Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 Review by: zanderlex - 9.5/10
Great Skateboarding GameAt the time of it’s releases, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 was considered to be one of the highest ranking video games of all time and currently has the second highest Metascore of any video game. This game also happens to be one of the best sporting video games that I have ever played. This isn’t just because it might have been the first sports game I played, but mostly because it allowed me to do something that I have never tried before, Skateboarding, and it allowed you to perform some things that real skateboarders would never try.
The games graphics were much better than those of the first game in the series, and they were really good considering it was a sports game that came out in 2000 and that most sports video games that came out in the 20th century did not really have graphics that were of that good a quality. Everything in the game is detailed enough and for the graphics aspect of the game, I give it an 8 out of 10.
Sound is next, and I will admit that the sound is quite entertaining, especially when you skate right into a wall. Aside from these various noises, there are 15 songs in the soundtrack and some are decent enough to listen to as you are skating in the hanger or somewhere else. Most of the songs though, are from individuals and groups that are not that well known such as Lagwagon and Rage Against The Machine. However, just because you don’t know them does not mean that you should not like their music and because of this, I give the sound portion an 8 out of 10.
The Addictiveness of the game is really what had made the game so popular because it allowed you to be a skateboarder and skate around tons of places such as an airplane Hanger, a school, and even uptown Manhattan. You really can play the game on free mode for hours at a time because each time you play, something different is going to happen and you will never get bored. If you do happen to get bored from doing the same thing over and over, all that you have to do is move onto another location. The game is very addicting an and for this aspect, I give a perfect score of 10.
There isn’t really much of a story aside from what is known as the career mode. In this more you are placed in a certain level and you are allowed to skate around that location for 2 minutes. During that 2 minutes, you have to do certain tasks such as score a certain amount of points, find all the letters of SKATE or do a specific combo. Once you pass all the missions for that location, you move onto another location. This is an okay story because this kind has not really been seen until now and I give it an 8 out of 10.
As for the depth, there isn’t really that much considering you are confined to a certain location and even though there are a lot of locations, there isn’t really much more to do. Because of this, I give the depth a 7 out of 10.
Next is the difficulty and I give this aspect a 7. There is nothing easier than playing a skating game, but when you are in career mode, some of the missions can become challenging such as the COMBO missions and getting to a certain score.
This is still a really great game and it’s one of my favorites. I give this game an overall grade of 9.5 and I highly recommend this game.
