I am amazed that I found a Spongebob game for the Game Boy Color here on Vizzed. I am a huge fan of Sponge bob ever since I was 4, and it's one of my childhood icons. This game however has some awkward things in this game even though that this one of the first Sponge bob games.
The graphics are mediocre and it's almost legit for a Nickelodeon Game Boy game. The only thing I like about the graphics is the cut scenes, it's just like the show but 8-bit like. The game play is the worst thing about the graphics. The characters in the game play are made bad and looks awkward. The houses are good or whatever the graphic designer looks them like 8-bit like? It's sort of half bad-half good graphics. Whoever made the graphics of the game should get video game graphic lessons because it is awkward. Also, the levels are kinda bad with the graphics because it looks like nothing like the show but the houses aren't including Goo Lagoon.
The sound of this game is sort of cool. It sounds like the show sometimes whenever you hear some of the music. It's really traditional for it's Gameboy Color sound since it's like many Game Boy games. I really didn't experience most of the sound so literally it's good.
The addictiveness of this game is averagely good for people who are big fans of Sponge bob. I think that the game is sort of good that it should played again for the people who owned this game on the Game Boy Color. The fun thing about this game that it has Infinity Lives, I think.
The story of this game is simple. Spongebob has a quest to find the key for the Golden Spatula from the Flying Dutchman and he interacts with his friends from the show which is Patrick, Sandy and Squidward if anyone has rookie knowledge of the show. Also Sponge bob has items that help him defeat the Flying Dutchman.
The depth is sort of average for a 2001 video game. It is like mostly good for anyone who went through the intro and Downtown. I really like it. It is really not that bad for it. I have nothing to say left for the depth.
The difficulty of this game is really hard. The controls are good but the thing that's important of the reason why the difficulty is so hard because you have to concentrate for the enemies. They would hit you and THAT enemy would be those little red clams that you recognize in some of the episodes of Spongebob. The other enemies would also be the Bubble Bass which you use a Bubble to get him away from you.
Overall, this game is good but however I think the game is sort of mediocre because of the game's graphic and difficulty.
Ah spongebob spongebob spongebob, Who doesn't love spongebob? Well I for one have been a really huge spongebob fan back then, and I was actually pretty interested into getting some of the serie's video games, and it appears that this one I am reviewing right here is one of his very first ones! And so you are going to be asking, what game is that I speak of? Well I will tell you right here, this is Spongebob Squarepants the legend of the spatula for the game boy color! Anyways, let's get this review started shall we? Lolz, ok.
Story-6/10
The main plot behind this game is that spongebob is just riding his unicycle one day in the jellyfish fields, and then he goes too fast and accidentally crashes into this big metal statue! This statue is not just any ordinary statue! But anyways, he then goes to tell his boss Mr krabs about it, and so Mr krab tells him the following info, "My my spongebob! If you can recover this legendary golden spatula to me as soon as possible, then you will become my number one fry cook!" Or at least I think that is what he says, so anyways, spongebob follows his directions and thus, He sets out on his quest to recover the spatula!
Gameplay-7/10
Spongebob legend of the lost spatula is for the most part just your typical action adventure side scroller game like all other games on the game boy color at the time, You control the titular character spongebob squarepants you run through big large and vast levels, collecting things and doing certain tasks in order to succeed and become the number one fry cook! The controls are pretty simple to say the least, You use D-pad to move, you press the A button to jump, and you press the B button to attack. Each level has a certain treasure to find and collect, such as magic conch shells, treasure chests, etc. Along the way, spongebob will be confronting all sorts of bad guys, including bubble bass, eels, and well yeah, they are your typical stuff. They aren't that easy to take out, because spongebob can only take 2 or so hits before he is dead, When spongebob is at full health, he will have his pants on, when he is at one hit left, he will be in his underwear, die in this state and you will be sent back to your last checkpoint. All of the funny and wacky characters from the show are here as well! Including Patrick, sandy, Mr krabs, plankton, squidward, and so on! The thing I like about this game is how big each levels are! Each level is big, vast, and all contain alot of stuff to collect! The game isn't all that of a collectathon though, there will be some bosses to spice up the gameplay, and these guys can be pretty hard! So be prepared! One thing the game succeeds in the humor, most of the characters all say tons of funny stuff, like if you talk to ms puff, she tells you "No, you cannot have your license." And if you keep saying it more, she will say it even more! Anyways, that is what I can say for the gameplay, I guess.
Graphics-6/10
This was one of the very last game boy color games released, and for what it is worth, It looks okay to be honest! I mean the game is a game boy color game, so cut it some slack! So anyways, all the worlds and levels you'll be exploring are huge, colorful, and bursting with depth! Now as for the character sprites, they look OK, they are recognizable to say the least, I mean spongebob looks like himself, Patrick looks like himself, Sandy looks like herself, and so on. The HUD is not always present on the screen, but for what it is worth, It is kind of complicated when it comes to getting through menus, but you can get used to it! Oh yeah, this game was released the same time as conker's bad fur day, a game made on a more powerful system!, you better cut it some slack there! Because most people like me still have a thing for the game boy color.
Sound-7/10
First thing when you boot up the game, you are introduced to a nice 8-bit rendition of the class spongebob squarepants theme song we all know and love, and the rendition is pretty darn solid and awesome to say the least! But anyways, for the actual game soundtrack, The game's soundtrack is pretty average to say the least, you get some catchy tunes here and there, but most of it is just repetitive stuff, and not in a bad way! Now for the actual sound effects, they are um...Okay, since this is an 8-bit system, you do get some mostly generic beeps, bloops, booms, and just about everything else, and that is pretty good as well. Some tunes have actually been stuff in my head for a long time to be honest! Such as the downtown theme, or the carnival level, and that is a huge plus.
Addictiveness-7/10
This game is actually somewhat fun to be honest! At first the game may just seem like your typical collectathon like other platformers at the time like Super Mario 64 and Banjo Kazooie, but what the game does right here is that it manages to offer challenge, fun, and charm all together! That is what I think makes the game itself fun, and btw, the game is a spongebob game, so I can't see why you guys should pick on it just because the little yellow sponge is in it!
Depth-7/10
The game offers quite alot of length and depth into it, and here it is, The adventure is about 11 levels long, each with 4 levels, and so because what i said there, the game will most likely take you about 2-3 hours to rush through, and that is enough to me! The game also has lots of treasure to unfold, so be prepared there! I have seen alot of speed runs of this game beaten in about 5-9 minutes, and that is pretty impressive to say the least!
Difficulty-8/10
Here is where the game really boils down though, the difficulty level! For the most part, the game can be pretty easy and simple enough to pick up and play, but in all other parts, the game can really make you pull out your hair! One example for me is the darn tar in the goo lagoon level! And don't forget those crazy clams in the cave section! But if you are a true expert at games like this, then you shouldn't have any problems with legend of the lost spatula.
Overall-6.6/10
In general, I did not hate this game at all! I personally think the game has enough of everything for the target audence to all enjoy it! gave this game a 6.6 because everything that it does right for a licensed game of this genre, It is fun, challenging, charming, and well I am running out of compliments! So anyways, just do yourself a huge favor and buy this average action platform game! Anyways, this has been RedHotToddy and his 108th review, and I am out guys!
