EDIT: I came up with words, one by a typo (qork) that a friend suggested I roll with as a measurement name, and two by using approximations to certain Japanese words (samai, and kimet).

I've been writing a story for a while now, and I recently came across a situation that is giving me some trouble, so I decided to post this in hopes that at least one person (hopefully more) would offer some help.


I need a new distance measuring unit. More specifically, I need two new names for distance measurements. So I'm asking for help here: suggest names that I could use, please. I only have three requirements on them:
1. No real life measurements
2. No measurements called Bleams. Long story. Suffice to say the term is taken and I don't want to reuse it for reasons. lol
3. You give me your full permission to use the term(s) I pick for good, regardless of how or in what format.


So to be clear...
What I need:
Two new names for distance measurements. Feel free to share more than two if you'd like, but only suggest four or five at the most, please. If you only have one, feel free to just offer that one.


What I don't need:
Any real measurements, bleams, or an explanation as to how they could work. I already know how they will be used in my story, and a bunch of extra descriptions placed here would only serve to distract my easily distracted mind even further. lol Thanks in advance for keeping the answers simple.


Now, fire away, folks! And remember: no more than four or five measurement terms suggested by any one user, please.

I'm intrigued about the part where we can't use a 'bleam.' There has to be a back story to that. I wouldn't have come up with that in the first place.

The second part of this post is this: What language are we talking? If it's an English-based language and you're in the future or writing about something, we'd need the phonetic make-up to sound similar. The names have to be similar to whatever race of alien or whatever culture of human is the character using the distance.

For example, a Japanese culture wouldn't have a city named Dracktow. That's not believable. Kiso-Abe, however, is entirely believable as a prefecture or town in Japan.

If it's English, try these two:

Molo, plural being molos

Lada, plural being "lada," no extra s on the end

Those are simple, they flow off the tongue, they don't sound forced, and you can give whatever background in the writing necessary to bring the reader into the fold.

They would probably work for future sci-fi as well. "Sir, enemy battle cruiser, sector Z-17-Five. Range, 17 molos. We have a firing solution on them."

That kinda works.

Ghostbear1111 : Lol Bleam was used as a time measurement in Mork and Mindy. I like the show, but I don't want my story associated with something so silly.

The simple for me, difficult for you answer is it's for my story Dust Trails: of Earth.
The more explanatory answer (since I doubt you want to read seventeen chapters just to answer a question that was all a matter of you participating out of kindness) is that the language is English largely, but some of the words so far have been derived from Japanese, and one word was derived from both Japanese and Chinese. If it helps, those words were Simkatte, Kithain, and Bagain. The actual characters speak English though (it's indirectly implied however that two also speak at least one other language), and while it isn't futuristic it is fantasy and contains many concepts that tend to define futuristic stories. Sorry if that's too vague, I just don't want to spoil any of it, should anyone who reads it see this.
