Well, since there's no reason for me to just be that "unknown fellow lurking around", I guess I'll share a bit about myself and why I joined this website in the first place. For this, I will be displaying it as a Q & A format type of post, my apologies if it comes off as rude or some other negative attitude associated, not my intention to do so.

Furthermore, all of this (and being online here overall) is on mobile due to my PC dying a decent while back. So if things seem misplaced or incorrectly typed up, then that would probably be due to the touchscreen on my phone not being as accurate as I would like for it to be.

Anyways, let's get to the Q&A:

Q : Your username seems to be a generic word play of the abbreviation "JRPG", is there a reason for this?

A: Kind of yes and kind of no. I actually chose this username based on the types of games I prefer (being RPGs) and the first letter in my name (being a "J"). I didn't actually realize what my username sounded like until after I registered all my other accounts. Don't get me wrong though, I love a good JRPG, but such games are not always in English and make understanding the story or even what I'm supposed to do to be difficult.

Q : By the term "RPGs", is there a specific type or style you prefer?

A: Actually no, in the terms of "RPG" itself, I prefer all types. This can range from your standard "turn-based" JRPG to your more active "hack 'n' slash" ARPG and everything in between. For me, RPGs just feel more in-depth and personal than other games, as they tend to put you in the shoes and mind of the character themselves. However, that is not to say other games can't be personally associated, but many of them do lack that kind of aspect.

I mean, if I may be honest here, how many people play Sonic and go "if only I was a blue hedgehog that runs fast and destroys robots"? I mean, I get personal on a nostalgia level, but on a realization and life level, not so much.
Now, say you play Chrono Trigger, for many people, that game is relatable and in many ways, realistic and personal. You get to face moments and decisions you would (in some way) face in the real world.

Of course, not all RPGs are personal either, but most of them do hit on a personal level, introducing the player to points in the game where you have to make a tough decision or even a bad call just to save face overall.

In the end though, I prefer the RPGs that give you a blank character to mold into yourself and be optional with, in other words, a large number of open-world RPGs (such as Skyrim).

Although RPGs that have a predefined story are amazing and all, having options outside of the chosen story is an improvement.

Q : Do you play games that are not RPGs?

A: Of course, as should any gamer. I'm very open to gaming itself as a whole, but bear in mind, there are a limited number of gaming genres I'm actually good with. Although I do fancy a bit platformer action, my skills at them are absolutely awful, so I tend to play them rarely, if even at all.

For puzzle games, such as Chessmaster or Tetris, I am fairly decent. But, under pressure, I tend to get sloppy or disoriented, ending up failing as well. This also applies to games such as Pac-Man or Dig Dug.

For the racing genre of things, I'm alright at them also, but I'm a bit of a sore loser and rage quit pretty quickly after losing a few times.

With games of the FPS genre, I am also fairly decent, but rage almost instantly upon dying or missing a shot, so I try to avoid those as much as possible.

For simulation games, such as Farming Simulator, I honestly don't try in them and spend 99% of my time goofing off or breaking the rules of the game itself.

Then we have strategy and MOBA games, which I am pretty bad at (but not as bad as I am at platformers). I mean, I love playing games like DOTA or Starcraft, but at the same time, I don't work well with others and tend to do things my way, even if they clearly end in failure.

Now, if you bring to the table role playing games (including games such as D&D or Pathfinder), I can stay absolutely glued to it and will devote as many hours as possible (or available) as I can.

Furthermore, whether they be Dungeon Crawlers, MMORPGs, or even a simple text adventure, you can count that I will play them if I can. This also includes mobile RPG games, plug 'n' play RPGs, and everything in between.

Q : Do you consider yourself a retro gamer or a hybrid gamer?

A: I would like to call myself retro, but I kind of can't since I am willing to play newer consoles and games... But only for their RPGs. Outside of that, I don't play anything "new".

Q : What do you define as retro?

A: For me personally, retro is any and all consoles made before 2000. New Age would be consoles made past 2000 that are abandoned/dead, and Modern would be any consoles past 2000 that still have games being officially made for them.

However, PC games are always modern until that specific PC version is dead. This means, Windows Vista, Windows XP, and so forth are New Age, while Windows 98 and such are all Retro, with Windows 7 and up being Modern until no longer actively updated.

This would also apply to mobile games and phones.

Q : What are your thoughts on the whole RETRO vs. MODERN war amongst the gaming communities?

A: It's simple really... Grow up. Look, I love retro games unconditionally and will almost always defend them (even if I know I'm wrong), however, I also know that every generation of gaming isn't perfect or better than any other generation. Retro gaming is an amazing thing and is essentially the foundation for what games are today. If it wasn't for what we had back then, we wouldn't have anything now.

Over time, everything will become "retro" to someone somewhere eventually. For us, retro was the 90s, the time when 3D gaming barely existed and when we had bleeps and bloops and other noises which turned into memorable tunes.

Nowadays, everything is pretty much 3D, and the music is orchestrated by an actual band or musician. Sure, it isn't what we we're used to, but that doesn't make it bad.
I will say this though... If I was given a choice to own every retro console and their games versus owning every modern + new age console and their games, I wouldn't hesitate to pick retro.

I may only be in my 20s and to true retro gamers, I'm expected to not know what a ColecoVision is or what a Turbografx-16 is, but to the guy I am, these are timeless works of art. They are consoles that helped pave the way to the future we have now. Because of this, my appreciation and unconditional love for the retro generation will never faulter. I grew up playing Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo, it's who I am and who I will always be.

Q : What was the very first console and video game you remember playing?

A: Playstation (aka "PSX/PS1"), and as for the game, the very first video game I played, beat, or even seen for that matter was Final Fantasy VII. That being said, it is also my all-time #1 favorite video game for both the RPG genre and for gaming overall.

This does not mean I think any less of any other RPG (such as Final Fantasy VIII, Secret of Mana, or even The 7th Saga), all RPGs are beautiful and truly remarkable in my eyes.

But for me, Final Fantasy VII is the game that not only got me into RPGs, but into the retro generation overall. From there, I ended up playing The Legend of Dragoon (truly remarkable), then Chrono Trigger (absolutely amazing!), then Final Fantasy VI (so good, so unbelievably good), and much more.

Eventually, I became a bit obsessed with completing RPGs and began selling my other games and anything I could sell just to get another RPG.

At the end of it all, I can truthfully say I may have beaten (right, beaten? or should I have said beat?) most (if not all) RPGs from the following consoles below:

NES, SNES, N64, Sega Genesis/Megadrive, Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast, Playstation 2, Playstation Portable, Nintendo DS, Gamecube, Gameboy, Gameboy Color, and Gameboy Advance.

Of course, I most likely haven't beat (beaten? Beat? AHHH!) every game, but I have a large number of them under my belt and I'm proud to have done what I could so far.

Q : If and when you finally beat every RPG from those consoles, what's next?

A: I have no idea, I don't even own any working consoles anymore to begin with. Times are tough around and gaming isn't something I can do all the time anymore. But, although I use emulators, I can truthfully say I still have a working PS1 and PS2 with of course my top favorite RPGs for each of those consoles still working as well.

Q : Besides Final Fantasy VII, do you have any favorite RPGs?

A: That's a pretty long list my friend, but if I had to narrow it down, I'd say here are my top 5 (excluding Final Fantasy VII as my all-time most replayed RPG).

#1: The Legend of Dragoon & Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII
#2: Chrono Trigger & Final Fantasy VI
#3: Final Fantasy X-2 & Kingdom Hearts 2
#4: Final Fantasy VIII & Final Fantasy X
#5: Secret of Mana, Secret of Evermore, & Seiken Densetsu 3 [Secret of Mana 2]

Q : Is there anything at all about RPG games that bug you?

A: Yeah, mainly when the same game gets a different title which is the name of an already existing game. Like Final Fantasy VI being released as Final Fantasy III in the US. It irritates me to no end, so I had to get a translated JP version cause seeing it say "Final Fantasy III" when I load up Final Fantasy VI really messes with my OCD.

Same goes for Final Fantasy IV being released as Final Fantasy II, also irritates me to no end, so I got a translated JP version of that as well.

To avoid this most of the time, I'll usually just play the Advance or NDS versions, cause otherwise my OCD will go overboard.

Q : Anything else we should know?

A: I can't think of anything else, so feel free to drop a question below and I'll answer it. Keep in mind, asking me game specific questions like "who's the final boss in Chrono Trigger?" will get you no answer, simply because I can't remember every game I have played from start to finish. The only game I know by heart is Final Fantasy VII and even then, I'll still mess up cause my memory is pretty foggy most of the time.
