Mortal Review 2 (Corny title)   PixelBrick
Welcome to my review for the famous Mortal Kombat. This'll be a rather interesting review. I mean, it's for an M-rated game. I've actually never done this before. Before I start, if you're willing to check out this game, be warned, there's blood and gore...and a lot of it. We all know how Mortal Kombat became famous. Mortal Kombat became famous for its blood and gore, and most importantly, the fatalities. When Mortal Kombat 1 was released in the early 90's, Sub-Zero's "Spine Rip" move sparked a lot of controversy, as well as Kano's heart rip. Mortal Kombat even spawned the pointless rating system, the ESRB. That's right, we're digging deep into the reason you couldn't play Resident Evil in your childhood. Mortal Kombat was without a doubt the bane of every parent's nightmare. They believed their children would become bullies or criminals, as if ripping someone's head off is physically possible. But now, we're focusing on the sequel that was better in every way, more violent, more gruesome, Mortal Kombat 2. Let's dig in!
Graphics: 9/10
You've probably heard of Mortal Kombat 9, released in 2011. That game had excellent graphics, but this is a different story. Mortal Kombat was released back when video games were family friendly. If this game was released on the Atari or NES, or any other 8-bit system or just had bad graphics in general, that's a different story. But when Mortal Kombat 2 has graphics such as this, it's no wonder parents were biting their nails when they took their children to the arcades. Mortal Kombat utilized digital graphics. Every character is a real person doing the moves. Cool, huh? This makes the characters more realistic. The blood and gore in this game is great, but the blood looks a bit like ketchup. It was 1994, but back then, the blood in this game was like nothing ever witnessed. The gore is actually pretty realistic for Super Nintendo standards. The characters have smooth textures, as well as the stages themselves. The stages had very smooth textures, and everything was distinguishable. This game was ported to many other consoles, some which upgraded the graphics, like the port on the Sega 32X having smoother and brighter graphics. Overall, the Mortal Kombat 2 graphics are amazing, so this is why I'm scoring this category with a nine.
Sound: 8/10
I'm just gonna put it out there that Mortal Kombat 2 and 3 are the two Super Nintendo games with the best sound. Let's start with the music. I honestly couldn't care for the music. It can be difficult to hear, and it isn't exactly up-beat. It's actually kind of dark and uninteresting. However, that's not all. Let's jump to the narration. At the beginning and ends of fights, and occasionally in the middle, you'll hear a voice that's identical to the narrator of every PG-13 and R rated movie trailer. The character who narrates is Shao Kahn, the main villain, and I have to say, it sounds excellent for the Super Nintendo. You can actually hear the voice clearly. Shao Kahn surely does have a very sexy voice indeed. His laughing can catch you by surprise, and the narrating sounds top notch, especially when he says, "Fight!" and "Flawless victory" and "Fatality!". Now let's start with the other voice acting. Occasionally, the face of Dan Forden, one of the Mortal Kombat developers who worked for Midway, will pop up at the bottom right corner. He would say, "Toasty!". When he says it, it actually opened my eyes. First of all, it sounds hilarious, and also the compression sounds amazing, just as good as Shao Kahn's narrating. Next, there's the cries the characters let out when getting beat up. They can be really cheesy, especially the one you here when someone is falling into the Pit, but it still sounds top notch for a Super Nintendo game. All the other sound effects, like the gong and the attacks are on key and match what's going on. A lot of them can be cartoony, which is funny considering how dark this game is. The sound in this game opened my eyes even further than the game itself, and this is the only Super Nintendo game that's made me feel this way about the sound.
Playability: 9/10
Just like a lot of tournament fighters such as Street Fighter, Tekken, Super Smash Brothers, and more, this certainly is an addicting tournament fighter. One thing that makes this one more addicting than others is the smooth movement and the gore and fatalities. It's fun trying new characters and trying out their fatalities. Everything else about this game makes it very addicting, but something about the blood and gore captures a lot of Mortal Kombat fans. If you have a buddy, you can play 2-player mode of which you face each other. Sometimes, it can be addicting knocking them to their doom with spikes, turning them into a baby, ripping body parts off, doing a friendship, burning them, and much much more. People wanna see that stuff. It's surprising to be in a Super Nintendo game, but it's a number one reason of why Mortal Kombat can be very addicting. There's always the factor of the graphics, sound, etc, but the blood and gore seem to attract many people. This tied in with the tournament fighting genre like Street Fighter, can make a really addicting game. Overall, I think Mortal Kombat can be a rather addicting game. It's difficulty, sound, and graphics will lure you in and convince you to keep playing. Mortal Kombat makes a great tournament fighter, but not really a beat-em-up game (Ahem, Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero). Overall, Mortal Kombat 2 is a very illusive game.
Story: 7/10
Mortal Kombat has a very convoluted story, despite it being a beat-em-up game. The story takes place thousands of years ago (Even though Hollywood somehow exists). War has begun in the Earth realm. To settle the war, a bunch of mortals and immortals have one-on-one martial arts fights. A very deceptive way to settle a war, but anyways, the leader of the tournament is Shao Kahn. The goal is to defeat Shang Tsung, the shape-shifting demon, then to face Shao Kahn himself to end the war. What I like about the story is that each character has a back-story. It makes the story more interesting, but I only rated the story a seven because it just ends up as one of those "there's an evil guy, go beat up a bunch of people to reach him" cliche. And one thing that doesn't make sense is that there's a couple of immortal characters in "Mortal Kombat." Kintaro is an immortal tiger/horse beast, and Raiden is a literal god. In fact, he's the god of thunder, yet he somehow sheds blood. Other than that, it's all mortal. You have an actor named Johnny Cage from Hollywood who somehow got involved into an ancient martial arts tournament, a hell-spawn ninja, three female ninjas, two other ninjas, a Chinese martial arts fighter (Of course), I could go on. There's still a lot of things needed to be explained in the plot like how Johnny Cage got involved in the plot and how Sonya, who apparently is a human from another realm, is even a human, who actually wants to defend Earth. Overall, the story is good, but could use a bit of work in my opinion.
Depth: 6/10
Mortal Kombat doesn't offer a ton, because it is one of the first tournament fighters out there, but this game still offers a decent amount. Let's start with the 2-player mode. You can fight your friend, which I would not be able to live without. Mortal Kombat is definitely a more enjoyable experience with a friend. You can fight an unlimited amount of rounds, and it even keeps track of how many fights you've fought. Now, let's cover the hidden characters. There's more of them in later games, and some of them become regular playable characters, but you can fight hidden characters. They will give you hints rarely on how to reach them. There's Smoke, the ninja that spouts smoke from his mask, Noob Saibot, a plain black version of Scorpion (The name referencing the last names of the two main developers of the game. Read them backwards. The two main developers had the two last names of Boon and Tobias), and finally there's Jade, the female ninja in green. It can be tricky to reach these guys. For an example, wanna fight Noob? Play through 50 matches of 2-player mode continuously (25 in Sega Genesis version). Wanna fight Smoke? Do a specific button combination at a specific stage, at a specific time.
Let's move on to the playable characters. Mortal Kombat 2 offers more characters than its predecessor. The playable characters are Liu Kang the Chinese martial arts fighter, Kung Lao the magician/bounty hunter, Johnny Cage the actor, Reptile the human/reptile ninja, Sub-Zero the ice ninja, Shang Tsung the shape-shifting demon, Kitana the female ninja, Jax the...fighter, Mileena the Kitana rip-off, Baraka the swamp monster, and Raiden the god of thunder. Every character has their own unique moves. It's fun to experiment with all the characters too. The hidden three can also be played as if defeated. Next, there is the famous fatalities. When one of the fighters is defeated twice (one fight is two rounds like Street Fighter), the fighter gets dizzy. Shao Kahn says, "FINISH HIM/HER." The other fighter must finish the dizzy one off. You can be lame and punch him or her or something or you can do a fatality. To do a specific fatality, you need to do a specific button combination. Special moves have their own button combinations too, but fatalities only work at those "FINISH HIM/HER" moments. Every character has their own unique fatalities. There are also stage fatalities, which work on specific stages. Maybe it's knocking the opponent into spikes. There is a LOT of fatalities in this game, and the number of total fatalities in the franchise is incomprehensible. Something new that mortal Kombat 2 added are Friendships and Babalities. They're just like fatalities; finishing moves, but different. These were added as a joke of how much violence there is in Mortal Kombat. When a Babality is done, the victim turns into a baby. With Friendships, the one doing the Friendship does something that would be a sign of friendship. Shang Tsung makes a rainbow with his hands, Baraka gives the victim a present, Johnny Cage signs an autograph, Scorpion offers a Scorpion doll, etc. A lot of the friendships can be very embarrassing, and they embarrass you more than you embarrass the opponent, but some of the Friendships are actually well thought out.
In this game, you must fight everybody. You win, you move on to the next opponent at the next stage. There's only three stages of which the stage fatalities can be used, which is a real disappointment, really, because the stage fatalities are actually pretty good. In between, there can be rare hidden mini-games. In fact, in Mortal Kombat 1, you can play...get ready for this...Pong. No crap. The mini-games are a nice edition. They're not as useless as the mini-games in Final Fantasy VII, but they're actually fun and provide entertainment. What's sad is that they're so rare. I'd be surprised if you could unlock one. A few bonuses in this game are the ability to control whether there's blood in the game or not. Think of it was parental controls...that any child could easily undo. You also can change the controls, as if the control configuration in the Retro Game Room wasn't enough for you. You can also edit the CPU difficulty and the sound setting. A lot of the options are pointless really, but it's...something that's there, right? If you beat the game, you can actually play as the bosses like Shao Kahn, Kintaro, and even Goro. However, if you play as one of these characters, there's no way you can possibly lose, so it's a game breaker.
There's not really much more to explain about this game. I think I've covered all there is to know about the depth of the game. This game does offer a decent amount for an early tournament fighter, and that's an advantage to a lot of other fighting games from the time this game was made.
Difficulty: 6/10
This game is honestly not that difficult for many reasons. Let's start with the fact that there's a lot of moves in this game you can just spam the hell out of. There's also the option to edit the difficulty of the CPU's, so all of these things make this game kinda easy. However, if you play this game legitimately, it can actually be pretty tough. As you progress, the CPU's get stronger. You may think you can just spam your favorite moves, but there's a point where they can dodge those moves. The end of the game is definitely where the game gets difficult. If you want an easy fighting game, I'd recommend something else like Street Fighter. If you play this game right, it can be pretty easy. It's hard to do a perfect run of this game without cheating or spamming a move a few times, or using a cheat code. But I wouldn't say this game is too difficult like I Wanna Be The Guy or trying to play Street Fighter Alpha 3 without doing a Hadouken. Mortal Kombat 2 is actually the easiest of the Super Nintendo trilogy, but don't let your guard down, there's still challenge to come in this game.
Overall: 8.9/10
Being fair, Mortal Kombat 2 is one of my favorite fighting games ever. Everything about this game seems to be just great. The blood, violence, graphics, sound, character,s I don't know why, but Mortal Kombat is the only fighting game other than Super Smash Brothers that made me feel this way. Mortal Kombat 2 seems to have that spark of a genius. I highly recommend you at least try this game, even though you've most likely not even read this review. But this game is a pure classic. The only thing I hate about this game is how the characters can be unoriginal. Seven ninjas, four identical female ninjas, four cops, a Bruce Lee rip-off, three identical cyborgs, and an Asian Thor (Raiden). But this game has certainly made my list of favorite video games.

Mortal Kombat 2 - double the kombat double the fun!   geeogree
Mortal Kombat 2 is a superior game in so many ways to the original Mortal Kombat. Made 2 years after the original this game took everything the original did right and made it so much better. This game takes place after the events of the original game except instead of the tournament taking place on Earth it takes place in Outworld which is a place where Shao Kahn rules. He’s basically the boss of Shang Tsung if I recall correctly. Either way it is now Shao Kahn who is directly trying to take over Earth via Mortal Kombat.
Graphics 8/10 – wow does this game look so much better than the original. It’s hard to believe the game is even associated considering the drastic improvement in graphics. Still not quite on the level of the third game it is such an improvement that I honestly prefer this game to the original because of the graphics alone not to mention the other reasons I’ll cover later.
The sprites themselves are so much better this time around. The sprites were created by recording real people doing the moves you see and then making them digital in the game. Much better than drawing the characters into the game using any kind of software. That’s a big part of the reason why the sprites look so much better. This game has 12 characters instead of 7 this time and while this game does have a few repeats in design (Mileena + Kitana or Reptile, Scorpion and Sub Zero) the repeats do make sense based on the characters themselves. At least they have that going for them. The other change to the sprites that you’ll notice compared to the first game is that these ones bleed! While the blood looks terrible and the “bones” from fatalities are horribly done it at least tries to be more realistic as a fighting game that involves killing your opponent.
The other improvement is the level design. While the original was good Mortal Kombat 2 is great. The trees with the faces that make noises are awesome! I also like the lightning that moves around in the portal level. And each level fits the overall theme of the game. This is a dimension ruled by a crazy tyrant and the world shows it. He has a grand palace that looks great but outside of that everything is destitute and scary. It does so much for the feel of the game to see all the different level designs. Another improvement graphically (and gameplay wise) are the extra level fatalities available. Instead of just the pit there are at least 2 other level fatalities (maybe more I can’t remember them all) that you can use to finish off your opponent. Each one is fairly unique and looks awesome.
Sound 9/10 – the music in Mortal Kombat is good but Mortal Kombat 2 takes the entire mood and feel of the music to the next level. The environment that the game takes place is even darker and the music matches that feel perfectly. The darker the level the darker the music accompanying it.
I also feel like the sound effects were improved. The original game had very obvious but limited sound. This game expanded those sounds so that the moves didn’t all sound exactly the same all the time. Also, with more female characters in the game the female character sounds seemed more fleshed out than they were in the original game.
One other sound effect that I noticed and LOVED were the trees in the forest. The moaning that they do add such a good ambiance to that level that otherwise would be missing. It’s not a huge item to make note of but sometimes it is attention to small details like this that make more of an impact after the other stuff is taken care of. There weren’t huge improvements to be made but the improvements that were made were good.
Addictiveness 9/10 – This game was great to play. I remember playing it for hours as a kid growing up. Having 12 playable characters this time around instead of 7 was a great bonus. And it wasn’t only 5 new playable characters but actually 7 because Sonya and Kano were excluded this time around in favor of Reptile and Mileena as being playable. Also, each character has a unique ending story to the game so learning all of those stories requires beating the game with each character.
There is a versus mode in this game as well which is similar to any other. The main improvement is the extra characters to play with resulting in more variety in match-ups.
Story 7/10 – This story is a continuation of the story from the first game. The Earth realm won the tournament from the first game meaning it is safe. However, it sounds like there is a rule that allows the invading force to start another tournament outside of the realm in order to try and take it over and that it can’t be refused. This allows Shao Kahn to start another tournament also immediately after the first one ends without having to wait 100 years.
Again, the story is nearly the same as the last one but include along with it the backgrounds and lore surrounding each playable character and it adds a lot more to the story. Also, each character has a different story related to their victory in the tournament which keeps the overall story more interesting because it reveals their motivations for participating.
Depth 7/10 – there was a lot more depth to this game than the previous one. Not only are there more characters in the game but the characters have more moves and more variety in moves than the previous game. Also there is an introduction of more fatalities as well as friendships, babalities and more stage specific fatalities which keep the overall gameplay more interesting and enjoyable. Also, the story itself has more depth and variety to it which also helps the overall game to have more depth. The gameplay itself is no deeper than most other fighting games of this style. It’s the other stuff that helps this game be more interesting to play.
Difficulty 7/10 – the difficulty versus the original game definitely went up but not so much that the game remained unplayable. There are a few extremely cheap moves (the leg sweep can be done over and over by certain characters until the opponent dies) but ignoring those the game is fairly challenging. There is a strange element in this game where the first opponent, and any first opponent after a continue, is quite a bit easier than any opponents after that. They do fewer special moves and tend to be less aggressive. It’s a noticeable trend in Mortal Kombat fighting games after this one. There are also difficulty options which do allow some variety in the difficulty but even on very easy you still need to be a proficient player in order to beat the entire game.
Overall 7.8/10 – this game was a significant improvement over its prequel and is better than nearly every other game of the same era. The only game that is even in its league is Street Fighter 2 (whichever one has 12 fighters instead of 8). Every other fighting game I have played pales in comparison to these 2 games. They were imitated plenty of times but no one could replicate what made this game, and the others in the Mortal Kombat franchise, so much fun to play.

genius, classic,influential, flawed ;)   bsnowotter
Mortal Kombat is genius, and the second Mortal Kombat on the Super Nintendo is a particularly good entry in the series. The genius of the game is that it takes extreme violence and packages it in an entertaining bundle.  in so doing it pushes the limits of mainstream video game entertainment and the influence of this groundbreaking title can be felt to this day, perhaps a link can be made to the Grand Theft Auto series, although I'm going out on a limb on that whenwhen I am unsure weather this one came out before or after grand theft auto. But I digress, without further ado dot dot dot
graphics 9. The graphics in Mortal Kombat or one of its strongest traits. Based on real live actors, all the contestants in this tournament of blood are animated beautifully they look realistic and they behave realistic. Similarly the backgrounds are colorful.the fatalities are large and amazing and in some cases involve dragons that are animated well take up the whole screen and bite people in half.
sounds 10. The sound in Mortal Kombat is amazing primarily because there are tons of quality voice acting tidbits scattered throughout the game as each character vocalizes their aggressive and violent moves in such a way that you believe they are real live killing people. The soundtrack and sound effects are also top notch and the special effects deserve credit for adding gruesome realism to all the proceedings.
addiction 8. Mortal Kombat 2 is quite addictive. Let's leave it as a given that it has a two player mode widget invite friends to duke it out like all quality fighting games should. The special moves list is extensive, requiring lots of referencing that's cheap sheets or instruction magazines or whatever you young people use too quicklyfamiliar rise yourself of a game such as this one. The only problem with the games addictiveness is a more fundamental problem with its game designed specifically in comparison to its peers most notably the best fighting game ever Street Fighter series. But I will get into that more in a section other than addictive.
story 9. The store in Mortal Kombat is quite good. True to the fighting games genre, all the characters have a good back stories and reasons for fighting, but I feel the Mortal Kombat series goes above and beyond in terms of giving each character a more detailed story then you would expect. I won't give it to 10 however because the story of each character is presented in a minimalistic way. I would prefer to see some sort of graphical, perhaps a graphic novel presentation, but instead we just have to read about what each character has in terms of motivation and back story.
depth 7. The death section is as good a section has any to make some necessary disclosures about this review. I am A Street Fighter devoted fan and I believe Street Fighters the best fighting game franchise ever. In fact I have gotten angry when people dare to say that Mortal Kombat was in the same league as Street Fighter.  that having been said, enough distance has been established between myself and this ancient feud that I can see Mortal Kombat for the genius that it did offer. It cannot compete with Street Fighter 2 in terms of the complexity of giving each character a unique set of normal moves and unique play style.  Street Fighter did something even more amazing for gameplay and the history of video games generally then Mortal Kombat. That having been said, Mortal Kombat was never made to compete in this sphere.  Mortal Kombat shines in terms ofin terms of presentation, massively impressive graphics and sounds, and using this presentation to boldly presents the most hilariously over the top and violent video games ever to prove the points that people who whine about violent video games are idiots because its a heck of a lot of fun to tear your opponent in half.
difficulty 8. The difficulty of Mortal Kombat reminds me of a speech from Master Splinter. This is my favorite ninja turtle quotes not counting Raphael's quotes when he tells the Ninja Turtles enemy The Foot Clan while he is fighting an army of their ninjas one on army, that quote they must be studying the abridged book of ninja fighting and quotes. This speech in question is when Rafael storms out and is out all night because he is angry and when he gets back master Splinter's waiting up for him. Master Splinter Cell come sit by me NFL says couldn't this wait till morning and Master Splinter Cell is you will listen now! He continues my master Yoshi's first row was possessed to rate thinking then and only then can one who's ass the gift of strength knowledge in peace. I have tried to channel your anger FAL but more remains anger clouds the mind turned inward it is an uncomfortable enemy. You are unique among your brothers for you choose to face this Anna me alone. But as you face it do not forget them and do not forget me. I am here my son. So as you can tell, the challenge of this game can make you angry, but your friends and family are still there for you. Until they're not... At one point master Splinter's taken hostage and they must meditate to contact him and he says I am proud of you. Tonight you learn the final and greatest truth of the ninja, that ultimate mastery lies not in the body, but of the mind. Together there's nothing you're for mines cannot accomplish. Help each other drop on one another and always remember the true force that binds you the same as that which brought me here tonight, that which I gladly return with my final words, I love you all my sons. The other funny quote from that movie is win, at the end when Master Splinter Cell jess I have always liked cowabunga, and they alter Calabanga, he says I made a funny hahahahaha!if you read all of this, you will not find Mortal Kombat 2 unduly difficult, because you are a patient smart person, and not the person who would complain that my difficulty section is slightly irrelevant. :)
I would definitely recommend checking this title out if you haven't already, though it may be best enjoyed using netplay.  Bon appetite.

Graphics The Visuals and sprites everything is stunning  and is on par with the arcade original
Sound there are less voices samples but enough for the game to be enjoyable  once again the soundtrack is very well done i even  like better than the arcade original
Addictiveness     although everything in this port is not exactly perfect it still very fun to play even to this day  unlike the genesis port  by probe
Story  its there its got a well evil theme to it but the intro screenshots are missing and  nobody likes plain text however it did keep the endings
Depth the game offers a boatload of cheats and eastereggs    as well as the hidden character so it offers much more than the arcade original
making the snes port  a bit more enjoyable
Difficulty Scupltured Software didnt exactly make the controls laggy unlike the first mortal kombat   its slighty more harder than the arcade original   but still very enjoyable
overall this is a fantastic port and i highly recommend it to anyone who has a snes or a die heart mortal kombat fan

Mortal Kombat 2 Review   Marcmoney
Overall - 9.3
Mortal Kombat 2 is a fun game.  More characters, a little bit more people to verse, and be able to verse Kintaro, who I like to call a cheater and a show off.
Graphics - 9
The graphics are excellent.  I enjoy playing with this kind of graphics. :)
Sound - 10
The sound is good, same as the first game, but it sure has a little bit better sound effects on the fighters.
Addictiveness - 8
I would play this again, it has more characters and it sure has some great levels to fight at too.  Yes, more levels to fight in. :P
Story - N/A
There is no story in this game.  Even though I said that there was a story in the first game, it's because it was from the movie.  This one is just a game for players to enjoy.
Depth - 6
The game is not that huge, pretty much the same as the first Mortal Kombat.  Maybe a little bit more battles, but that's probably just it.
Difficulty - 6
The game is quite hard.  I used my strategy (duck, low-kick every time) and I got to Kintaro.  He is very hard to beat. :S
Wrap Things Up...
Mortal Kombat 2 is awesome!! I love using the new characters and playing in the new stages.  I highly recommend getting this game, it sure beats the heck out of boredom. :)

The Mortal Kombat 2 Review   mgharper94
Hello everyone to another review, this time I'm reviewing an arcade classic but there have been other versions released to home consoles prior to relate to the arcade version but which one is the best? Well, let's find out.
GRAPHICS: The graphics in the game has an accurate detail on the characters and backgrounds but it looks painted on the characters if you think about it.
SOUND: The sounds in this version may be missing some sound effects but does have most of the sounds you remember from the arcade version which is a good thing.
ADDICTIVENESS: I gave the addictiveness in the game a 7 because it doesn't really have anything to change in the game to make you come back to it again and again, only the change in character lineup on who you're facing.
STORY: Well, there isn't really a story to come by...unless fighting up your way up the ladder to fight and beat shao khan to save earthrealm counts as one.
DEPTH: This game doesn't have that much to offer except some hidden stuff like hidden characters to fight.
Difficulty: If anything, I'd say this is one of the hardest Mortal Kombat games to beat but it's not impossible. One of these days I'll find a way to beat the game without having to use cheats.
FINAL OPINION: overall, I'd say that this is a great version of the game if you want something to save you quarters rather than going to the arcade to try to beat the game or beat your friends.

The MD version of this game is much better than the SNES version.

I agree with Durell89, but in a different way. I love playing sports games, but I usually get pummeled.

As much as I love Arcade Fighting games. I was never really any good with them. That goes double for Street Fighter.
