jumps, super gauges and such make a return. Alpha counter gets removed and now consist of a tag counter. Use a meter of super to counter a move by switching to your tag partner. Air combos and juggling is prevalent in the game and is actually recommended but not necessary to give huge damage. You can easily switch to your tag partner by heavy punch and heavy kick pressed simultaneously. You can also execute a tag super with two meters, which causes both characters to come out and deal damage with two separate super moves from both characters. Finding the right two characters for a devastating combo is sometimes satisfying to execute.
The controls are mostly responsive at times while other it seems like it doesn’t register. Using a tag combo doesn’t work for me at times and when trying to tag out, it won’t happen at times (have to make sure you’re not being hit in which this was the case. Wasn’t getting hit but couldn’t tag). It feels frustrating at times when the controls aren’t responsive and feels a bit cheap when I lose a match due to the issue.
Other than that, with game modes you only have an arcade mode. There’s no hidden mode or anything so it’s just a regular coin-op.
It’s a 8 out of 10. Characters, move sets and mechanics give plenty to experiment but lack of modes and unresponsive controls at times hinder the rating.
Overall I’ve enjoyed this game. This was the official start of the Vs. series between marvel and Capcom and it only ever grows as the series goes forward. Sadly most characters won’t make a return to the series until way later on the series lifespan and they were fun to say (Rogue is definitely a favorite). I can see why this game was so popular back in the days and how it brought sequels after this one and expand the Marvel and Capcom franchise. This game I recommend playing for the pure experience and casual fun if you want to invest hours of it.

I remember playing this game at the comic store growing up. Just like the arcade. Still wish they would make DC vs. Marvel, that would be awesome.
