Back in the day (I think I was 5 or something), before I really thought about limitations, I really like hot wheels stunt track challenge for the gba so my mom got me another hot wheels game. It looked like fun.
Ok, on to the actual review.
the first thing I noticed when playing it was the fact it was from a top-down perspective, as opposed to behind your car like I was used to (see
The Simpson's Road Rage and Hot Wheels: Stunt Track Challenge). When the race started, though I kept running into things over and over. The screen was too zoomed in. Eventually, when I got familiar with the controls, there was an old lady crossing the street. There were obstacles. This would be ok except for the fact that all of the obstacles are either timing or luck based. And if you hit one, it respawns you back before the obstacle. With the flamethrowers, this means that you will sometimes take 15 seconds just on that part. And there are two of them, so if you get hit by either, you are going back before them both. There are also jumps, which means you have to be going fast or you will fall in. Sometimes, the jumps are so close together that if you are going too fast, you will go over the next ramp in fall in the pit anyway. At least with the jumps you have the courtesy to respawn you after the jump, but if there are two right next to each other you are spawned in between them and the only way to proceed to fall in the pit of the next jump, wasting at least 5 seconds. Sometimes the road crumbles, witch means you have to cross it before the animation ends, but you barely have enough time so if you are behind a car, and it goes over one, there is no way for you to cross it too. You need to wait until it respawns. And to top it all off, you need to get first place.
there is also a weird boost system. Basically there are two types of boosts; one that makes you go faster, and one that makes you go slower. Each of them has their own boost bar that refills over time it takes about 5 seconds to go from empty to full. Don't get me wrong, the B button is still for brakes, but there is another set of breaks that is softer and can run out. There is also no music.
there are also multiple modes to choose from: GP, elimination, some scavenger hunt thing, and a mission mode. Elimination is what you would expect, there is a timer, when it runs out, the person in last place is eliminated. Keep going until there is only one left. Nothing special. I don't remember what the scavenger hunt one is called, but basically there are tires around the track, and you have to collect them all before time runs out. Only one appears at a time, and they don't appear in order. There is also no map, so all you have to guide you is an arrow. Sometimes you might need to go backwards to get it in time, but some stages have one way jumps, and due to there just being an arrow its hard to tell when you should turn around. And there are 16 tires. I don't really understand the mission mode, but I don't think I ever got past the first  level.
tl;dr It's not very good.
