Hello! So I’ve been a ninja turtles fan for a few years now and the games have been rather lack-luster since I got in to it. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the shadows (The game, not the new movie) was bearable at best. So when I heard that a new ninja turtles game made my platinum was in the works I was quite excited for it. I knew that platinum had made really good games in the past. I also played a bit of transformers devastation, a game that I really did enjoy. Was it any good? Well, let’s find out: Graphics: 9/10 Probably the best thing about this game is its awesome graphics. Like transformers devastation it is cel shaded. And it looks gorgeous; hands down the best looking ninja turtles game of all time. One complaint you might have about the graphics is the environment. A lot of the game is played in the sewers and sewers aren’t going to look very flashy. But I didn’t really mind because the sewers are the sewers and it’s supposed to be dark. When it does go out of the sewers it is very lively and feels pretty big. Let’s talk about the character models, the best thing about the graphics for sure. The ninja turtles aren’t based on a specific version of the turtles, rather it’s a mix of all the popular versions. They don’t look incredibly detailed but they do look very nice. About the cut scenes. The cut scenes are definitely prevalent and they look fantastic. The cel shading really helps the cut scenes here.
Gameplay: 6/10 This is where the game falls flat. It’s a hack and slash, but could also be classified as a beat em’ up. You go through repetitive missions like defusing bombs, bringing a weird ball to a certain location, etc. Until you ultimately fight a boss.
The gameplay can be too chaotic at times and some of it is a farce. To give you an example of this, in the first training stage it teaches you to dodge and parry, but in the end I barely ever found myself using it, and you can go through the game just fine without it. Now about the game being chaotic: You have to play as all turtles at once, you change character by pressing LT (L2 on PlayStation) then use the d-pad to pick a turtle, you have to change pretty often and in a difficult fight the turtles will get knocked out a lot which means you’re changing characters constantly Speaking of your turtles getting knocked out, the other turtles can revive a knocked out turtle but you have a time limit of a few seconds. This makes and other reasons make the difficulty too easy at times. Speaking of difficulty!
Difficulty 4/10 This game is too easy. There is one main contributing reason to this: your characters aren’t out permanently. Well, they could be. But that is only if all 4 of your turtles get knocked out. You see when there is still 1 or more left the knocked out character(s) are back at the lair eating pizza and getting health back and eventually they will be back fighting again. This results in me almost never dying. I saw in the steam reviews that the easy difficulty was one of the main complaints about this game and I can see why. There is an extra hard difficulty but you have to unlock it by beating the regular hard difficulty. So, yeah, this game is definitely too easy, especially on the normal difficulty.
Depth: 3/10 Man, this game is short. Not only is it really short, it also barely has any game modes. It has online that I wasn’t able to play because I have no friends that own this game. (I cri) One major issue that I have with this game is that there is no local co-op. The most fun I had with previous ninja turtles games like turtles in time was playing the local co-op with friends but for some reason they decided to leave it out in this one. The regular story mode is also way too short, and like previously mentioned you can get a harder difficulty if you beat it but like some other things in this game, it’s a farce. It just makes it feel longer than it actually is. There are 9 stages, all with an end-boss from the franchise.
These include: Stage 1: Bebop Stage 2: Rocksteady Stage 3: Slash Stage 4: Karai Stage 5: Armaggon Stage 6: Wingnut Stage 7: general Krang Stage 8: Mega Krang Stage 9: Shredder If you beat all of them it slightly changes the second time you play it but it’s really not worth it just to play the same game again, just with some changes.
Sound: 8/10 I must say, this game’s music is definitely enjoyable, and while I wouldn’t want to listen to it outside of the game it fits the game well and does make the experience a little more bearable. The sound effects are what you would expect, punching sounds, the turtles saying some one-liners, etc. I mentioned the cut scenes and there is actually some good voice acting here. If I was to nit-pick when the turtles move it sounds a bit off, almost like they’re made of paper or something.
Addictiveness: 3/10 This game isn’t very addictive. I usually found myself stopping after just one stage because it was just really repetitive and while the boss battles were somewhat addicting, you had to sit through those missions before getting to the boss. I don’t want this to drag so I’ll just say this: Its repetitive and not addicting what so ever.
Story: 7/10 The story is your usual Shredder and krang wanting power storyline. It’s not bad and it isn’t really important. I could go more in detail about the story but really the story is just what I previously mentioned, your usual turtles storyline. The dialogue was actually not bad at all and I enjoyed some of the one liners the turtles said.
Overall: 4.8/10 I do not recommend this game. Even if you are massive fan of the turtles I wouldn’t tell you to pick it up. While the sound and the music are definitely good things, most of the rest just isn’t. Its repetitive, the gameplay is not very interesting and the game is way too short, which could actually be seen as a positive now that I think about it. Hello! On serious note now xD this wasn't that bad of a review bro, it's just when a game isn't good your writing may not feel as great either to yourself since just seems short and pointless at times but at least you're letting us know why it's bad instead of just: "not good don't play, PEACCEEEE!! *end of review* " Still would said nice job ima, and even if may not seem like one of your best/better ones, could still be enjoyable to others (how I felt with one of mine last year) On serious note now xD this wasn't that bad of a review bro, it's just when a game isn't good your writing may not feel as great either to yourself since just seems short and pointless at times but at least you're letting us know why it's bad instead of just: "not good don't play, PEACCEEEE!! *end of review* " Still would said nice job ima, and even if may not seem like one of your best/better ones, could still be enjoyable to others (how I felt with one of mine last year) |

Oh man, I nearly bought this game. Thankfully I didn't have the money when it first launched and I saw the reviews...yeah they all agreed with you.
The no local co-op was a deal breaker for me and most other people I know of because hey, what's a Turtles game without friends? This game should have no trouble running local co-op on modern systems, but the developers claimed it just wasn't possible. The only thing that could logically have kept this from being possible is a deadline set by the publisher I would say. Sad really. Thanks for making this review: it settled the matter for me once and for all. Thanks for the review. It was informative and done pretty well. I appreciate you telling us WHY the game was bad,not just a broad stroke opinion. It is disappointing since the maker,Platinum, did Transformers: Devastation and they hit a huge home run with that game. It just follows the usual TMNT curse since the PS2 days, pretty game, bland gameplay. Kinda like how I felt with Front Mission Evolved for PS3. |

Eirinn : I read that online co-op is possible. So why isn't local? I don't get it. Yeah I got this game immediately because I knew platinum and I'm a dumb kid that'll buy any game with the turtles' heads on it. Needless to say it was the wrong decision. And no problem glad I didn't make you get the game. Oldschool777 : Yeah, I agree. Transformers: devastation was such a good game so i'm honestly sad that they messed it up so bad with the turtles. To my knowledge they didn't specify why it wasn't possible, but it sounded like an issue with hardware limitations. With local (split screen anyway) you have to be able to render all character and object models twice, track two cameras, and track distance from 3D audio to the player's character twice for each sound (couldn't make an explosion that player one was next to sound up close for both players if player two is half a level away), etc. Basically with a lot of new games developers try to push the hardware limits to the max and rendering all of those top notch things twice at one time would either be impossible or would result in a huge frame rate drop and so extreme lag.
This game though comes nowhere near the limits of PS4's or Xbox One's power so split screen shouldn't have been a problem. And if it was, make the two players share a single screen like say, Rayman Legends. Problem solved. It really makes no sense. All I can guess is either the publisher didn't give them enough time or enough funding, or the developer (or publisher) wanted to move more copies so they forced two copies to be bought in order to make co-op possible. The real shame is that local co-op might have saved this game and made it more enjoyable. I could see that bumping it from a 4.8 to a 6.
