We all have problems. But a lot of the time,we don't care what happens when someone else is in trouble. The bystander effect is in full swing. How often would you be willing to jump in and help someone getting bullied and such when no one else will? Ponder.

Of all the things like sociopaths and elitists, burglars and thieves, corrupt politicians and lawyers... everything I hate, they all have something in common: they bully. They all abuse whatever power you allow them to have and take advantage of those of us with weaker wills for their personal gain. I might not be much physically, I may be untrained, but you can bank on me stepping in if I see someone getting pushed around and I won't hesitate to use everything at my disposal to break bullies down if it comes to it. I guess you could call me an anti bully.

I'll happily stay a bystander:

-If I want it to happen
-If they need to be taught how to deal with it themselves, in which case I'd offer advice rather than being the hero
-If they aren't actually being bullied and are just way too sensitive
-If someone else steps in first
-If it's pointless to try
-If it gives any negative effects on my life that would otherwise be difficult to handle
-If they wouldn't appreciate the help
-If they don't want the help

I'll step in:

-If it's someone I'm friends with
-If I know I can do something about it
-If it amuses me
-If no one else is going to try
-If it turns out to be serious
-If it doesn't waste my time
-If I benefit from it

I think that's pretty much it. Note that I follow these by the hypothetical spirit of the law rather than the letter of the law. It all depends on the circumstances, which I extensively calculate before taking action.

tl;dr being the hero is no good in these situations, be a sidekick and stand on the sidelines while only offering emotional and moral support, preferably anonymously

I have a great example. This summer one of my friends was hanging out on the shore of one river in my hometown which is a popular place for holding picnics and hanging out. At one point she noticed that one guy from a group sitting close by was making a scene and all of a sudden jumped in to the river, obviously drunk. The river is also really difficult to climb out of, especially if you're not entirely sober. Everybody was laughing at him and cheering him on but my friend noticed that after some time the guy was really struggling, he was going to drown. She looked around and nobody was doing anything. She realized that if she wasn't the one to take action nobody probably would in time. So my friend jumped into the river with the guy, which made everyone realize that this was no joking matter and they should also help. I don't know the specifics of what happened afterwards but the guy was saved and my friend got a special mention from the police department.

I really admire my friend for what she did, because I know that I would've sadly acted like everybody else and I'm ashamed for that: "I hope he's alright... Well I guess someone's going to do something. What could I possibly do?" In this case it needed just one little push to get everybody to act. Next time if something serious happens and I'm a witness of it I'll be sure to remember this story, and be more active.

I care when others are in trouble, but depending on the circumstances, I may sometimes keep quiet to observe what is going on before taking any action. If one just jumps into the fray without assessing the situation first, sometimes more people will actually end up getting hurt than if one had not acted at all. Most of the time, if it is indeed possible for me to help, I usually will.

I'm a believer that life should be a positive, affirming experience. If I see someone getting bullied or picked on, I'll intercede and stop things unless there is a firearm involved. I don't need to get in the way of two gang-bangers pulling out guns and knives. I'll let them sort things out.

But in generally, people have no good reason to harass each other. It shouldn't happen and I'm just as bad if I sit there and let it happen compared to going in and saying something. What's the worst thing that can happen? They make fun of me too? So what.

Standing up for others, especially when it is unpopular or it's many against one, builds your moral character and makes you stronger mentally and emotionally. That one person who's getting picked on will appreciate it. Maybe the bullies will give you grudging respect, like in Karate Kid. Even the girl who's off to the side watching will see you act bravely and heroically and later tell you that what you did was cool.

There's no loss in helping other people, especially with bullies. Wade in, stand up for everyone, don't bad mouth anything, and be active. That's what I do and I'm happy for what I stand for.
