Super Pika Land Ultra. Flavored fun! Burnseb01
Super Pika Land
When I first saw this game, I was pretty skeptical. I played the Game Boy version and I didn't really enjoy it, probably because I've never really enjoyed Super Mario Land.
Graphics
The graphics remind me of another Super Mario World hack called
Super Mario World- Redrawn. They look great compared to Super Mario World but there are games on the Super Nintendo with far superior graphics such as Star Fox (Starwing in Europe due to copyright) and the Donkey Kong Country trilogy.
Music
The music, for the Super Nintendo's standards is absolutely brilliant. They picked out some of the best songs from the games that they took the music from (Castlevania, Super Mario 3D Land, etc.) and the 16-bit instruments make the music sound even better. In my opinion, 8-bit and 16-bit will almost always be more appealing than the original compositions.
Addictiveness
This game... oh, this game. To me, Platformers will always be one of the most addictive genres of Video game next to Puzzle and RPGs
For the past week, I've been coming back every day to try and get as far as I can and so far I'm not even finished with it yet.
Story
The Story isn't really much to think about. You're a young Pikachu stuck on an island and needs to get off it. But obviously, 80s-90s Mario Games were never made for the story, the reason we all love them so much is for the gameplay.
Depth
Like I said earlier, I've not even finished with this game yet so I don't have much right to say how deep it is until I beat the game. As far as the overworld goes, I think I'll be at it for a while.
The game has the depth of Super Mario World, it has Secret Exits on certain levels, Boss Battles that vary from boss to boss. It's exactly what you'd expect from a 90's platformer, just with a Pokémon theme.
Difficulty
The game as a whole isn't that difficult. Certain levels are harder than others. Personally at the time of writing this, I've been having a hard time with the 2nd Boss, Krabby (or Kingler? The sprite makes it kinda hard to tell.)
Overall Opinion
Personally, I think this game is Top Notch. The sprites, the wonderful Music, the level design, Almost everything about this game is great although I do have some minor complaints.
Complaints
My first complaint is that Pika/Raichu's arsenal of Power-Ups are limited to the Thunder stone and Lightning Bolt which are just re-sprited Mushrooms and Fire Flowers, This IS a hack of Super Mario World, Where are the capes?
My second complaint is not very important but I find it as a minor issue, some levels lead to shortcuts to later worlds, When I beat a certain level, I unlocked World 2. The rest of World 1 was still there, I just ended up being completely distracted by World 2.
