Hang On and Safari Hunt (Sega Master System) review   G@mehe@d
Never have I seen such a great combination of games. Hang On and Safari Hunt, was a great combo cart released with every Sega Master System when it came out in america. Not only was having 2 games in one cartridge a great value, but it turns out both games are winners. I'll review each game by giving it a different score. With Hang On being the first score, and safari hunt being the next one. Enjoy the review :D
Gameplay B+/A: Hang On's gameplay is a bit flawed but still fun and enjoyable, while Safari Hunt is shooting action at its finest. Hang On was once an arcade game that used Sega's amazing super scaler technology. Its port to the Master System is a bit bumpy. With extremely scaled down graphics and such. The gameplay is quite good, your goal is to make it to each checkpoint before time runs out. There is a bit of variety which is good. The control is fluid and is easy to pick up and play. However I don't like how easy it is to shift gears and I also don't like how your bike explodes after touching an opponent. Still its quite fun and enjoyable. Safari Hunt is a light gun game. Its like Duck Hunt, only a lot better. In Duck Hunt there was little in the way of variety, and the difficulty did not rise very quickly making the game get boring real quick. Safari Hunt, fixes those flaws. There are 3 unique stages with different targets to shoot, and different point bonuses. You need to score a certain amount of points to qualify for the next round. The difficulty rises quickly, giving the game an arcade kind of feel. Each animal moves at a different pattern making for some fun and unpredictable action. Both games provide a quick burst of fun and enjoyment, that will put a smile to your face. :D
Graphics C+/B Hang On's graphics are okay, but they could be better. While the scaling is quite good, and the simple environments are easy on the eyes. I think there could have been a lot more detail. Your biker is colored awkwardly and the track backgrounds lack character. I do like how there is little to no flicker. Safari Hunt isn't a graphical marvel either, but it does have some detailed environments. Sure the graphics have a cartoon look, but the graphics are still detailed and good looking. Each target is uniquely colored, making the game appealing to the eye. It shows just how great Master System games can look.
Sound C/D+: Both games have average sound that really is mediocre. Hang On has some good sound effects and a great start up theme, but the lack of in game music is glaring. Safari Hunt has few sound effects and lame jingles that happen during your status screen.
Addictiveness A-/B+: Both games are simple, yet addicting. Hang On has plenty of different locations to keep you interested, and the twisting winding tracks will keep you hooked. Add in well rising difficulty and simple controls and you got yourself an addicting game. Safari Hunt, doesn't have nearly as much variety, but it makes up for it by being simple, and fast. The difficulty rises quickly making this game quite fun and addicting. Overall though I think Hang On has the edge.
Depth B+/C: Hang On has a lot of different locations you race through that keeps the game interesting. Safari Hunt, has only three areas with two looking similar. Also the enemies don't change all the much. There is a variety of them though.

Hang on and Safari Hunt   GenesisJunkie
Hang on and Safari Hunt was the U.S. lauch title for the Sega Master System in June 1986. Hang on and Safari Hunt is a compilation cart which means that it has mutable games on one cart, in this case it is two games.
                                                                                                        Hang On
(Overall) Hang On was originally an arcade game realest by Sega in 1985. The arcade version was the first arcade game to use 16 bit graphics. Hang On has been ported to several different video game consoles and home computers. This is a very good game to introduce yourself to the Sega Master System and can stand toe to toe with any racing game on the more popular Nintendo Entertainment System. In this game you have to shift gears to speed up or slow down.

(Graphics) This game has beautiful 8 bit graphics! Take a look at Rad Racer on the NES and Hang On and you will see what I mean. Each check point looks different staring with the first part, which is just a very generic green grass and black and white road, when you get to the second check point the grass starts turning into a desert, after you get past the desert you find yourself in the big city at night, which is like eye candy, after that is the last stretch of the game, another desert, but it looks very different from the previous desert. Over all the graphics are just plan awesome and very nice to look at.

(Sound) When you are on the start menu you get a good little song but after that I don't think there is any music. The sound of the motorcycle is as realistic as it could be for an 8 bit game. There's really not much to say about this game as fare as music goes.

(Addictiveness) This isn't the game I play the most when I pop in this cart. The game is pretty fun but not one I play over and over. If you like to race this is the perfect classic for you and you will probably play it a lot.

(Story) If there is a story I don't know what it is. I do not have the instruction manual for this game so I may just not know the story, but it isn't apparent in the game so I'm just going with no story.

(Depth) This is not a long game, there are only four check points so if you are good at racing games it should be a breeze. If you stink at racing games like I do you may never beat the game.

(Difficulty) Hang On isn't to hard if you are good at games like this. You have a time limit to get to each check point. You better not run into any other motorcycles or run off the track because you will crash! This game is not unbeatable by any means.

   Safari Hunt
(Overall) Safari Hunt is a light gun game and a very good one at that. Dust off you Master System Light Phaser and get ready for an exotic hunting trip! Safari Hunt was Sega's answer to Nintendo's Duck Hunt and let me tell you, they got the right answer. Safari hunt is so much better than Duck Hunt its not even funny. To go to the next level you have to shoot enough animals to get the point requirements which go up each level. You have a lot of bullets and no dumb dog to laugh at you if you miss so lets get cocked and loaded and shoot some stuff!

(Graphics) I hate to keep bringing up Duck Hunt but really compare them, go ahead ill wait on you........... Now that you have seen both games you can clearly see that Safari Hunt is fare superior. Each level looks different with different animals to kill. There is only three levels that cycle over and over. The first level is a lovely pond, with ducks and bunnies and fish that you just blow away, so relaxing, the next level is a heavily wooded area with birds, armadillos,  and bears, the third and last is creepy wooded area with spiders, bats, and black cats. Over all the graphics are clean and colorful.

(Sound) All I really have to say about the music is WOW! Awesome music, very catchy. So turn the volume up and lets jam to some Safari Hunt!

(Addictiveness) On this cart this is the game I play the most. I keep trying to beat my high score or play with friends to see who can get the highest score. This is a very fun light gun game! This is one I think you will want to play pretty often.

(Story) Yet again I don't have the manual so if there is a story I don't know it. For me a game like this don't need a story, you just shoot man!

(Depth) There is only three levels but if I'm not mistaken the three levels cycle over and over so its pretty much endless. This game could use more levels put I can look over it because it is a fun game.

(Difficulty) This game is as hard or as easy as you want it to be. Its a light gun game, if you want it to be more challenging stand back from your TV, if you want it to be like nothing put the gun up against the TV. You have to kill enough animals to reach the point requirements to keep playing, also the longer you play the faster your targets move.

Hang-on and Safari Hunt   classgame
So, this is going to be a rather different review, this cartridge contains two games (which is what I imagined would have come with the SMS console or light phaser control as it was called, but then again I'm not old enough to remember when this console was launched (hell I'm pretty sure it came out 4 years before I was born) so I don't know if the light phase came with it, maybe later versions did but I'm not sure) I mean why not I'm sure all the NES consoles came with Super Mario Bros and Duck Hunt
So a few years back I was able to play the light phaser games online just by clicking in there.
The idea of Hang on is.....you hang on for dear life on that motorbike you race to get to the next checkpoint. In Safari Hunt you shoot as many animals as you can to collect enough points so you can move on to the next round.
Soundtrack: There actually is no soundtrack except for the sound of the bike, unless you count the title screen where it actually sounds pretty good, Safari Hunt on the other hand has kind of grating music in the title screen, like something like the drum button on a synth keyboard. There is also no soundtrack of the gameplay except the sound of the gunshots which sound very strange.
Addictive: Hang-on does keep me coming back, Safari hunt I wish I could come back.
Depth: There are about 8 courses in Hang-on and 21 rounds in Safari Hunt. And every time you start a new course in the game you are back at the first race area you started at.
Difficulty: Depends on which game you are playing. Hang on is easy but I wasn't able to get the hang of using the phaser until the consoles end of it's life as it were, I basically had pointed the gun right at the screen in order for something to work.
Overall: Okay I'm going to level with you all I had to watch gameplay of safari hunt because the games where a light phaser is needed aren't playable on emulators. And as for Hang-on it's very hard for me to hate a racing game.
um.....I'm giving it an 8.5 and this does not count as my 3, I'm doing this by cartridge.

I have fond memories of playing this game, too bad I can't play Safari Hunt, it seems that playing the light phaser games aren't possible on emulators
