Little jimmy will hate getting this one as a chistmas present.   RedHotToddy
When I was a kid, I really loved the movie gremlins, I thought it was an amazing horror film back then, and today my opinions on it haven't changed one bit! I wasn't to fond or aware of the gremlins franchise getting some video games, But when I saw this one a long time ago, I was really excited! But really...Oh well, this is Gremlins 2 the new batch for the Game boy. Will this game do the series justice? Or will it turn out to be another cash-in game to make money out of Zach branniagn's "Beep"? Let's find out!
Story-6/10
The story behind this one is that gizmo's owner (Forgot the name) is telling him some random weird stuff about this store being torn down, and then we are brung right into his office, Gizmo's owner tells him something about evil gremlins and drinking water, and just then the office is hit with water from the drinking fountain! Now our hero has broughten these evil gremlins into the universe to cause peril and destruction! It is now up to you to help our hero gizmo stop this invasion and save his world!
Gameplay-5/10
For the most part, Gremlins 2 the new batch is about as simple and paint-by-numbers as you can get for a platforming game like this, You control gizmo through big vast levels, defeating enemies, collecting items, and doing alot of other crazy stuff along the way. The controls are really simple for a Game boy game, you press the D-pad to move, You tap the A button to jump, and you press the B button to use your attack. Right off the bat gizmo is armed with one of the dumbest ideas for a weapon, A little puny pencil! That is right, you will have to defeat your foes with this little thing! But anyways, in each level it is your job to get gizmo from the beginning of the level to the end without getting torn down, the first problem I have with this game is how complicated everything is!  In each level there are so many enemies and hazards that you barely have any room or time to react and move!  Second off, as seen in the first level, there is a scenario where you must get past this pit of spikes with a spring, but no matter what you do, You will always and I say ALWAYS land into the spikes! Right after that they give you a health pickup but you cannot get it because gizmo jumps too low to even get anywhere! But anyways, as for the items our hero will be collecting, well here they are! You have hearts to replenish your health bar, you have these metal gear solid like boxes will grant you invincibility, and well...That is it! At the end of each level, you will have to fight a boss gremlin, These guys are tough, and I mean TOUGH. You can barely attack them perfectly because the pencil is so weak and doesn't attack very far.  You know what, I can't take this no longer, on to the graphics!
Graphics-7/10
For a movie game made in 1992 for the game boy, this looks as simple as you can get as well, I know the Game boy wasn't the most powerful system back then, but boy did It have some so-so looking games to it, and here is one of them! Each of the worlds you will be adventuring through are actually pretty big and offer alot to do! The sprites however need quite alot of work though! Our hero gizmo looks pretty okay, you know He actually looks like himself, and his enemies are really nothing to write home about! You will be of course fighting the evil gremlins, but all the other guys look like they were scrapped off of a book of video game enemies, I can't even explain them in the slightest way possible. The HUD In the game is pretty self explanatory, It displays your current amount of lives, your health meter which is measured by 4 hearts, and that is it. If you run out of lives then it is game over and you are taken to the continue screen, and if you lose all your hearts then you will lose a life and start the entire level all over again.
Sound-5/10
The sound in this game is actually pretty catchy to be honest! I mean, this game was made by sunsoft, so of course the music has got to be good, and this is no exception! The music in each level you will be exploring is really catchy happy and helps you prepare for the rest of the level and the game. The sound effects are your typical stuff, you get a bunch of beeps bloops booms and alot of other stuff. The music can get a little repetitive, but it is no problem.
Addictiveness-4/10
I didn't really have much fun with this game really, I remembered playing this game back then and just shutting it off after the first 5 few minutes because the game plays like your typical movie game, But did I have any fun with this one at all? Oh wait, yeah, I really didn't, because the game is really hard and feels like a really unfinished game as well.
Depth-3/10
The game is really really short! I know you haven't noticed this, but the game is only 4 levels long! So you can most likely beat this game in about 30 minutes or so. After all that, the game just sends you back to the title screen and well that is it! All of that hard work and frustration for that! You really won't want to play this again anyway.
Difficulty-10/10
This game is really hard to be enjoyed by it's target audience! I remembered dieing so much times because the levels offer too many hazards and enemies to kill you and whatnot. I shut this one off after a really short time because how much I raged. This is way too hard for a kids game.
Overall-4.3/10
This is the kind of game that you will hate getting as a Christmas present, and I think you will all agree with me! I gave this game a 4.3 because how hard broken and really unplayable it is! If you want a good gremlins game, I suggest you get the NES version of this one. Or some developers could just bring back and create that cancelled gremlins game for Gamecube and PS2! Just don't play this one! This has been RedHotToddy, and I am signing off.
