The Fairy Tail Game Is Way Better Than I Thought It Would Be   zanderlex
I am a big fan of Fairy Tail. I first started watching the anime at around the start of 2020 or end of 2019 and quickly fell in love with it. I loved the humor and the editing, and I really loved some of the characters. The more I watched it, the more I liked it and when I found out that there was going to be a game, like a full fledged RPG, I was super excited. My excitement for the game grew every week until the game came out.
I pre ordered it and then downloaded it the day it came out. But I never played it. I heard a couple bad things about the game during the 1st week of August and I decided to hold off on playing. I heard that there were a couple issues with graphics and that there was some bugs and other problems that were going to be taken care of with a patch. So I held off on playing. This was a game that I was really excited for, so I wanted to wait until after a patch or two to play so that my first experience would be the best it could possibly be.
I ended up going months without playing. There were multiple patches and updates during the first 3 months after release but after waiting for so long, I eventually went on to other things. But about two weeks before Christmas I got into the RPG groove again and knew that it was going to be time to play this. So during the first week of January I played it for the first time, and I loved it. I ended up playing a couple hours a day for nearly two weeks thinking that the game was way better than what I was hoping for.
GRAPHICS: 9/10
When I first saw gameplay footage of Fairy Tail around the end of 2019, I wasn’t all that impressed with how it looked, but about a month before it came out, I checked it out again and realized that it was actually much better than I thought it was. Then, once I started actually playing the game I realized that there must have been something wrong with me because the graphics were absolutely amazing apart from the occasional lag and FPS issues.
When you first start up the game, you start by being a part of this big battle against Hades, while playing with the core members of the guild. This basically serves as a tutorial for how to battle and also serves as a basic introduction to the characters and when the story takes place. But it’s also much more than that because it’s beautiful to watch. There’s cut scenes that look like they would have fit in the anime perfectly, many of the battle animations look amazing, and the character movements and animation in battles are very smooth, clean, and full of life.
Many of the textures of items and structures you’re close to will be horrible at times but if you look past that and at the overall scenery, some parts of the game will be breathtaking. The character models are also really good. Overall, I think the graphics are amazing as a whole. If it hadn’t been for some bad textures, I would have given this aspect a 10 out of 10 for the cut scenes and battle graphics alone, but with those nuisances, it gets a 9 out of 10 from me.
SOUND: 9/10
The sound is one of the games strong points simply because it’s an anime game and uses full Japanese voice acting. That’s a real treat and in addition to voice acting, there’s also some really good music scattered throughout the soundtrack and many of the battle sounds felt like they came right out of the anime.
I thought it would have been awesome if you could listen to the English voice actors too like some games give you the option to right away or as DLC. I don’t have anything wrong with Japanese voice acting, but there were plenty of times where I would have rather been playing and listening to what was being said instead of having to read too. Maybe that comes as a DLC later, who knows. My overall grade for sound is a 9 out of 10.
ADDICTIVENESS: 10/10
As a fan of the Fairy Tail anime, I knew that I would have lots of fun with this game. But like I had mentioned earlier, it ended up being even better than I was hoping for. There’s lots of stuff that I wanted to be in the game that I got and stuff that I didn’t even know I wanted that was there too.
When I first played the game, I was a big fan of the battling mechanics. In some ways, the battles made me think of a mix of Persona and Final Fantasy with some tactical gameplay thrown in. Each character had a bunch of moves to choose from and the tactical aspect added so much to the gameplay meaning that you had to really focus on what character and move you were going to use.
Because of this, I felt that each battle was lots of fun and doing battles over didn’t really feel like a chore because there were so many ways that each could be completed. I also really enjoyed reliving large chunks of the Fairy Tail story as well as having a role within the Fairy Tail universe.
It was just so much fun being able to play as my favorite Fairy Tail characters, exploring areas from the anime, taking on all sorts of quests, and most importantly, upgrading the guild hall. It was really like I was there and it was so much fun. I definitely think that the addictiveness aspects deserves a 10 out of 10, especially for fans of the franchise.
Story: 9/10
Fairy Tail packs a lot of story into the game, but as far as I can tell, there isn’t anything original. It all follows the Fairy Tail anime and manga, so if you’re already a fan, then you don’t need an explanation of the story. One thing that you do need to know is that it doesn’t begin at the actual beginning of Fairy Tail, but rather far into the series, so none of the introductions or early on stuff from the franchise is in the game.
The game itself starts with the Tenrou island arc when the Fairy Tail members are all trying to achieve S Class ranks. So much in the Fairy Tail universe is already over at this point because this takes place around 100 episodes into the anime and around 200 chapters into the manga. So it is kind of weird that it starts so deep into the story, but there’s still a lot of content plot wise
The game follows the plots of multiple arcs and if you were to add up all the anime episodes that encompass the game, you would be looking at around 100 episodes worth of content easily. I don’t want to spoil which other events and arcs are covered in the game, just know that there are a lot and to some fans, they are some of the best the franchise has to offer. I think that the story as a whole is great overall and gets a 9 out of 10 from me. People who love Fairy Tail in general would probably argue that it’s an easy 10.
Depth: 9/10
One of my favorite things to do in the game is take photos. The photo mode in this game isn’t as high tech as those in some other games but it fits into the Fairy Tail universe quite well by allowing you to use borders that seem to be pulled right out of the anime. Plus the many of the scenery is beautiful and can lead to some great shots while you change things like character poses and other stuff. The only thing that I don’t like about the photo mode is that once you taker a screenshot, the game automatically fills up the bottom of the photo with a bunch of copyright stuff which ruins the photo a bit.
Photos aren’t the only thing that you can do in the game, there’s just too much to offer. There’s more than a dozen different places that you get to access including the city where Fairy Tail is located obviously, as well as the option to upgrade the actual guild hall. There’s also so many playable characters, in fact when you add up all the playable characters from the base game and the DLC, you get nearly two dozen to choose from.
There’s also so much to do in terms of the actual guild hall. For instance, during a large chunk of the game, you will spend some time upgrading the guild hall itself. Throuhgout the guild there will be an item shop, a lab, a library, a kitchen, a storage room, dining area, counter, pool, a stage and the quest board. You can upgrade each a number of times which will unlock different things.
Speaking of the quest board, in addition to the main story of the game, there are so many quests that you will be able to take on. There’s going to be enough quests for you to spend countless hours on. It can be very easy to get 50 hours out of the game. Overall there’s just so much to do and it’s a lot of fun, depth gets a 9 out of 10 from me.
DIFFCIULTY: 4
I wouldn’t say that Fairy Tail is difficult at all. If you believe that some battles are too hard, you can easily get stronger. Focus on other quests and worry about getting different items that can help you out and upgrading the guild hall to get boosts in different areas. Once you’re strong enough, you can easily go back to where you left off, so just do the game at your own pace.
OVERALL: 9.2/10
Overall the game has been an absolute treat for me. I love Fairy Tail as a whole and was really excited for the game, but my own expectations of the game were broken with how good it ended up being in some areas. Obviously there’s a couple areas where the game lacks but it’s a joy for anyone who loves the anime or manga with so much to do and explore, and the ability to play through some of the big events from the franchise while playing as your favorite characters.
Many games that are based on anime go the fighting game route and while there are a bunch that go the JRPG route or another route, only a handful have been successful. I think this one was definitely a success. As an RPG, it’s a really fun game with good battle mechanics and some nice animations. As a Fairy Tail game, it’s really good with the story, voice acting, characters, and settings. Put the two together and you got yourself a really good game. My overall grade for Fairy Tail is going to be a 9.2 out of 10.
