I don't think anyone who's reading this review needs to know what SMB3 is. It's one of the most recognizable games of all time, and also one of the best. As you know, however, with success comes imitators. Mario clones, Sonic clones, and clones of all kinds of different successful games are pretty common, and they're pretty terrible, with a few notable exceptions. This one, however, doesn't even attempt to mask the fact that it's inspired by Mario: in fact, it tries to be as similar to SMB3 as possible to make itself look like a GBC version of SMB3. Can they succeed at that goal? I don't think so, considering that it's another game made by those wacky Chinese pirates.

This game's graphics have zero originality to them. They're entirely taken from SMB3, in an attempt to make the game look like SMB3. The only difference is that they've all been given different colors, and they all look eye-searing with the new color scheme. The developers apparently forgot that the GBC can display the color white, because the sky and note blocks are all green for some odd reason.

Anyway, when you start the game up, you're greeted with some of the worst music I've ever heard and the SMB3 title screen with the word SPECIAL clumsily edited into it. If you actually decide to push start after hearing that music, you're rewarded with even worse music and a world map with five levels to enter. That's right, only five levels. How many levels did SMB3 have again...? I think it was somewhere close to OVER 100, last time I checked!

So, you enter the first level as soon as possible to get away from the horrible ear-scraping music, and you're given slightly less awful music that's still terrible to listen to. The first level appears to be based off of the first level of SMB3 at first, but they decided to add onto the original level for reasons that I still don't understand. Unfortunately, their level design is just as good as their music and graphics, which makes the added portions of gameplay a chore to play through.

As I tried to play the game, I felt just how awful the controls are. This game also has the worst controls I've ever used in any game, ever. They're incredibly stiff, and yet slippery at the same time. It feels like you're forcing Mario to move, and when you land on the ground after a jump, he'll continue walking on the ground for a bit. The controls also feel very unresponsive - if you try to jump while turning around or if you try to immediately turn after pushing a direction, it's significantly delayed. This has cost me so many lives.

The levels aren't very different from one another. Each level feels very similar, and the "original" level design sticks out like a sore thumb alongside the original game's level design. If you were unlucky enough to pick level 4, however, that's the level that's entirely custom-made. It's also a jumping level where you have to platform on tiny blocks and avoid enemies with very little space to spare. You'll die and die, over and over again, simply because the controls don't obey what you're pushing!

Apparently, even the Chinese pirates who developed this game didn't have the patience to play through level 4 on their own, and they were the people who made it! How do I know this? Well, if you actually have the patience and endurance to make it to the end of level 4, the level doesn't end properly and you're stuck in the level until you run out of lives. If they couldn't be bothered to play their own game, what business did they have trying to sell it?!

This is honestly one of the worst games I've ever played. There isn't a SINGLE thing they did right! The graphics are stolen and poorly recolored, the music and sound is ear-scraping, the controls literally don't respond to what buttons you press, and the game isn't even properly finished! I'm sure you can tell why this game doesn't deserve any of your time.

nice review, That is the problem with pirated games sometimes is a lot of times the makers mess things up big time. There are some Mega Man games out there that are like this. Some hacks are good and some are well like you described.

tornadocam : Thank you for the comment! Yeah, those wacky Chinese pirates have a bad habit of messing things up when it comes to creating their own games instead of just repackaging other games. That's kinda the way things work with custom content: some of it ends up being amazing and some of it ends up being crap that isn't fun to play.
