Torchlight Featured Review

Torchlight Review by: SuperCrash64 - 9.4/10

Welcome to the Darkness Realm that is Torchlight

Torchlight was released by Runic games in 2009 and was one of the most memorable Hack and Slash titles on the PC.  After weeks of doing dungeons and other various quest in Torchlight,  I'm here to review my opinion.

I tried to play the game as soon as it was installed,  but I ran into some issues trying to get Torchlight to run on Windows 10  the game kept  saying the "UI resource files are missing" but thankfully that was fixed and I had a really good experience.

Graphics: 9/10
What's nice about the graphics in this game is that they are adjustable,  I'm running this game on a not so hot PC and that really helps with the Frames Per Second.

The graphics   look great for this 7 year old game, regardless of  what setting you have them on.  If I can describe the visuals, I'd say it's like a Diablo clone in that regard, you have the Torchlight town,  a dark cavern,  and a ton of ruin themed dungeons. Overall the game does a really good job just bringing in the dark atmosphere.

The 3D rendering on everything is good, but it also looks outdated for a 2009 game.  This game came out on the PC when the Xbox 360 and PS3 were still relevant platforms and the game it's self has a Polygon/Cartoonist type of render to it, for me this interferes with the dark theme of the game that is given to you.

Sound: 7/10

Like I've said about the graphics theme of the game, the music also feels heavily inspired by Diablo.   The main town theme reminds me a lot about Tristram,  likewise there are a lot of tracks that are dark themed and sound really good.

The sound effects are what you'd expect from this 2009 game.   You have all of your grunts when enemies die,  your character making attacking noises,  it has sound effects for when you complete a quest, it's very complete.

The only problem I have with the sound effects is overtime they tend to get annoying for example, if you have your pet taking the front line of enemies, you'll constantly hear "Your pet is injured", "Your Pet is hurt" ,  "Your pet has fled",  now this wouldn't be a problem  if it didn't play every time my pet's HP was low.

Addictiveness: 10/10

They did a good job keeping me addicted to this game,  this game has a ton of replay value.  There are still a lot of DPS builds like Poison, Fire, Ice, etc that I haven't tried out.

Which encourages me to make another character and try that build out.  You cannot reset your character's stats or spells,  so when you spec into a toon; make sure it's the play style you wanna use.

Story: 5/10

This game story is about you saving torchlight from an impending doom that awaits.  You go through each dungeon, trying to defeat and save others from their corrupted forms.

I can't really say much more then this, because otherwise I'll be spoiling the game.

Depth: 10/10

In Torchlight you have 3 main classes to choose from,  you have the Destroyer,  the Vanquisher, and the Alchemist.   Each class has their own distinct advantages over one another so there's a reason to check each of them out and see what works best for you.

The main game play comes from you killing tons of rats,  Skeletons,  Spiders, and  huge boss characters,  all while trying to do the main quest that will give you rewards that will benefit each unique play style you go with.

There are various things of armor to collect,  Gold being unique,  Purple being a set, Blue being rare, and Green being a common drop.  It's worth noting you'll need to carry an Identify Scroll before you use any of these items.

When you finish the game you'll unlock the crypt which has even more levels to kill enemies and get great rewards, so the game won't end as soon as you beat it.

There's also a shared chest or bank, which you can share the gear you've unlocked between different characters your working on.

Difficulty; N/A
Difficulty in this game is selectable so it really depends on what difficulty feels right for you.  I set my game on hard difficulty, and I died on the first boss.

I was expecting the second boss to be even harder, but thanks to my build of my character I took no damage from the second boss in the game, thus making him a cakewalk.
So the difficulty isn't bad,  I would appreciate it more if they added some consistency to the boss battles.

Conclusion:
I've only found a small portion of flaws within the game and to be honest,  they are minor cons at that.    So with all of the good parts  I mentioned about the game, I highly recommend you check it out.

Torchlight Game Description

Word of Ember blazed across the land, and the town of Torchlight flared to life.

Ember is the essence of magic and the keystone of alchemy; it lures the restless with promises of power and riches. Miners burrowed deep beneath the dirt streets of Torchlight, discovering veins of the ore richer than any found in living memory—but they were not the first to covet these mines. The miners broke through into the buried past, a dangerous labyrinth of caverns and ruined civilizations, twisted creatures and the bones of those who came before. Evil bubbles up from the depths and threatens to overrun this town as it has so many others. The heart of a villain has infused the Ember, and his darkness seeps through the veins. To survive, the townspeople must break the cycle of destruction; they need a champion who can destroy the evil at its root. Removing the source of the rot may purify the Ember, but it is a long and perilous journey. The champion must battle through rock and fire, through lost cities and ancient tombs, into the palace of the villain himself.

The adventure is set in the mining settlement of Torchlight, a boomtown founded on the discovery of rich veins of Ember—a rare and mysterious ore with the power to enchant or corrupt all that it contacts. This corruptive power may have dire consequences however, and players set out into the nearby mountains and depths below to discover the full extent of Ember’s influence on the civilizations that have come before.

Players will choose from among three character classes, and venture from the safety of the town of Torchlight into randomly generated dungeon levels, with a huge variety of creepy monsters, endless variations of loot to find, and quests to complete. The endless randomization ensures a long-lived gameplay experience.

Key Features:

• Randomization – Level layouts are randomly created, so each adventure is unique. Monsters, treasures, puzzles, and items are also different each time you embark on an adventure.
• Easy, approachable interface – Torchlight is designed to be easy to play right from the beginning. The intuitive interface gives players easy access to a rich and varied world.
• Retirement System – Once characters are sufficiently leveled up, they can “retire” and bestow specific benefits and perks to new characters.
• Pets – Players will choose a pet to accompany them. Pets can level up along with the player, and will help in battle, carry items, and perform a variety of helpful services.
• Character Classes – Players will create and customize a character and choose an animal companion. Through cosmetic choices, skill path decisions, and the treasures they acquire, each character will be custom-tailored and different.
• Fishing – Players can take a break from the high-energy pace of adventuring to visit one of the fishing holes and relax and see what they can catch. Fish have interesting benefits for the player and pet, and other rewards can also be discovered
• Editor – Runic Games is embracing our modding community by providing an editor so our players can create and design their own content.
