What I noticed from most of the *idiots* at school, is that:

• They are unaware of most video games dating before the Xbox 360's launch, besides long-running series or GTA.
• They generally bash anything made before the most current releases for 'being old and boring'.

Obviously this is not true of some people, but in general, kids/teens are only aware of current releases and also the most popular ones at that.

(in the year group below me though - year 8 - people are more aware, but aren't aware of some of the other things in this post)

What's funny is how they totally obsess over one thing and then the next year they'll bash the previous release.

My thesis seems to be: too much popular media and YouTube influence. Everything searched up is the latest release for a game, by a very popular (99.8% of a chance the channel or site is from the US) channel. Other things are buried below the search results/media, making it harder to find things. In fact, you NEVER hear of anything other than E3. The other ones aren't ever cropped up in conversations, even over in the UK, no one seems to give a toss.

In the future there will be no such thing as a Gaming PC, only Gaming Smartphones which only have GTA and COD on them, leaving the rest of the community excluding the mass-media-minded youth out of the way.

That's how things work, and its not just for games, its for everything because things change. Think about how a teen will react when they see the terminator movie that just came out and then the 1st one? I for one hate the 1st one, can't stand the way it looks.

Same thing will happen with series, do you think people who played gta IV and v will play the 1st one that's all pixels and top down? Older gamers grew up with the games that came out when they were alive, and they began playing games as they came out, the same thing is going on with kids and teens now, its just that they start further down the line.

If I started playing Pokemon with X or even Diamond, I would not want to play Red and Blue, and I'm sure there are people who grew up with PS1, and the older games who don't like the ones that came out before that, like even older ones.

I get this a lot... Kids talking about some Minecraft mod, and the mod is based on some game, but the kids have no idea about the game it's based off of. They just assume it's some made up mod with new weapons. This was kind of an annoying thing 10 years ago, but it's even more so now, with all the insane amount of youtube stuff. The comedian Bo Burnham has a song pretty much bashing youtube, while doing a performance for youtube. XD

   Kids these days just don't appreciate good games, because they've been spoiled by HD graphics, they won't even consider playing older games. It's sad, man... The kids on this site are cool though. They appreciate good games, regardless of graphics, as anyone who considers themselves a gamer should.

I agree that Youtube does not help with this quick obsolescence of technology - South Park made a very good episode on The subject last season.

However, considering The accelerated development of consoles and The equally accelerated development of graphics and other features, I say it should be no surprise if people get bored with last year's stuff (just look at fashion). When I entered primary school, The Sega Genesis was just going out while The Nintendo was THE gaming console. When my oldest "second-wave" cousin entered primary school The PS2 was out.

That's definitely the case for many of the students I know in my school. The only games they ever know or talk about is games that are very recent and games that have HD graphics. They also bash on classic games. Hey, back when those classic games were new those graphics and gameplay (some of them) were the best quality around!

Even though I'm only 15, most of the games I like are games from 20+ years ago. A lot of the modern games I see now I highly dislike and want no part of seeing or discussing them.

PacmanandMariofan : Maybe they bash them because they are too hard. I read this article once saying that today's youth is incapable of getting through the first world in Super Mario Bros. Hell, even I can do it and I am not a Mario player AT ALL.

Luigi442wii : do not forget that supply and demand also applies to gaming. YOU might think that the design is sloppy and "only made for profit" (which games are not, anyway?) but it is apparently supplying a demand of some sort.

Also, the liking of "older" games is something you learn. Beyond the nostalgia factor for me, I just love to see the evolution of gaming. Whenever I do a review I talk about how the graphics were for the time, but also compared to other game of the series if it applies. There is A WORLD of difference between Dragon Warrior and Dragon Warrior IV, and a visual person like me can easily see that.

janus : That's sad. Even during my first time playing Super Mario Bros. 6 years ago, I was able to get through the first world without many issues. I think it only took me about half an hour since I was getting used to the game.

Most modern games seem to be harder since there's less of a pattern to them than classic games (for the most part).

I always like to compare this with TV shows. Some shows have went on for years but people can't stand the quality of the first seasons because they're so used to the quality shown nowadays. Same thing with long running video game series (pokemon, GTA, mario, etc.).

The truth is that those games are in fact old, and the reason they get judged as boring is because we aren't motivated to play them to begin with, after comparing them to modern games.

The only thing people here know about is COD and GTA and thats it. Where i live people who play more games than that are usually considered boring or losers but hey thats the south..... a place of animal killing obsessed rednecks

PacmanandMariofan : I daresay it is even PATHETIC. Sure, you might need a few tries to get comfortable with the controls, but the game is so simple that I usually could get to world 5 without help or cheats.

Furret : True. Unless you experienced the game/the console before hand, playing it will seem out of place. For example, I do wonder if I will ever try the old Atari games, which I never played.

janus : I agree. People can be such experts at shooting games where there's no pattern and your main strategies are watching out for people around you and using the right weapon. Yet they can't beat games that are way simpler to play than that XD

My friend thinks Super Mario 64 is one of the worst games of all time. Because of its graphics. He has also an example of what you call the "idiots" that don't know anything about anything before the XBOX 360.

Or like when my friend saw M. Bison in Wreck-It Ralph and thought it was Captain Falcon. They don't look a thing alike..
