The smallest test hack I have ever seen   Pacman+Mariofan
Review Preview
Hey, vizzed members! I’m Pac and I’m about to review a super short test hack of Super Mario 64, called Super Mario 64 GP64. Why would I review something so short? Because I can and I wanted to. :D
I’m only going to be talking about the new things this hack has, not the rest of it. That would be silly.
GRAPHICS
5/10
The first level is good-looking but plain. The grass at the start is light green, the platforms are white and gray, and the rest of the grass is green. The walls of the hill are a mix of red and green colors that, from far away, look light brown. There’s a bright blue sky above the level. I think that with how simple the level itself is, it fits but it could be much better.
The 2nd level is a little less plain. The platforms aren’t all the same. The lava is a bright blue color that’s appealing to the eye, and one of the platforms is a dark blue with an interesting texture. The rest of the platforms and ground, though, are so basic. They’re white and gray without much texture to them. The best part, though, is the red lava-wall area. The bright red is also very good-looking and it isn’t too close to Mario’s red color. Finally, the sky is pitch black which emphasizes the brightness of the lava.
Finally, there’s the ending platform. It looks like a target but without a lot of rings. Plus, it’s gray and white, not just 2 shades of the same color.
MUSIC
7/10
The music for Course 1 is catchy and fast-paced but my problem with it is the fuzz sound throughout most of the song. It makes the notes sound like they’re blaring even though they aren’t that loud.
Course 2’s music sounds much better than Course 1’s. It sounds peaceful or sad, whichever way you look at it. I have heard multiple Super Mario 64 imports of the same song and this one sounds as good, if not better, than the one in Super Mario 64 Shining Stars. Also, it fits in with the level’s appearance.
DEPTH
1/10
This was meant to be a test hack so I understand why there are only 2 levels with one star in each one. It still stinks that this takes me 4 minutes at the most to beat, though. The first level I can easily fly through, and the 2nd one I can too once I memorize where all the collision problems are.
ADDICTIVENESS
1/10
The hack has 2 stars so of course it wouldn’t make me want to beat it again and again. The only reason I want to play it more than once is to see how fast I can beat the game.
STORY
0/10
Since it’s a test hack, it shouldn’t need a story. But in case anyone was wondering, I put this here anyway. :P
DIFFICULTY
3/10
The only thing that makes this hack not very easy is the collision. It isn’t too bad in Course 1 where it’s just a hill, but in Course 2 it’s horrible. Multiple platforms in the level have spots you can’t access because they are blocked by an invisible wall. That makes you have to lose health to lava-bounce onto one of the square platforms.
If there wasn’t any collision issues, people who haven’t played Super Mario 64 would beat this hack easily.
OVERALL (not counting story)
3.4/10
For a test hack, this still isn’t all that good. However, I’m glad the creator decided to release it in the first place. It was worth the few minutes of my time I took to play it the first time, and I liked the small levels that are, aside from collision, beginner-friendly.
Thank you for clicking on this review! I’m sorry if anyone is disappointed I chose to review a small test hack, but I decided to do it because I think this hack is interesting and one that should be checked out by players of all skill levels. Have a great day!
