A children's game (Berenstain Bear Review)   tornadocam
Today I am going to be reviewing a game that is made for children. The game is based off of the Berenstain Bear children books. So were we go.
Story: 7
The plot in this game is pretty basic. The Berenstain Bear's (Mama Bear, Papa Bear, Sister Bear and Brother Bear) decide they will take a camping trip to the nearby forest. The Berenstain Bear cubs decide they want to explore the area. Papa Bear tells them to be careful and be to the tent by dark. The cubs set out to explore different areas of the forest while getting into mischief at the same time. Okay to analysis the plot in this story. I had to go back to how my mind was when I was a child since this is a Children's game. I did not feel like I could analysis this one in my current adult mine because I am an adult. I remember getting this game when I was young I want to think I was 8 or 9 when I got it. I remember thinking the plot was fun and nicely done. Back in my day children loved to explore areas. So from a child's point of view the plot would be pretty decent. Now back to my adult mind. The plot was pretty basic that is for sure. It would have been nice had they throw a little more creativity in. For example, they could have made the forest have a haunted reputation and the bears want to debunk it. On the other hand, this was a game meant for children.
Graphics: 8
The graphics of this game were actually pretty good. The levels are nicely done. The wooded level really looks nice, the trees look like trees. The colors are nicely done. The cave world was also nicely done. The water Level streams and mountains in the background really look colorful. This game had a lot of good backgrounds that fit the forest theme of this game. Now the controls were okay but sometimes while playing it seems like the bears would be a little sluggish at times. The sprints though are nicely done especially the enemies in this game. There really are no major lags in this game that I noticed last time I played it. So overall the graphics were pretty good for a Sega game. The only thing that brings the rating down a bit is the sluggish controls. I sometimes wonder if this game was not rushed somewhat.
Sound: 8
The sound in this game was pretty good. The wooded tree level I think it is called honey collection or honey hunting had a good sound. The sound in the honey level was kind of catchy when I played this game. The fishing level was also nicely done. The nature walk level had good music. The cave level had slow gloomy music which fit the theme nicely. The enemies how they sound are kind of unique especially when they pop out of nowhere. Not to mention some of them really had unique sounds when they attacked you.  The sound the bears make when they get hit is funny its like they are startled or stunned. However, there were at times were the sounds had a tingle to them. The cave music's theme fit the stage nicely but it kind of tingled some and at times it sounded like there was static. The haunted level also had that same feel to it. When I play games I like for them sound smooth. I do not like tingle and I do not like static. For one I think it makes the sound not sound as good. So the static and tingles kind of bring this games sound rating down just a little bit. But, it still has a good sound to it and as I mentioned a few of the tunes are catchy.
Addictiveness: 5
Okay when I was a child I really had fun playing this game. It was one of my favorite games to play on the Sega system. However, as I got older I started to go back to this game less.  Not because it was bad. This was a children's games and I will be honest as I grew older I moved on to more age appropriate games. I still will play this game once in a while but since I am an adult now I find myself playing this game the least. So since I enjoyed it when I was a child. I give the addictiveness in this game a middle of the road rating.
Depth: 6
This game when I first played it seemed like the depth was okay. There was a lot of items to collect such as fishes, honey, fruit and even diamonds. So that was nice that the makers of this game included that in this adventure. Also you can chose which bear you wanted to play with sister or brother bear. I often when I was younger would play this game through with one bear than again with the other bear. However, the stages in this game are real short. There is only 5 s stages or worlds in this game. It is not a huge game and it really should not take that long to beat. So why did I give it a moderate rating of 6 out of 10. The reason being was I was trying to think how this game felt when I was much younger. When I was younger I thought this game had some nice items to collect and the fact you could chose which bear you played with. If I rated this game as I normally do it would have gotten a lower rating.
Difficulty: 5
Here is were the game kind of suffers just a bit is the difficulty. The levels were not that bad the thing that made them tricky was just enemy placement. It was so easy to get hit in this game. Enemies would pop out of the ground, lake or even dive at you from the air. It was so easy to get hit in this game. If you were not careful you could actually get hit quite a bit in this game. However, the game gave you several chances to regain health so it was not that bad. Also the bosses were not hard at all. I wonder if the makers of this game did not make it that hard simply because it was a children's game. So based on that assumption I took that this was a children's game into consideration. Even as a Child I liked games that required skill, creativity and I just liked to be challenged. This game a few times does require creativity to get the items but even then it is not difficult. So I give the rating of this one a middle of the road rating. Mainly because of enemy placement and as I have stated several times this is a children's game. So it was not supposed to be that hard.
Overall: 8
The overall rating was kind of hard for me to rate mainly because this is a child's game. The plot was okay. I mean when I was growing up I can remember wanting to explore areas. Such as playing in creeks, walking through wooded areas, and just enjoying the trees. For me it was seeing God's Creations at work. So when I first got this game again when I was 8 or 9 I could relate to the plot. I guess that is what the makers of this game were trying to accomplish. I also had fun playing this game when I first got it. For a 8 or 9 year old this game seemed like a very good game, items to collect as well as exploring nature seemed cool. However, when I started to get closer to my teen years I stopped playing this game as much. I admit it I moved onto more adult themed games such as Mortal Kombat and more action paced games. It was not because this was a bad game. It was just that I got older so I kind of outgrew the Berenstain Bears. Now sometimes when I want to take a break from adulthood I will play this game. Because lets face it adulthood can be stressful. Work and bills add stress to you when your an adult. It is fun to go back to the times sometimes when you are a kid and there was really  no worries in the world :P. As for recommending this game here is were that gets complicated for me. From an adult view the plot of this game would sound kind of lame and the game can be kind of boring. However, if you are a child than this game is fun. So if you have children especially children under the age of 9 than by all means introduce them to this game. From a child's point of view this would be a fun game. If your a parent and concerned with violence in video games than this is a good game to play. So based on that I gave this game a good rating of 8.
