Is it just me or does this seem almost impossible?  There are so many diagonal platforms that if you misstep you'll fall into the abyss.  And yet, in Mario 64 DS you control him with the D-pad, right?  Was that any better?

I've beaten Super Mario 64 with all 120 stars with a keyboard so many times, and once you get quick with the keyboard controls, it's very possible. You do have to be pretty skilled at aiming with the arrow keys, though. It started out pretty difficult for me.

I think the DS version's controls weren't any better, and I've found them to be even harder than using a keyboard.

I played the DS version a lot a few years ago and didn't run into any big troubles. The bottom screen can be used for more precise movement such as walking or turning slightly, so you aren't just limited to the D pad for movement. Any time I died, it felt like my fault, not the control's.
