This is what Super Mario Brothers would look like if it was programmed badly.   ihateschool2004
Hello again. I've been on a quest to make reviews on pirated games. But this time, it's Super Boy II, the sequel to the original Super Boy, but this time it's a copy of Super Mario Brothers - The Lost Levels. I have edited this to make sure it's much better. The game originally appeared on the MSX in 1989, but how did it get onto the Sega Master System? Anyway, let's get onto the review.
GRAPHICS: 2/10
The graphics are from the original Mario game. Some of them are slightly edited, like the castle tiles. Also, the colours don't actually look the same to the original on the MSX, they are just brighter or darker. Even the sprites were not used without permission by Nintendo.
SOUND: 5/10
Some of the sounds are funny, compared to the block breaking sound if Super Boy (well, he looks like Mario) had a mushroom.
ADDICTIVENESS: 3/10
I find this very unusual. Somehow I might play another game as I don't find this one amusing. There is one problem, that you only get points for collecting a coin,
not for killing enemies. Buzzy Beetles and Koopas weren't programmed properly. Instead, when you stomp on them, they just die. They are supposed to move in their shells! Some item boxes are randomized, some have coins,
some have mushrooms and some have fire flowers. Even though, you have to jump higher enough just to get a big score from the flagpole.
STORY: None
No, really. There's no story in the game. What do you think I would explain? Super Boy trying to save a Princess? That's Mario's job!
DEPTH: 8/10
The game will take a few hours or minutes to finish. But somehow the castle levels for me are tricky.
Now, you've been waiting for...
THE DIFFICULTY: 7/10
The controls are a little bad. They are very irritating and the more frustrating the controls are, the more harder the game becomes.
You know, the Super Boy series is a knock-off to the Mario series. But anyway, that's my review for the Super Boy II MSX to Master System review. See you next time!

More of the same   NovemberJoy
Super Boy is a good example of what happens when people without a conscience see something that's popular - they plagiarize it and try to make it big by pretending to be the popular thing. To be fair, though, copyright laws in Korea weren't as fleshed out as they were in other countries at the time this game was made - digital software legally couldn't be copyrighted at all in Korea! In other words, what they did was wrong, but technically not illegal. Does that really matter, though? Not really. What matters is if Super Boy 2 is actually a decent game, or even a slight improvement over its predecessor.
The graphics are completely unchanged. Every single asset here can also be found in the original Super Boy, which reeks of laziness. Even the game they were trying to copy, the Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2, bothered to change some of the graphics as well as adding in new mechanics, and it was criticized as being too similar to the original. The SMS version has slightly darker colors than the MSX version, but it otherwise looks exactly the same.
The sound is also the same as in the original Super Boy, which really makes this look like a rushed cash-in on something that wasn't a cash cow in the first place. Considering that the sound in the first Super Boy game wasn't that hot to begin with, it's not any better when you're listening to it in a slightly different game. There's still only two music tracks, and the sound effects aren't all that great, either.
The gameplay is also very similar. You just run to the right, jumping over things and stomping on enemies while hitting bricks for coins and power-ups. Does that sound familiar at all? If it doesn't, then there's something very wrong, because it's only a brief description of one of the most famous games ever made! Super Boy looks similar on first glance, but all you have to do is play it to see exactly what's wrong with the picture.
The physics haven't been improved in the slightest. Super Boy still slides around and floats in mid-air like a feather whenever he jumps, although he falls like a stone if you drop off a ledge instead of jumping. The awkward physics make it difficult to jump precisely, since Super Boy drops like a rock as soon as you let go of the jump button. Don't even think of trying to use the run button, either - unless you're using it to jump over a huge gap, you might as well consider yourself dead as soon as you touch it. If you try to run, you'll slip and slid so much that you'll end up either falling into a pit or hitting an enemy.
Because this game's based off of the same engine as the original Super Boy, all of the glitches that the original game had are still present, such as the horrible screen tearing whenever the screen scrolls and the ability to jump in mid-air right after landing on an enemy. There is a bizarre bug that I can't believe wasn't found - if you push the start button, the game resets to the title screen. Why is that even in the game? Isn't Start usually the button that pauses the game? I have to believe this is a debugging feature that was accidentally left in or something, because it doesn't seem intentional at all.
As you might expect, all of the other flaws that the original Super Boy had are still present. All of the enemies die in one hit, which means there's no shell-kicking or anything like that. The coin boxes are completely random, and will almost always only give out coins, which makes them a waste of time in most circumstances. The level design is really bad, and the enemy placement is even worse, which results in many cheap deaths. The game still doesn't actually have a definitive ending, and there still aren't any continues to help you through the 16 difficult levels this game has to offer. All of this and more was in the original game, which just proves that this was a rush job.
I still have trouble telling if it's supposed to be the second half of Super Boy 1 or if it's supposed to be Zemina's answer to the Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2. It has 16 levels just like the first game, which would make sense if they were trying to make a second half to Super Boy to match the original Super Mario Bros.'s 32 levels, but the level designs seem to be attempting to copy the Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2 in several ways. Will this mystery ever be solved? Probably not, because nobody cares enough about Super Boy to figure it out.
To sum things up, it's basically the exact same game as the first with different levels. None of the bugs were fixed, nothing was improved, and there's overall no good reason to play it. To add insult to injury, the SMS version is exactly the same as the MSX version, all the way down to the choppy scrolling that looked horrible but was necessary on the MSX. Why would you not take advantage of more powerful hardware? This reeks of laziness in every possible aspect, and it's the biggest waste of time I've ever reviewed. Please stay away from this one.
*All of a sudden, Super Boy bursts through the window*
Super Boy: Hey, are you talking bad about my games again?
Joy: Are you serious right now? Didn't we already do this years ago?
Super Boy: I know-a, but I can't resist doing the same thing again and again!
Joy: That explains a lot, actually.
*Suddenly, Mario jumps through the broken window*
Mario : I finally found-a you! You know where you're-a going, right? They're gonna send-a you to Copyright Jail!
Super Boy: Not if I can beat you up first!
Joy: Come on, not again...
-end-

Oh boy woohoo, it's Super Boy 2!   Pacman+Mariofan
Oh boy woohoo, it's Super Boy II! This game is the sequel to Super Boy I and it's basically a Sega Master System version of Super Mario Bros 2: The Lost Levels. It started out only being on the MSX, but then Zemina ported it to the Sega Master System. It’s very similar to Super Boy I (which you will notice throughout this review XD) but has it improved any of the flaws that Super Boy I had? Or is it even worse? Read this review to find out. Let’s-a go!
Graphics (looks of objects): 7/10
The graphics are pretty much the same as Super Boy I but there are less glitchy graphics in this game. There are still some though. In world 1-2, a section that has many coins lined up like soldiers has some glitchy objects below it that seem to be parts of question-mark blocks.
One mistake I noticed about the graphics is that even though the sky is supposed to be black in world 2, it’s the same dark blue color as the other worlds. Come on, even Super Boy I didn’t make that mistake and it’s made by the same people! In that game the sky is black in world 3, just like it’s supposed to be.
Other than those things, everything else is the same as Super Boy I. The other objects look the same and the game-pooping-itself pause glitch is still there.
Graphics (animations): 5/10
Unlike the regular graphics which have some slight differences, the animations are the exact same as Super Boy I. The Koopas still die from Mario’s foot hitting their faces instead of you kicking their shell to kill them, and the scrolling is still choppy. The power-up animations and cut-scenes are still rushed too.
Sound (effects): 3/10
A few of the sound effects are kind of good, but the rest sound nothing like the original Super Mario Bros. sound effects. The block-breaking noise is just a beep, and it’s the worst sound effect in the game. However, the creators of this game and Super Boy I nailed it with the coin sound effect!
Sound (music): 6.5/10
The music soundtrack, like the animations, are the exact same as Super Boy I which I think is a good thing. If the creators of this game tried to change the music it might get worse. But they still should have attempted to make a castle theme instead of re-using the underground theme for castles!
Addictiveness: 8.5/10
This is where things get more interesting, and different from Super Boy I. I find this game even more addicting! That’s because there are more tricky yet fun jumps to perform and there are more enemies to dodge which can also be fun.
Story: Still no story?/10
Well, Super Boy I’s ending said “To be continued” so I thought that Super Boy II would put the princess at the end of the final level, but instead it gives me a message that says “End”. Yeah, that’s it. Mario’s quest is meaningless. The enemies’ attempts to stop him are pointless. Mario gets nothing except experience for doing all this! And the message at the end of the previous castles is just “Go! Next stage”. That’s all the motivation he gets. There aren’t even any Toads there to support him.
Depth: 5/10
This game only contains the first 4 worlds of Super Mario Bros 2: The Lost Levels. However it will almost certainly take you a long time to beat it even if you use savestates (which I did). Once you do beat it, it takes you back to the beginning so you play until you lose all your lives. That means the game is endless o_o
Difficulty: 9/10
This game is even more difficult than Super Boy I. I wasn’t surprised about that, especially since Super Mario Bros 2: The Lost Levels is more difficult than Super Mario Bros. The Cheep Cheep levels in this game are even more brutal and many of your jumps have to be even more precise. Even in 1-2 it can already be quite a struggle.
Overall: 6/10
In my opinion, this game is worse than Super Boy I. The first one was already difficult and this one is harder. There are more mistakes with the graphics, the ending is boring, and I have to use savestates more often to beat the game. However, I’m still more addicted to it! If you want to play a Super Boy game I recommend playing the first one. This one I would recommend for a really great challenge though.
Thank you for reading this review, I appreciate it! Sorry it’s so short but I didn’t want to repeat a lot of what I said in my Super Boy I review, and I really wanted to make a review of Super Boy II.
