Goombas...what poor creatures they are. Originally inhabitants of the Mushroom Kingdom, they defected to the darkside. Although they are practically helpless, and hardly pose a threat, they certainly can pose an inconvienence. These little guys appear nearly everywhere and have many variations and forms.

1. Goomba
2. Paragoomba
3. Goombalings (dropped by paragoombas
4. Galoombas (the strange goombas that appear in super mario world.)

In some paper mario games, they can have even more forms.

5. Spiked goombas (can't jump on unless you have a spike badge)
6. Spiked paragoombas
7. Gloombas (darker, tougher versions)
8. Paragloombas
9. Spiked Gloombas
10. Spiked paragloombas

Of course, there are some boss versions as well but I cannot remember the specific names. No matter what you do, the goombas don't actually attack on their own (unless you are in paper mario) Yet mario always stomps on these poor little guys. Sigh, the sad life of a goomba...

However, there were a few goombas to be spared from mario's wrath. Goombario and his family in paper mario, and Goombella and the professor from Paper mario: 1000 year door.

But everone else gets the boot...of course goombas are not exactly the brightest creatures. I mean, they never pay attention to where they are going and mindless walk off platforms, into lava, into water, sinking sand, or any other hazard. I'd be willing to bet that these guys don't have the longest of life spans. Perhaps mario knows this and that is why he does not seem to care about killing all these harmless guys.

"I'd be willing to bet that these guys don't have the longest of life spans"
Few things that I read make me literally laugh out loud, but that did. Lol

Really I've been thinking of making a theory thread about this for a while now. I so want to go into that here, but I won't. Suffice to say, yes the goombas and even koopas (minus Bowser and the koopalings) seem to be perfectly harmless creatures and never even actively attack Mario, not even after he jumps on them (koopas) and they come back out of their shells. They just go back to walking around and completely forgive the offense. And in New Super Mario Bros. They even dance to the music, but Mario decides to throw fire at them or shove them off cliffs (or how about that poor unlimited lives trick koopa? Aspirin anyone?). And what's worse is that the game rewards us for doing these things. It's like Super Mario games are actually cartoony genocide simulators.

You know, to be honest, I've never felt sorry for Goombas, because I always looked at their faces, and they were grouchy and grumpy and mean looking and angry and all of that stuff, so I was just like, "Bro, what did I ever do to you? You're looking at me like you want to fight," to the first one, and it escalated to "So what, I murdered your friends and family and now you're mad at me? They came at me man!"

But now that I think about it, I didn't even really get anything out of killing those Goombas, and they were enslaved by a gigantic mixture thing of a dragon, tortoise, and a dinosaur called Bowser and his army. I now feel bad for killing those poor, miserable Goombas and not just giving them a chance, going around, and liberating them from the power of Bowser. Because honestly, who knows if they were even really trying to kill me? Maybe when they touch something it's just a natural defensive reaction to attack so that they don't get eaten by birds or something like that?

Way to make me feel like a horrible person, but guys, we should start trying, at least, to spare each and every Goomba that we can, because you never know what that Goomba's been going through. His family is probably in a horrible prison camp headed by one of the Bowser Jr.s or something along those lines, and we just slaughter then senselessly.

So therefore I say that we should never kill them again. Let them live in peace!

Lexatom : Game Theory's video on Mario being a sociopath? Nah, my theory is about the koopas, goombas, etc. Now I just hope it doesn't turn out to be one they covered before and I didn't know it. Lol

Eirinn : I've watched all of the mario episodes from game theory...unless there is something that youtube won't show me...but there is not one like that. By the way, I absolutely love just stepping back from games and making unique scenarios out of them. So if you got a theory, be sure to tell me.I will be all over it!

This was hilarious to read in certain parts lol. It's awesome when some one can integrate some humor into their articles / bios while still presenting all the information professionally, and you did a very good job of it.

I really hope you continue to do more of these, as I've enjoyed the last couple you've posted so far

It even says in the manual that the Goombas were once allies to the Mushroom Kingdom, but turned against them. So in that regard they are traitors. And we all know what happens to traitors. Koopas were the invaders and populated the landscape with bricks,? boxes, plants and such from the citizens of the Mushroom Kingdom. So even though they seem passive, they are enemies. And yes,Mario is actually killing 'citizens' of the Mushroom Kingdom when he breaks blocks or hits the ? blocks.

But I would think the real issue is Peach. She has lost her kingdom more times than a blind person loses their house keys. She has proven to be inept as a monarch and if the fungi citizens actually had a brain they would have her deposed. But,for some strange reason they keep her around.

I know,we are looking way too deep at this and I blame Game Theory for this, lol.

Oldschool777 : A probable reason for peach still holding the crown. Maybe because she's one of the few humans  in the mushroom kingdom?Reasonably a human being would be at the top of the line when it comes to ruling and such. Besides, I don't see too many toads offering to take the job...Lol. (Also I did know about the goombas being traitors. Didn't really think of it that way before. But still, something to ponder.) You never know it just might change the way we play the game...

Titan127 : ZSo because one has had a hard lot in life, and ergo...is a very fierce creature, or human, and just won't smile? Does this seem like a goomba to you? One someone would mistrust, or kill? Or, quite possibly, maybe Mario Jumpman Mario is a HOMICIDAL MANIAC who don't give them goombaris a second chance... but that's just, of course a theorem, amiright?

Well, the Toads would probably do about as good a job as she is doing. They will not fight back and rely on their only source of fight;Mario and Luigi.

Oldschool777 : Think about it...what do toads do the most? Run, Hide, and cower. If these guys were in charge, the mushroom kingdom would be defeated so quickly, even mario might not be able to stop it. Also, Princess Toadstool/Peach is the only one with the ability to undo Bowser's magic. (this coming straight from the original manual.) If you have doubts about Toadstool and peach being the same person (Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World give the name Toadstool while showing the character we commonly refer to as peach.) So, that would be why she is still ruler of the fair mushroom kingdom. Sorry I did not get it right the first time. I forgot about a few things...

But still she has lost her kingdom repeatedly and gets kidnapped on a regular basis. And we agree that the Toads are virtually useless. I mean, maybe the Mushroom Kingdom would be better off in Bowser's (King Koopa) hands. Sure, his troops are not much better, but at least he has troops.

Maybe a bit,but it is still relevant to the original topic. But still, they are the invaders and Mario must get past them somehow and the Mushroom Kingdom is not exactly a tech marvel or even bothered to give Mario armor or a sword.
