My first review of a Nintendo 3DS game. Code of Princess is one of the first games that Atlus Published for Nintendo 3DS, Atlus has supported the Nintendo 3DS for a long time and the company has published a lot of games for the system,
including some exclusives, Code of Princess isn't a Nintendo 3DS exclusive anymore, but the original version is still worth playing. The fanservice in this game really doesn't go very far, it isn't much more than the clothes (or lack of) that the protagonist wears, The necromancer Zozo, maybe, and also...the final boss. Other than those characters, I'd say that the game is more conservative and less suggestive than many other anime style games, in fact, the game barely has suggestive dialogue, maybe only 2 or 3 lines are a little suggestive. It goes without saying that some have complained about the design of the main character, but...anyway, that doesn't matter. Let's begin.
Story: It's not a complex story and it doesn't go through a lot of places, but I like it nonetheless. In a world where the humanity and the monsters enjoyed peace, the monsters, after centuries, start to attack humans, the main character, Solange Blanchefleur de Lux, has to protect the legendary sword DeLuxcalibur, a sword that has been passed down through the royal family for generations. Solange has to gather allies in order to protect her kingdom, and reclaim the castle, since the castle has surrendered, it won't be a good idea to go back for a while, unfortunately, the princess Solange and her partners are being persecuted by the army, and they have to fight. It really isn't much more than that, however, being a fan of fantasy games, a story that involves monsters, a holy sword, and maybe a few characters with magic/powers, I can't help but like the story and world of Code of Princess, the game takes itself seriously to an extent, but it also has its funny moments like many other Japanese games. Overall, it's a simple (more or less) story that works, and I like it.
Graphics: Code of Princess was one of the first anime style games developed for Nintendo 3DS, I'd say that even for its time, it wasn't exactly the most beautiful or impressive game for Nintendo 3DS. the game has good graphics, the 3D models (I think?) for the characters look great, but they clash with the rest of the graphics except for the menus and 2D art, most of the graphics look like a Dreamcast game or something like that, and even for Nintendo 3DS, that's...not good enough, however, the 2D art looks really nice, the menus look good, and as I said, the characters during the game look great, those aspects make up for the rest of the graphics. Code of Princess also has an animated opening and brief animated sequences that look great to this day, I must say, however, that I didn't consider those things for this category, obviously animated cutscenes in an anime style game never depend on the engine or hardware, like a pre-rendered cutscene, I mean, we have Playstation games that have animated cutscenes that still look great (Mega Man X4), so, if an anime style game has animated cutscenes and/or an animated opening, that...shouldn't be considered for the graphics. Overall, the game looks nice, it's not something that is pushing the system, perhaps, and there are a lot of games for Nintendo 3DS that look better (Super Mario 3D Land, Nano Assault, Kirby Triple Deluxe...), but what is here...looks good enough, more or less.
Sound: At times, Code of Princess has amazing music, the boss theme ''Turn It Up!'' sounds great, Solange also has an awesome theme, ''Holy Princess (Solange's Theme)'' is great music that combines a little of everything, piano, electric guitar, violins, and drums. The voice acting is pretty good, the characters have fitting voices and the acting is great for the most part, the main character, Solange, is voiced by none other than Laura Bailey. It must be mentioned that, like other games published by Atlus, you can't play Code of Princess with the original Japanese voices, I don't really have a problem with that considering that, as I've said before, I'm more of a dub person, but perhaps not everyone is going to like the fact that you can't play with the original voices, on Nintendo 3DS at least. The sound effects complement the action, and considering that this is a beat 'em up (with RPG elements), it could not have been otherwise, I really like the sound effects in the menus.
Addictive: The game is really fun, despite being repetitive, beat 'em ups are repetitive by nature, perhaps even more than other genres, but even so, I really like this game. In Code of Princess, there are different playable characters you can use, the attacks and skills vary from one character to another, at least for some characters. You mainly attack with the B button and also defend with the R button (L also works), the X button is used to activate and deactivate Burst, which can be used to temporarily increase your attack, and it can also paralyze enemies, in this game you have HP and MP, and to use some attacks, you need MP. The A button can be used for a strong attack, which might or might not require MP. I have never played Guardian Heroes, it's been said before that Code of Princess is a spiritual successor to Guardian Heroes, and...what can I say? It's a fun game, even if you have never played Guardian Heroes, it's unfortunate that the game doesn't run perfectly, the original Nintendo 3DS version runs at 30FPS at best, and when the game suffers from slowdown, it affects the experience at times, it's a shame, because when Code of Princess runs well, it's a great game.
Depth: There is some content in the game, even if the story isn't very long, the different modes and extra content are a reason to play more, it might not be the Nintendo 3DS game with the biggest amount of content, but it's something.
Difficulty: The game is really difficult at times, I had to level up Solange a lot before defeating the final boss, the final boss is difficult to defeat, and some missions can be hard if you aren't careful or your character isn't strong enough.
I must say that, unlike my previous reviews where the overall rating I gave the game is my best rating, or, in other words, the rating I'd give the game at best, for Code of Princess, the rating of 8 is actually the minimum rating I'd give this game, I though about it a little, and I'm not really sure what would be the most exact rating I'm willing to give this game, maybe a rating of 8.5/10 would be better? 9.0/10? I don't know, but what I don't know is that I feel that this game deserves at least a rating of 8/10 and also...I like this game.
