the first Oregon Trail PC game! classgame
So here's the thing I actually own the PC version of the game that was released in the mid 90s, as well as the handheld version that was released a few years back (which I found at Calendar Club, still waiting for Handheld Carmen to show up here, but I think I may have missed that boat, it's not my fault, the pandemic came along). One of these days I will do Screen Shots for this game (it would be nice to have something on hand considering that I won't have time to do reviews every day during the winter TdV)
Gameplay and Story: The Year in 1848 and for some reason everyone is heading out west for a new life in a new land, of course it's not an easy journey this can take months, dealing with obstacles like tough rivers, ferry wait times, the risk of disease back when they could have used Vaccines, etc. You gotta buy supplies at forts, and hunt for food (I recommend buying an extra 500 pounds of food in between certain locations because at one point hunting will be scarce).
Graphics: While not the first game in the franchise overall, it does the best it can, I have played a version of this where the water actually moves, and not when you are crossing the river.
Soundtrack: Each location in the game has it's own background music some of them have vocals some don't, it's where I first heard Wayfaring Stranger. And it leads up to an awesome rendition of Viva la companie once you reach the Williamette valley. Also the travelling music changes every time you change your pace. Also when you or your travelling companions croak we get some kind of rendition of Amazing Grace, and if you die in the game you get your own epitaph on your tombstone. Just to be funny I actually put Go Jets Go on it last time I died in the game, I should definitely have a screenshot of it next time I play.
Addictive: This game isn't that addictive but it does as the franchise goes on, however mostly they offer hunting in this game and trading and river crossed once you get to The Dalles.
.
Depth: This game offers a handful of locations, however in the Demo Version you can only go as far as For Kearney, oh and we don't hear background music when travelling. As the franchise goes on we get alot more to do.
Difficulty: well if you are new to the game you have a difficult time, heck I was scared over the fact that I had to buy supplies, until I realized, no you use the game money not your own, and once I got the hang of that I felt good about playing it.
Post Review Follow-up: So the game actually is playable on Classic Reload (it's a good site, they take requests, it's because of me that there are games like Odell Down Under, Alien Tales and Math Blaster in Search of Spot on the site all because the nostalgia of Christmas past got triggered and boy can it ever happen!)
This concludes my review, join me tomorrow when I review Oregon Trail II, which I will have to pre-write because I'll be busy tomorrow morning.
