The Real Next Chapter to Mario Bros 1   SuperCrash64
Review Intro . As some of you may know Mario bros 2 was not a official made game .Because the actual real Game was here in Japan. On The Faicom short for Family Computer. The Reason being because Nintendo Thought it was too hard for The United States Americans. So instead of Getting an Actual made game. The United States aka in North America Release. Got A Texture and Music Hack of Japans Doki Doki Panic game.  For The North America Release of Mario Bros 2 . Which I did not Understand Why it was so hard for North America Citizens. Considering The Fact Nintendo Had released very Hard games Like Contra. And Other Games that were pretty hard.Although The North America Released happened later on. In Super Mario All stars . Or Super Mario all Stars + Super Mario world. Nintendo  changed the Title To Super Mario Bros The Lost levels. But that was Before Nintendo Released Their Super Nintendo system,

Graphics -
The Graphics are Exactly The Same As the Original Mario Brothers for The Nintendo Entertainment System . With Some Minor Changes like the Clouds now Smile and have eyes in the background. Also Different Changes for Level Design. Which is Expected Sense This Was the Actual Next Chapter or Squeal to Mario Bros .  Anyways Graphics Wise Gets a 10 . Nearly the Same as Mario Bros 1 With Some Changes.
Sound .
Again This is The Same Stuff That the Original Mario Brothers For The Nintendo Entertainment System, You Got every Jump coin sound effects as well as some other ones. The Soundtrack is Also using the Same stuff as Mario Bros 1. Anyways Gets A 9 . Honestly with the good sound chip. That The Nintendo Nes had. They could have changed The Music like in Mario Brothers 3.
Addictiveness The Same Reason is the long lasting Gameplay . This thing offers the good soundtrack controls. It is a bit more fun than the. Original Mario bros because its harder. Addictiveness Gets a 10 I found the Great soundtrack and good controls to be the best aspect of this game,
Story 5 usual Stuff Bowser has kidnapped Peach you need to Be Mario Or Luigi to go Save her.  The Reason Being Bowser Wants To rule . The Mushroom Kingdom. But Mario Always Seems to stop him . As usual Bowsers uses Peach to trick Mario and try to take him down.with All his Koopas and Goombas. To help.
Depth    Really it offers A lot of Levels and tricky ways To Beat them. All Music Story Graphics are the same. Even has the Annoying Toad at the End of the 1st Boss. Its Still hard and the game is pretty long . So Depth Gets A 10
Difficulty 7 they did Make Some Levels and Platforms Harder to Reach or access. The Original Mario Bros .Was Pretty hard To Beat. This one is Slightly harder . Controls Work the same has all responsiveness that you Expect.

Overall/final Ratings Its A great Game I still didn't understand Nintendo,s reason why they did not include this In The North America Version of Mario Bros 2 . 9.5 For Final Ratings

The True Heir To The Original Masterpiece!   sonicthehedgeho..
Super Mario Bros is best known as one of the most famous and recognizable games in the world as it is what brought back the gaming franchise from it's extinction in 1983 and made Nintendo one of the top rated and best selling gaming company's so it was pretty obvious that with the great success from Super Mario Bros that a sequel would be made and released in North America.....Right? Well we did get a Super Mario Bros. 2 game in North America however this was not the TRUE sequel to the original game as the real sequel was made in Japan but do to it's much higher difficulty when compared to the original and Japan decided that because of that they wouldn't release this game and instead would release a changed version of their own Japanese game Doki Doki Panic but changed the characters with Mario characters. Now that we have the history of this game done with let's move on to the review of the Real Super Mario Bros. 2!
Graphics: 8 out of 10
The graphics in this game are basically the same as the original game with few minor changes such as the grounds having a different look to the clouds and tree's having eyes added to them as well as the platforms in levels having a mushroom look instead of it's normal look so the graphics aren't that much of a step up but I would still say that they are great and they show alot of creativity in them so I must applaud Nintendo for still making the graphics appealing even with only a few minor details so an 8 out of 10 is what graphics deserve for this game.
Sound: 6 out of 10
Sound in this game isn't much different  just like the graphics but there are some few changes made such as when you quickly turn left or right you have a sliding sound that plays for a few seconds and the theme when you save princess peach is different and sound better in my opinion. The sound that plays inside the castle's, underwater levels, underground levels, and normal levels are all the same so the music hasn't made a huge step up but Nintendo was just at the beginning so you can't really fault them for not improving the music or sound effects much so a 6 out of 10 is what I'm giving the sound for this game.
Story: 5 out of 10
Well the story hasn't changed at all it's exactly the same as the original game "You have to go rescue the princess named Peach because her guards the toads are always messing up and are horrible at protecting her so you Mario/Luigi must go and save her from Bowser yet again and stop bowser by kicking his butt out of this world. Same story but still lives up to it's original story so at least a 5 out of 10 is what the story of this game deserves.
Addictiveness: 8 out 10
Now even though the story & sound really didn't change that much  the addictiveness value actually did jump up higher from it's predecessor. The reason why this has a higher level of addictiveness is because of the fact that the difficulty was raised which made players want to make it further until the end of the game and even when you reach the end of the game there are still more things that you can do such as beating the game 8 times to be able to go to world A-D from the title or even making it to world 9 in the game which can only be accomplished if you make it all the way through the game without using any warp pipes. Also once you get to level 9 you only have one life and if you reach the end of stage 9-4 you will see blocks made out to look like the Japanese letters アリガトウ which mean "Thank You" most likely meaning thanks for buying and playing this game which you may think well that's pretty pointless to see level 9 just for that but it's actually better when you actually see it for yourself and even just the idea of that is very interesting how they put that in a level in the game. With it's higher level of difficulty, secret levels, and stage selects I'd have to say an 8 out of 10 is deserved here.
Depth: 8 out of 10
If you include all the extra levels that you can get to then this game is 2x longer than the original Super Mario Bros also since the difficulty is higher it makes the game last longer since it is harder to beat which isn't a bad thing  so don't think it's something that makes the game bad as the first Super Mario Bros was a little too easy to beat even when it first came out so the 2nd game give the player more of a challenge and makes it more fun. Like I said in the addictiveness section there is a way to make it to 2 hidden worlds called World 9 and Worlds A-D. So a 8 out of 10 is how the depth in my opinion should be rated well not much else to say here so let's move on.
Difficulty: 9 out of 10
When this game was made the developers decided to add some extra difficulty to the game since the first game was fairly easy however with the way that they made the game harder they thought it would be too hard for Americans so they chose to keep it in Japan I don't know why they made this choice as the difficulty in this game isn't nightmare hard as the difficulty is a little less than the Mega Man series and the difficulty makes this games more fun to play. The reasons that make this game harder are that some levels include spots were you have to make major jumps to make it to the other side or you have to repeatedly jump on enemies heads in a pattern so you can make it to the other side which can be difficult especially when there are several paratroopas that you have to jump on while they fly back and forth however it isn't an impossible task. Also they added a power-down item called a Poison Mushroom where if you grab one when you are big Mario you'll turn into small Mario and if you're small Mario then you will lose one life which makes you have to choose whether to hit certain blocks or not which is a good addition in the game, so all in all a rating of 9 out of 10 sounds pretty fair here.
That's Super Mario Bros. 2 (JPN) in a nutshell, Like I said I don't know why this game wasn't released on the NES in North America even though eventually it did get released on the SNES game Super Mario All-Stars and was renamed Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels but it still doesn't feel the same without the same 8-bit graphics but that's just me. It is a shame that we didn't get this game in North America but instead we got a different Super Mario Bros 2 but that is a game for another review.

The real sequel like it should be.   Azul Fria
OVERVIEW

Initially unreleased in the United States because of the difficulty, we ended up with a hack of Doki Doki Panic instead for Super Mario Bros 2. I wouldn't really call this a sequel but more of an updated version of the first Mario Bros. but you know the story by now., Mushroom Kingdom was once a peaceful land where Princess Toadstool (Peach) rules over her subjects called Toads (Kinopios) with a gentle heart. As with all peaceful  settings there is always going to be an evil being to come around to take it all away. In this case, the evil King Koopa (Bowser) has kidnapped the princess in hopes of making him his unwilling bride. He then turns everyone in the Mushroom Kingdom to blocks. That is everyone except to recent outsiders named Mario Mario and Luigi Mario whom are better known as the Mario Bros. They mysteriously ended up in Mushroom Kingdom by getting sucked down the drain and now it's up to them to rescue everyone once more.

GRAPHICS - A+

The only changes is this game are basically the flooring in the overworld and the underworld as instead of stones, you are running across crushed rubble. I still applaud the excellent use of backgrounds and sprites used to create a level. As I've said before, from a programmer's standpoint you'll notice how everything is technically the same size regardless of if its a background tile, character or enemies because everything is drawn within a bounding box. Almost everything is drawn within a 16 x 16 bounding box. The only two notable exceptions are Big Mario and Bowser who are 16 (w) x 32 (h) and 32 x 32. Guess you can add fireballs (and to an extent, the firebar) as the flames are 8 x 8. A bonus at the ending of the game is that Princess Toadstool no longer looks like an ugly dog when you rescue her, she looks like an actual princess and says a wonderful poem at the end. The mushrooms have also been updated to look a little bit thinner. There is even a new item that actually serves as a power down instead of a powerup. It is a Poison Mushroom that turns big Mario into small Mario. If you were small Mario already, I'll play TAPS for you. Another added feature is the wind that occurs in some levels. Leaves will blow by you at various speeds to indicate the wind is blowing. You will also meet Red Piranha plants, Grey Koopas, Mushroom sinking platforms, and sometimes cloudy platforms.

SOUND - A

With Nintendo putting in some early elbow grease during this time, the sound is top of the line. The sound comes out immediately after certain actions are made such as when you gain a power-up or kill an enemy. Matter of fact, just about every sound that was produced in this game was used within everybody's imagination whenever they did or saw something fancy or stupid. On a personal note, the invincibility theme usually comes to mind when watching a football game during a play that results in touchdown from far away but I'll talk about music in the next section since it will give a small lesson.

MUSIC - A

The only thing that has changed as far as the music goes is that, at the end when you rescue Princess Toadstool (Peach), the ending theme gets an actual extension which makes the sound more full. You can hear the 16-bit version of the song on Super Mario All-Stars.

CONTROLS - A-

The controls were the only part of the first game that hurt it. There were times when you were in a tight situation and the control failed to respond to the press of the button and thus you ended up biting the dust. It didn't hurt too bad but a split second can determine the difference between life and death especially when trying to hop over pits and you end up running off into the abyss to your doom. This led to tremendous frustration when far into the game.

But guess what? The controls hurt even more in this game and it has everything to do with Mario and Luigi having different jumping abilities that serve as a differential separator between the two. Mario doesn't jump very high or far but the good part is that he can stop on the dime when he lands from a horizontal jump but Luigi, on the other hand, can jump long distances but unlike Mario he has no traction so when he lands from a horizontal jump, he will take a few extra steps before stopping and that can lead to him waltzing right into a pit or an enemy and that's not good.

REPLAYABILITY - A+

Replayability is surprisingly the selling factor for this game. You don't have to worry about begging for more for this game as this game gives you so much more than those eight levels. The blessing part about this game being on the Famicom Disk System is it saves your progress when you beat the game. Some people have a hard time beating the game without using a single warp zone but lo and behold, there is a special reward for beating all eight levels in one shot without using a warp zone. You get a free trip to World 9 where you pretty much play a bonus game of surviving 4 sub-levels that loop over and over this you die once. The extra stuff doesn't stop there folks. If you beat the game just once, you get a star on the title screen. Beat the game eight times (you'll have eight stars) then enter a code and you will get to play through worlds A-D. Some are even updated versions of previous worlds.

OVERALL - A+

As you noticed, I started using the grading system for ratings. The reason that I have given the overall score of 9.7 is the reason I didn't give the first Super Mario Bros a 10. The controls can make or break you in this game and now it is more evident as Mario and Luigi having more different physics than each other. Other than that the game is flawless and is a real good gem to have if you can get your hands on it or its Lost Levels incarnation which is updated graphics into 16-bit mode.

True super Mario bros 2 review!   Stevie 764
That's right, the REAL super Mario bros 2 is here to be reviewed in this review!
The thing is, all the music and sound are from super Mario bros 1.
The story of the game is just like super Mario bros 1, the italian plumbers have to save the princess once again in a hard challenge against bowser!
If this game wasn't so hard, I wouldn't have had pikachu shake his tail at it.
The graphics are the same, except for smiling clouds and the different colored pipe in world 9 underwater.
This game features 32 more levels with 20 bonus levels so that means that there is a total of 52 LEVELS!
No, it just referenced action 52, NOOOOOOOOO! :(
This game is easy to pick up and play if you have Mario all stars, or on virtual console.
Overall, this game is good, it has everything from Mario 1 back, features more levels than before, and has a new powerup aka power down, poison mushrooms are dark and shrink or kill you like an enemy.
Hints: beat the game 8 times, at the title, hold A and press start.
Beat the game without warping and you'll enter the fantasy world 9!
Go above the ceiling in world 1-2, go in the first pipe, and find hidden blocks, then you find world 4.
In world 5-2, find a hidden beanstalk, takes you to world 8!
This game is one of the best Mario games, although my favorite is STILL super Mario 64!

Super Mario Bros. 2 - The Lost Sequel   pacman1755
This game is what you would call a lost sequel. This game was created in Japan and stayed in Japan. After they tried to go through Nintendo America, the company marked the game "Too hard for the American gamer to play" and shipped it back to Japan. It was never seen again. Until Super Mario All Stars where it was included in the game. So let's get to reviewing the lost sequel.
DIFFICULTY: 6
The game is pretty tough, it is not a hack, and it has this kind of challenges. I gotta say this game is probably one of the hardest Mario games that is a non hack. There is a lot of obstacles, bad guys, and even MORE PUZZLES. Yeah its pretty tough. I had to use save states it was that tough. I know some of you can get through this game without save states, but that can happen only when you know everything that's gonna happen.
DEPTH: 4
The game isn't that long. Its pretty much exactly the same as the previous games and the future games. The game only has 8 worlds. It has some secret Warp Zones that aren't the same as the previous games. Overall, it shouldn't be any trouble beating it besides the obstacles. Yeah, there is actually new warps in this game, even a BAD warp zone that warps you back to World 1. It can be evil at times, but really not that long.
STORY: 3
The story is not new at any length at all. Its the same story as Super Mario Bros. King Bowser has captured Princess Peach again, so Mario and Luigi got to go back through the Mushroom Kingdom and beat Bowser one more time to rescue Peach again. They rehashed it really. There is no improvements to the story. Yet, there isn't any bad decisions to it either. So its alright overall.
ADDICTIVENESS: 9
The game is pretty cool. I have a lot of fun with the game. The game has pretty much the same fun as the original Mario Bros., the fun didn't go away, and after you get the hang of it, you'll play it again, and again, and again. I can say with personal activity with the game, I played it a lot of times after I beaten it. Its really fun. Just like the original Mario Bros, I can't get enough of this one bit. I can nearly guarantee, that you will feel the same way as I did.
SOUND: 7
The sound is rehashed. No improvements again, but the reason for the higher ratings is that it has the classic feeling to it. It isn't completely corrupted that you don't recognize it at all. When you play it, you will feel automatically that you are playing a Mario game. The jump sound, the music, everything. Its all there, and it is still the best retro out there.
GRAPHICS: 9
The game has made big improvements in a few graphics. The ground, the sky, even the bushes in the background, they all have new and improved graphics. I am really impressed. The graphics overall, have fantastic improvements. Identical to the previous, but I really enjoy the fact they did something different. Bravo.
OVERALL: 9.4
The game overall is probably one of the best game and hardest game that isn't a hack at all.
Final Verdict:This game is great, I still don't really understand how they can turn down a game like this.
Do I recommend playing it now: Yes
The final verdict says it all. I really love the entire game. It has its flaws, but its really fun. That's what made the great review, the fun of the game. That's all that really matters, the enjoyment of the game plays the biggest role in ANY review. I enjoyed it. You should too.
Thanks for reading.

Super Rage-io Brothers   CrestedPeak9
Super Mario Brothers was the amazingly successful platformer from Nintendo that almost single-handedly saved the gaming industry from the disaster known as Custer's Revenge and E.T. The Extra Terrestrial. People simply fell in love with it.
A bit of backstory to this game is that this wasn't supposed to be played by us non-Japanese. The Nintendo of America overlord disliked this game being just 'more levels' to the original and re-textured Doki Doki Panic to release the wild, wacky Mario 2 that the rest of the world got, known as Super Mario USA in Japan.
Enough history, let's get into the gameplay.
GRAPHICS
I think it's clear by now that Super Mario Bros. 2 is no remake. It simply takes the original's graphics and adds eyes to everything. The clouds have eyes, the bushes have eyes, and everything is just looking at Mario as he jumps by. To be completely fair, there are a few new sprites, including the Poison Shroom and the new Mushroom Platforms, because Bowser ran out of metal to build courses.
SOUND
It is the same as the original's, and just as addicting. But for some reason the SFX seems to bug out for me. Either way, it's golden.
STORY
Mario games have been known for their poor stories, especially the platformers. While the RPGs might have good stories, most games don't and it is almost PAINFUL to go through. For the sake of a review, I have to write this:
Mario goes through 32 levels to save Princess Peach from the evil clutches of Bowser and restore peace to the land, while unintentionally rescuing 7 annoying Toad Retainers along the way.
DEPTH
This game actually has 52 levels accessible normally instead of 32, which expands the range of levels to play. You have the regular Worlds 1 to 8, a garbage world 9 Miyamoto left in the code as an experiment, and secret Letter Worlds A to D. Hey, you even get a star each time you clear Worlds 1-8 or Worlds A-D! We all know that's the most important.
DIFFICULTY
Are you kidding?! I barely have to talk about how difficult this game is! Start the the first level as an example. The game intentionally hides the Super Mushroom and hitting the Question Blocks gets you a new mushroom. Let's collect it! And... oh... I just died?
You'll quickly learn that the game is made to kill your soul. Dying is now a huge penalty, as you now have to redo incredibly unforgiving levels. The Starman is now not always welcome, struggling with looping  mazes is tough, Super Mario is sometimes a nuisance than a blessing as he is too tall, and you must get used to not swearing at hearing the musical notes B-F-F-F-E-D-C-E-E-C.
ADDICTIVENESS
I have beat this game three separate times, all three times using save states. I really doubt I would play it again. The pressure of playing through the entire game is too much, and I rarely have long periods of free time.

Super Mario Bros. 2 (Japan) review   IgorBird122
Here's another review by IB122, and this review is on Super Mario Bros. 2 (Japan), this game was only released in Japan because they felt like the game is way too difficult to be played in Europe and North America so we got the Doki Doki Panic game instead thus created a lot of confusion with the Super Mario Bros 2 title between both games, and we haven't seen this game until All-Stars was released 1993 (7 years later) and the Europeans and North Americans seen what was missed out. Anyways, lets get started with the review.
The Graphics:
The Graphics in this game has changed quite a bit from the first Super Mario Bros. game like the flooring looks very different that they have, plus with a lot of newer scenery add into the game which makes this game pretty nice and original, as for the character sprites, they haven't changed from the last game.
I give this a 9 out of 10
------
The Sound/Music:
The Music and sounds hasn't all changed than we seen from the last game, so I ain't going to say a whole lot about this or anything, but even with the same tunes and same sound effects, they still sound pretty good in this game.
I give this a 8 out of 10
------
The Addictiveness:
This game does got a tiny big of more addiction than seen in the last game, in this game, you got the classic stuff you seen in the first Mario game, and you added in a little bit of better graphics, and the gameplay in this game also it the reason that people that loves this game to come back and play more of this game and it's very fun to try out.
I give this a perfect 10 out of 10
------
The Story:
The story takes place after the events of Super Mario Bros. after Mario defeated Bowser once and for all, but did he, the answer is no, Bowser came back and kidnaps here once again and Mario (and Luigi) is off to save Princess Peach once again and goes thought a newer land that we haven't seen in the last game, and just like the last game, Mario and Luigi goes into 7 different castle and they all contain False Bowser, so like the last game, lucky castle 8 is the castle that has the real Bowser and Princess Peach.
I give this a 9 out of 10
------
The Depth:
They're sure is a whole lot of interesting things added into this game like the Poison Mushroom which can harm Mario (or Luigi) just like when you hit an enemy and that can trick you really well. Not just newer things in the game, but you got more levels to play on that you haven't seen in the first game, which makes the game long and gamers loves longer levels to play and tht's great to have, once you beat Bowser in world 8, instead of ending it there, you can continue onto World 9 and then World A though D which to my mind is very fascinating, more levels are always great.
I give this a perfect 10 out of 10
------
The Difficulty:
This was pretty much the reason why this game wasn't released outside of Japan because they ain't kidding, this game is quite hard at some points hear and there and I have to say that some levels has taken be for like ever to beat and I mean ever to beat, like it took me days to weeks to beat one level and that is really challenging for the player, but I manage to beaten some of those very difficult levels though.
I give this a 9 out of 10
------
The Overall:
Overall, this game should of been released outside of Japan, because even know it is a challenge game, but this was a pretty good game nonetheless, even know we had to wait on the All-Star version to come out and we all experience the game and how it was like, but some non-Japanese hardcore gamers manage to get a Famicom and played this game outside of Japan to play Super Mario Bros. 2 (Japan).
Overall, I give this game a 9.2 out of 10

Nintendo: doesn't want us thinking Mario=pain so we pathetic americans are given a bootleg. Capcom: they made megaman, one of the hardest long retro series and it was amazing hey, at least Mario became the big face of gaming by this point
Awesome5000 12-19-14 - 06:12 PM

MysteryMan007, they didn't say we were too stupid, Nintendo of America didn't want the series to be known for frustration so they cancelled the American release and instead made an entirely new title.
MysteryMan007 09-05-14 - 04:33 PM
The Americans among us should find motivation to beat this game because I once read somewhere that during the original release, Japan literally said we were too stupid for this game. This game may be hard but so what, beat it and prove them wrong.

I did not make it far in this version but if its like the super nintendo version to get to world 9 you cant warp worlds
Francis T Lopaz 04-13-14 - 02:32 AM
In case you want A through D levels, you need to beat the game eight times before you can play A through D.
Francis T Lopaz 04-13-14 - 02:31 AM
Now that I figured to get Worlds A through D, I will tell you how. Hold the X key then press Enter or Return. Now that I beat the entire SMB2 Japan, I can finally retire this game I played.

This game is pretty awesome, but it is WAY to hard. I can manage to get through it though. I would only recommend this game for the patient. After all, it is for people who've mastered Super Mario Bros. Awesome game, and it's my first time playing it too
