Super Mario Random Road - not as random as I thought! Pacman+Mariofan
Hi, today I will be reviewing a Super Mario 64 hack called Super Mario Random Road. Despite its name, the hack isn't random. However, the star you get at the end of the game adds 5 stars to the star counter on the top of the screen. It shows up as 4 on the File
Select screen though! That's pretty random :P I'm pretty sure that's why this game is called Super Mario Random Road.
This is a mini-hack, which means it's quite short for a hack of Super Mario 64. It contains one star, one level, one overworld, and one crazy and hectic Whomp boss. This hack doesn't have any custom dialogue but the hack itself is pretty original. :)
This hack features some ASM hacking, such as the wing cap being transformed into a Tanooki Mario power-up. Unfortunately, you don't get a Tanooki suit, but you get the Tanooki ears and very easy flying. Now instead of having to go up and down to control your speed while flying, you can fly at the same speed constantly. Let's get going with the review!
Graphics: 9/10You start the game off at the outside of Princess Peach's [s]ugly[/s] castle, just like Super Mario 64. However, as you try to go inside of the castle, you stop and look at the castle's main entrance doors. They have changed! Now they look like the yellow doors from Super Mario World. Other than that and the water below it being removed, the castle looks the same.
After you attempt to enter the castle, you're warped to a new overworld with custom graphics. Most of the switches in the overworld are recolored. The cap box looks just like the box for the Gold Tanooki Mario power-up in New Super Mario Bros. 2. When you open the box and grab the power-up, you get Tanooki ears on your hat. :)
Most of the graphics in this hack are from Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World. For example:
-The yellow blocks with 2 lines on them are from Super Mario World.
-The really bright blue blocks (the ones that are in the level you access from the overworld) are from Super Mario Bros. 3.
-The walls that you see surrounding the level are from Super Mario World.
-The note blocks are from Super Mario Bros. 3.
There's such a variety of graphics, both in the overworld and the level! The boss level doesn't have a variety of graphics though. There are
very many types of blocks, many ground textures, and many wall textures. All of them are done very well and they make the level and the overworld so colorful and unique. :D
Most of the enemies are the same texture as before, but the Whomps and the Whomp boss have different textures. They look even more evil than before and they fit the dark setting they are in. Also, the Shy Guys are blue instead of red.
Finally, the title screen is completely custom and it's done very bold and beautiful.
Sound (effects): 9/10I'm surprised that none of the sound effects in this hack are custom. They're all exactly the same as they were in Super Mario 64.
Sound (music): 9.5/10All of the songs in this hack except for the cap's theme are custom! The overworld theme is dark but quiet. The level's theme is loud, fast-paced, and exciting. There is no song for the boss area, but for the boss itself there's a dramatic and fast-paced song. All of the songs used in this hack are beautiful and very fitting to the areas they play in. :D
Addictiveness: 7/10Despite this hack's really short length, I find it pretty addicting. It's pretty challenging for me to beat (which I'll talk more about later). Also, many of the jumps I have to perform are very fun for me for some reason :P I want to keep beating it again and again so I get better at it. :)
Story: 2/10Same old, same old. NEXT! :P
Depth: 4/10All there is to beat in this game is one long level with one long boss. But It's pretty challenging and you only have one life, so it should take a while to beat. The first time I played this, it took me a little over 40 minutes to beat it. :)
Difficulty: 7/10This hack is pretty difficult, like I said before. It's mainly because of the fact that the boss is ridiculously hard and you only have one life. The level is also pretty difficult. Some of the jumps that you have to perform are pretty crazy. They're fun, though! None of the difficult things in this hack aren't fun except the Whomp boss battle.
Overall: 7/10This is a nice hack! It's very fun and suitable for people who want to test their Super Mario 64 skills!
Thank you so much for reading my review, and please leave me some feedback too. I'd appreciate it and I always listen to people's feedback. :)
