So, I've been a Star Trek fan since I can remember. I've watched Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager and every movie that has been made both old and new. I wouldn't call myself a huge fan but I've watched enough Star Trek to understand how it should feel and look and generally be.... and this new show is NOT Star Trek, at least not yet.

I don't know who they got to write this show or who was supposed to over-see it in order to make sure it still fit into the existing Star Trek universe but they should be fired. The show, direction, sets, aliens, acting.... none of it fits. It's so bad.

What is with the Klingons? Those are not Klingons! Seriously bad alien design. You had an ESTABLISHED look for 50 years and for some reason now was the time to completely change that design? Unless they find some way to tie in the old look to the new look it is one of the most distracting things so far.

I'm really disappointed in this show so far. The early episodes are really poorly done and make no sense.

The "main character", which deviates from Star Trek norms, is horrible. I'm not sure why she was supposed to be "progressive" because all they've really done is create a character I dislike. There is NOTHING likeable about her. Also, back to the point about no main characters - there were prominent characters in every show but no show had a single main character. Picard was the captain but the majority of the stories revolved around the entire crew or around a different member of the crew. Sure he had his own stories was was involved heavily in nearly every episode but he wasn't the MAIN character. Everyone in Discovery so far has been forgettable except for the original captain but she's already been written out.

I'm going to try and give this show a chance to continue on (cause, Jason Isaacs mostly) but if it doesn't improve I won't bother with it much longer. I don't have the time to watch a bad show when I know there are a lot of others out there.

I've never been much of a fan of Star Trek, but I can tell that this is something my grandpa would not like based on your descriptions. He grew up with the original series and movies and still watches the newer movies and shows. If he hasn't seen this, he will not like it if he sees it.

Boured : yeah, I've been reading a lot of other people's thoughts about the show since writing this and a lot of people feel similarly about this new show as I do.

I feel the same way about the newer movies as this new show. It is Star Trek in name only but the substance is far from Star Trek. Star Trek is not flashy, super action packed stuff but it seems like the people who understand Star Trek aren't involved in the newer stuff.

I heard of this irl. I heard of a new Star Trek series but i heard it was on Netflix only. I'm a Star Trek fan too and i really enjoy watching Star Trek: Voyager at the moment. And then i heard of Star Trek: Discovery and... Yeah.

It's a shame to now know the Klingons aren't like before. (though my favourite Star Trek 'enemies' are the Borg) Would you recommend this show to other fans anyway?

MarioLucarioFan64 : I honestly wouldn't recommend this show to non-Star Trek fans at this point. It's not even a good "sci-fi" show. At least not yet.

Obviously the attempt at getting people hooked with a big exciting first couple of episodes fell flat (to me and many others) because big and flashy episodes are the exception to Star Trek and not the rule.

It simply doesn't feel like a proper Star Trek show and it also is pretty unremarkable as a generic show as well.

Like I said before, I'm going to keep watching the show in order to see if it improves only because I'm hopeful for more Star Trek but I'm not optimistic.

So I started watching the third episode and so far it is much better than the first 2. The early story did nothing for me but this one is better. Still not great but improved. I'm more interested in where things are going with this new ship and captain than I was with all the old Klingon stuff and what not. No need to re-hash what I didn't like about the first 2 episodes.

The third episode was simply better. I felt reasonably tense when they boarded the sister ship and were trying to figure out what was going on there.

I am much more hopeful about the show after this episode than I was. I still hope the story slows down a bit to be more "Star Trek" like. The show still feels more like a generic sci-fi show than a Star Trek show.
