One of the first instance of when you got to play the bad guy.   Azul Fria
OVERVIEW

You ever wonder where Nintendo got its idea to name its future mascot, Mario? At the time of the game's release he was known as Jumpman and during the production of the game, Nintendo's landlord named Mario Segale busted in demanding rent. They managed to calm him down and promised to pay him. Donkey Kong turned out to be a huge success and all's well that ended well. In Donkey Kong, the titular character is actually the anti-villain of the game who was tired of Jumpman's abuse at the circus where they worked. For revenge, he kidnaps Jumpman's girlfriend, Pauline and takes her to the top of the building where he awaits Jumpman who is the anti-hero you play as. You go through four unique levels in a unique pattern.

GRAPHICS - A

During it's time, the graphics were excellent mainly in part that arcade units had more freedom with their color palette and size than the home console counterparts which are stuck with limitations and have to cut back on colors. Some ports are downright utter trash like the 2600 version and some other early 8-bit consoles have Donkey Kong looking like the gingerbread man. Now, let's get to Jumpman aka Mario. His iconic unique feature is his mustache. Most people do not know that the reason behind the mustache was to separate his nose from his mouth and everything worked out for him from there. The enemies and other sprites were also well polished so everything you saw was clear as day. As an added bonus, the scene were Donkey Kong carries Pauline up the ladder was one of the earliest known sightings of a panty shot in-game.

CONTROLS - B

There were times where the control scheme worked against you because you made a mistake on what you were trying to do and it was too late to correct it. Some people were in a hurry to start moving after climbing a ladder that they did not even bother to wait till he was all the way to the top of it before trying to move and got stuck there for their deaths. Other times, players were not watching where they were going and ended up dying a stupid death but I'll cover more of that during the gameplay section. For the most part, the controls did what they were meant to do without any confusion.

GAMEPLAY - B+

The game operates in a unique fashion compared to most of its home counterparts and the sequel Donkey Kong Jr. would follow in its formula in same fashion. Some ports didn't even include all levels. There are four unique levels: scaffolding, jungle, cement factory, building (where you face off with Donkey Kong himself). Instead of playing all four straight in one shot, you would go to the scaffolding then to the building and beat the game, then the game got tougher with barrels behaving smarter. Then another level was added in between the two and it went on like this until all four levels were into play. The cement factory was cut out of most ports altogether. The game would keep repeating until all lives were lost and if you were a true pro, you would reach the kill screen.

REPLAYABILITY - A+

Donkey Kong is great for competitive gaming as you can compete with others to see who was better. If you have seen the movie, Pixels, then I will tell you that they were spot on about how game tournaments were in the early days of arcades. Too bad, mom and dad were not old enough to enjoy those times themselves as they are not much older than I am.

OVERALL - B

Donkey Kong would make a return in future game albeit sparingly and never as the good guy until the release of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze where he goes by the name Cranky Kong. Aside from the Gameboy release and the Donkey Kong Country series, his only other original appearances were Donkey Kong Jr. where his son tries to rescue him and Donkey Kong 3 where he is finally considered a villain and tries to take over a greenhouse and it's up to Stanley to blow him away by shooting pesticide up his anal cavity. The modern day Donkey Kong is his grandson or son depending on the story. Donkey Kong for the Arcade was the epitome of Nintendo's rise to fame overseas and introduced us to a future video game icon as well. Now it's a on like a Donkey Kong, Momma Mia!

It's on like Donkey Kong!   GamerPony2013
Donkey Kong was a platform arcade game made in 1981 by Nintendo. In the game you control a carpenter, Jumpman, who must save Pauline from Donkey Kong, Jumpman's pet circus gorilla, by climbing up unfinished buildings made of girders. Upon starting, we see Donkey Kong climbing up a ladder on 6 stories of girders. When he gets to the top, Donkey Kong stomps his way to the left of the screen, causing the girders to get bent. The game begins.
Pushing right on the joystick moves Jumpman to the right, pushing left on the joystick moves Jumpman left, pushing up will make Jumpman climb up a ladder (although, some ladders are broken. So, you cannot climb them.) and pushing down makes him climb down ladders. Pushing the fire button will make Jumpman jump.
The first level is a 6 story set of red girders. You must climb to the top while avoiding the barrels Donkey Kong tosses from the top left. In order to dodge the barrels, you must either jump over them, be somewhere on a ladder and have a barrel pass over/under you, or use a hammer. When you grab the hammer (by jumping into it), you can use it to break barrels. However, you cannot jump or climb ladders. Also, if you get stuck in that one frame where Jumpman has the hammer up in the air and a barrel hits you, you lose a life. Same if the barrel hits you behind.
Donkey Kong will also throw blue barrels that fall towards an oil barrel where Jumpman started. When the blue barrel makes it there, a fireball will come out and chase Jumpman by climbing up the ladders. The fireball's A.I. is pretty weak, as well as he is slow. So, he should not be much of a threat on the first board. He can be jumped over or defeated with the hammer as well.
Once you get to the top, Donkey Kong will carry Pauline up to the next level. Level 2 is a Pie Factory. It consists of shifting conveyor belts and large pies that will kill Jumpman. These pies can be jumped over or destroyed with a hammer. In this stage, Donkey Kong does not throw any barrels, all he does is ride the conveyor belt on the top. There is an oil barrel in the middle that spawns a fireball and due to the platform placement, this guy could be a bit of a pain. The last 2 ladders that lead to the end (top) of the level will get taller and shorter. You can only climb them when they are tall enough. But be careful! If you touch Donkey Kong, you lose a life.
In the 3rd stage, there are several platforms to the right of the screen, and 2 elevators to the left (where you start). In this level, Donkey Kong will throw springs. You also must be careful. As you have a great chance of falling. Falling too high kills Jumpman. After the first elevator, there are 2 platforms with 2 ladders connecting them with a fireball on them. Then is the next elevator and then some zig-zag platforms where the springs fall in between, which kill you as well. When you get to the top, you have to let the spring arch over Jumpman and then swiftly climb the ladder to Pauline. Off to the final stage.
The final stage has 5 stories of blue girders with 2 yellow supporters on each side of the girders. You must run or jump over them to remove them. To complicate matters, several fire foxes will chase after you. They are a bit smarter and faster than the normal fireballs. They can be jumped over and defeated with a hammer. Also, if you try walking over a hole where you removed a supporter, you will fall. So, you must jump over it. After removing all 8 supporters, the game ends and you are sent back to the start where the difficulty increases.
Graphics: 9
The graphics are pretty nice. The girders feature some good shading. The choice of red, yellow, and white for the fireballs work well. Donkey Kong looks like how a gorilla should: Large, hairy, and a tad scary. He also has some nice animations for beating his chest and throwing barrels. And makes some funny facial expressions. Jumpman has smooth walking and climbing animations, as well as an interesting death animation (he spins around then falls on his back with a Halo floating above his face.). Pauline has a nicely detailed dress and hair.
Sound: 6
The sound is alright for a game made in 1981. Although there is a very simple and repetitive tune playing in the background of each level (beside level 3), you will mostly be hearing the squeaky sounds Jumpman makes whenever he walks and the "boing" when he jumps. There is also a pretty good sound when Donkey Kong beats his chest, resembling a large drum sound.
Addictiveness: 8
This game is quite addictive. The platforming is done at a fair pace, and gets faster as the game goes on. The difficulty makes it all the more fun and each level has an interesting gimmick to it to keep it from getting repetitive.
Story: 4
The story is pretty simple. As I explained before: Pauline is kidnapped by Jumpman's pet, Donkey Kong. But it is pretty interesting how Donkey Kong is Jumpman's pet.
Depth: 4
Not very much depth in this game. Just running, jumping over things, climbing things, that is truly all there is to say.
Difficulty: 7
This game is quite hard due to the fact you cant control your jumps in mid-air, the fact you can barely fall far to die, and the overall level design makes it difficult to menuver around. And later on in the game, Donkey Kong throws barrels relentlessly in the first level.
Overall:
Overall, this is a great yet simple platform game. It was the first apperence of Mario (Jumpman) and still remains a classic to this day. It was such a popular game, it was ported to numerous consoles (which I may review if this review gets positive reactions) such as the NES, A2600, Intel., ect. I highly recommend it.

Donkey kong of the middle ages   SuperCrash64
This might be one of my biggest reviews ever enjoy
Introduction  Also the plot of the game. Shows Donkey Kong Dk for short stealing  a girl which i believe thats supposed to be called Pauline which i think she might be a precusor to Princess Peach later on in the Mario Brothers series. The original Character is actually named jump man which is most likey to be the later Renamed Mario . So Basically its  very similar to The Bowser Plots . Later On In the Mario Brothers series. The Gameplay its self would most likey to be redone In mario bros considering mario brothers was an Younger game than this one . .  For some that may not Know this was one of the release Titles for nintendo To get a head start in the North America gaming market. Donkey kong was most likey . based off of the original King kong. Jump man later renamed mario. and Donkey kong becamed one of The most popular and favorite game Characters of all time.
Graphics Well this Was a 1981  Game Considering this was a early game it was pretty Advanced for the Time in contrast to one of the eariler platformers. This game Introduced jumping over objects instead of rather moving the Joystick to avoid objects in the eariler games. These Graphics are Pretty Good the colors are nice and vibirant  the game would Have four levels or ms as the game calls it. The levels are called 25 m  50m 75m and at last 100m . This was an early game arcades could not really have that much Colors like of today.  These graphics again are very impressive for the time being  everything seems to be really sharp natural and fresh, With that Being Said Comparing it to something like the Super nintendo or nes would not really be Fair Considering this game was older than bother gaming systems.Graphics gets a 10
Sound again its very impressive for the Time it was released . The Sound chip is very similar to The soundchip that was in the nes console. Because  ive played both the arcade verison and the nes version of donkey kong . the nes version was very close sounding to the original Arcade Cabinet.   Soundtrack is good for the time being as well it had 3 themes 2 intros and one song that would play for all levels.
it was a very nice sound game .although jump man walk sounded very squeaky its still pretty advanced. when you compare it to pacman or walkman at the time. Sound gets a 10
Addictiveness . i can understand That The Limted arcade capabitles this game is still very fun to play you had a mutilplayer option  i find it really addicting for the main challenge of the game. i just wish it was longer im not gonna take a point away because its understandable.
     Addictiveness gets a 7
Story i explained it at the begging as the plot so I ll give the story a good 9 This story would be remaked in a similar fashion of Mario vs Donkey kong 1 and 2.  expect with mario dolls
Depth its honestly dependable on how well you play. but if you count the actual gameplay its pretty hard to master depth gets a 6 the game is a little bit too short.
Difficulty Donkey kong  you great ape fiend     lol    Its extremely challenging the controls work well     but jumping through the hard flaming objects  i mean sure its easy when you get to the begginning but it gets more harder. difficulty gets a 7pretty hard game
Honestly nintendo did a great job one this game  It saw mutiple releases on many consoles including the atari. It was toatlly one of the most popular games backthen     overall rating 9.5 A true Classic  that would stil stand for years

Donkey Kong: The Classic Masterpiece   emul11
Now, here's the thing. If I were given two choices, Donkey Kong, or Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles, would gladly choose Donkey Kong. The arcade version, that is. Today, I, emul11, am reviewing Donkey Kong for the arcade.
  Graphics: 10
Okay, no raging, but comparing it with the other arcade games of the 80's, this game is beautiful. The animations are nice and fluid, and the graphics without animations are stunning. Just take a look at how Donkey Kong looks on the level start screen. It's breathtaking. So the graphics get a 10. Moving on!
  Sound: 8
For it's time, the sound was pretty much revolutionary. But to be honest, today's games have way more tracks than this! It's still very nice, and the first level theme is stuck in my head. Do do do-do-do! The sound gets a 8.
  Addictiveness: 10
Let's face it, you knew this was going to be at 10. I always love to play to see if I can beat my old high score. So close! Enough said.
  Story: 2
This is the weakest part of the game, though it doesn't do much as you could just ignore the story completely. If you can't, then here it is: Donkey Kong kidnapped Pauline and Mar- whoops! I mean Jumpman! Jumpman has to save her. And that's about it. It gets a 2. Next!
  Depth: 7
This game is pretty good in terms of level design, but if you memorize the levels the game is pretty much reduced to a Atari 2600 game. Wait, didn't they release this for the Atari 2600? I'll have to try it sometimes. Anyways, the depth is low, but I still have yet to discover the Pie Factory that every one's talking about. My rating for the depth gets a 7. Last one!
  Difficulty: 4
This game is pretty easy, though that's only because I've played it to death. It may be hard to some of you, but it just feels easy to me. Although I have to agree on some other versions. That's right, I'm staring at you, Nintendo. The difficultly gets a 4.
  Overall Rating: 9.2
This game is very fun to play, an still keeps gamers even to this day. The difficulty may turn hardcore gamers who are looking for a challenge off, the levels may be in a pattern, but this game is still amazing. Do yourself a favor and play this. NOW.

Donkey Kong   The YouTuber 356
Donkey Kong is a classic arcade title from 1981 and is very famous.
I give this game a 9.5 because it is a classic and it's a great game.
Graphics: 9 The graphics are pretty good for an arcade game from 1981.
Sound: 8 Actually has some pretty good music and sound effects for it's time.
Addictiveness: 10 This is a very addicting game once you start playing you can't stop until you win.
Story: 5 The story is not much and is not very long. The story is that Jumpman's girlfriend Paulina gets captured by the ape Donkey Kong and now Jumpman goes to save her.
Depth: 5 The game is not very long it's actually only 3 levels long.
Difficulty: 5 The game is kind of hard when you play it the first time but every time you beat all 3 levels it restarts and is a harder difficulty than before like most arcade titles.

Stupid Monkey   Harley3651
Launching into American Arcades way back on July 31, 1981, Donkey Kong gave us the first glimpse of what Donkey Kong looked like. Back then he was one of Mario's foe's instead of being the big lovable ape we would come to love decades later. So what's this game like? Is it worth your time to play through? Well allow me to share my thoughts in the next 7 catagories.   Graphics 3: The graphics aren't anything special. Even back in '81 when the game first released it was real rough and blocky to look at. though not game breaking or anything just that its rough to look at from a retro standpoint.   Sound 6: The sound is pretty solid for the time. Its fun to hear Mario (then known as Jumpman) climb ladders and jump over barrels. What music there is, is also fun to listen to. Its nothing your gonna remember after you play the game. But during game play it is fun to listen to.   Story  1: Not much of a story. Donkey Kong kidnaps Mario's then girlfriend Pauline (sorry Peach). Mario being the stalwart hero he is sets off after the dumb ape to rescue her. Not much of a story like I had said. Then again it is a  Mario game. No one plays them for the story.   Addictiveness 1: I am not to likely to play this game again anytime soon. The game boasts of only 5 levels (4 if you play the NES version). Their really short levels and the whole game can be completed in less then an hour. In fact during my play through i manages to finish the game in 35 minutes.   Depth 1: As I said before the game only has 5 short levels that can be completed in less then 10 minutes each. That said depending on how often you die you can finish the entire game in less then an hour.       Difficulty 8: I decided to rate the difficulty pretty high. The game may start out easy but as you continue on its does tend to get a bit more challenging. That said it never got to the point where it gets to hard to where you can't play it. Yes, it does get harder as you go, but with some effort it's nothing you can't get through.   Overall 2.7: Overall i decided to rate the game a 2.7. Reason being is there isn't a lot there to keep you playing after you go through the games 5 levels. Though not a bad game, its just not a good game either.   Final Thoughts: Do I recommend this game? Yes and No. Yes I do recommend it if you've got time to kill or if you've never played it. No, I don't recommend the game to those looking for a fun gaming expierence cause its just not there. Therefore its not worth revisiting over and over again. One play through for me is all I needed to be satisfied. So yeah not a great game at all. More of a time waster then anything.
