Muffin Reviews Portal Knights   RavusRat
Hello and welcome to my review of portal Knights, It will be the 4th game I Review in 2019
Portal Knights is a game that takes a lot from its predecessor Minecraft, except it adds a different lick of paint and adds a few other extras in it that are enough to differentiate it from Minecraft. Your aim is to find Portals and slowly make your way through various worlds with different biomes, whilst helping people along the way, aka doing quests. Will you become a Portal Knight or will you just become another pathetic Knave
Graphics
The art style for portal knights is very simple but effective. It's landscapes are similar to minecraft in the fact that they are blocks, but the graphics are more detailed and have a nice cartoonish feel to them. The worlds are often beautiful and fit a specific theme such as a Frozen Tundra, A world with lots of marshlands and lakes. Gorgeous grasslands and several more. The thing that I like the most is the character models though. They are very cutesy but they have put effort into making the gear you can find on your adventure different, by that I mean unlike minecraft where the armor simply changes colour, the armor changes design completely and most of them look pretty cool in my honest opinion.
Sound
The sound is alright, but nothing spectacular. The sound effects for combat are nice and clear and enemies sometimes give clear audio cues on when they're going to attack whilst others only give visual cues. The music in the game for me was forgettable and a bit repetitive so much so that I literally was listening to my own spotify play list after about 2 or so hours of playing the game. The sound design isn't bad.. It's just not very interesting or memorable at all.
Addictiveness
I would say that this game is rather addictive, especially if you play the game with friends as it's multiplayer. It reminds me a lot of minecraft and of no man's sky. Where if you love the game and don't mind slowly progressing, getting the next upgrade.. Going to a new area.. Getting the nest upgrade and repeat. But if that kind of gameplay bores you quickly I don't think you'll enjoy this game for too long. Hence why having friends to play can stop you feeling the grind so much. Quests do break the flow sometimes in a good way, but sometimes they can just be fetch quests.. And most of the time you probably have the item they ask for on you anyways,
Story
There isn't much of a story honestly. All you have to do is defeat the big bad. There's really not much more to it than that. Even the quests aren't really relevant to the main story besides a couple of key items you need to get to open boss portals to progress. Speaking of which the bosses have no personality either.. It's just a basic boss fight with basic mechanics.. Such as find the biggest worm... or hit the projectiles back at the boss etc. If you're looking for a good story I would not look for one here at all.
Depth
There is depth to this game certainly if your having a fun time with friends. But I feel if you are playing the game alone then I don't think you'll play it much more or at all after beating the final boss. Granted it takes a while to actually reach the last boss, This isn't a game that can be finished that quickly after all. Especially with some portals being incredibly annoying to find, and you have to actually do enough in the worlds to get random pieces of portal shards to make into the specified cubes needed to make the actual portal itself work.  Basically you get to a new world.. Try to find the portals or mini dungeons that usually have loot or the portal at the end of them. Make sure you have enough of the specified portal block to make the portal and then go onto the next world. Most worlds have more than 1 portal also, With some portals literally leading to a dead end.
Difficulty
I didn't really find this game hard at all. I mostly played as a knight and just held down the attack button most of the time.. Whilst dodging enemy attacks when forced too. It's clearly a game designed to be fun and to be accessible to kids younger than their teens for sure. The only time it gets difficult is when you progress through several portals too quickly before getting better gear.. Or you dig into a dungeon room with about 5-6 mobs in it. As fighting multiple mobs can be rather annoying due to the targeting system that locks onto one enemy at a time. Besides that though the game is not hard.. It's just a grind.
Final Thoughts
Portal Knights is one of those games where I wouldn't recommend playing it, unless you wanted to play a game with either younger family members or friends. There are far better games than this if you plan to play it alone that's for sure. The simple nature of the game is fun at first but it does get tiresome rather quickly. Especially when you have difficulty finding the portals needed to progress and you spend 4 hours randomly digging around or using the compass and slowly finding your way near it but only on a horizontal plain.. (basically you just dig down after you get a full circle of the portal colour around you)
So if you're bored and your friends are bored too.. Give this game a go. If you want to introduce kids into a game other than minecraft then give this a go... otherwise don't bother!
