Hey, I'm NintendoFan388, and welcome to my first review of my all time favorite game: Earthbound! First of all, before we start, I'd like to say that I have played through the whole game, and I am including no bias in this review (Okay, maybe a little). Also, this review may contain opinions. So without further ado, let's begin!
Graphics: 10
Well, I've personally liked 8 and 16 bit graphics more than anything else, and these graphics to me are amazing. They're smooth, colorful, and impressive for their time. They never lag, and they're still fun to look back on even to this day. With all that gathered together, it gets my overall 10!
Sound: 10
Where do I begin? This music is outstanding, one of my favorite soundtracks in video games, and is personally what I think the best soundtrack on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (Yes, better than the Mega Man X games!)! Their are a lot of memorable tracks in this game, my personal favorite being "Pokey Means Business!". Overall, it's a nostalgic soundtrack and it gets my 10.
Addictiveness: 10
Seriously, this game is more addictive than anything I've ever seen before. Everyday, when I woke up, I would say to myself, "Man, I can't wait to play Earthbound today!". It's one of those RPGS that you can come back to anytime and you will not being able to stop playing for weeks. I can't tell you how many times I've played this before, and it's because this game has so much replayability it's almost abnormal. With all of this, it gets yet another 10.
Story: 8
To be honest, this game didn't have much if a story, but the amount of colorful characters makes up for that. Of course you have Ness, Paula, Jeff, and Poo, who are amazing on their own, but there are way more other characters, each one different from the rest. Some include Pokey Minch, Tony, Dr. Andonuts, Apple Kid, Orange Kid, The Runaway Five, and so many more! With these characters taken into account, it gets an 8 overall.
Depth: 8
Now, don't get me wrong, this game is ENORMOUS, and it would take a speedrunner at least an hour to beat the entire thing, but the main problem I have is that after a while it gets a bit repetitive. If you play for way too long, you think of it as "Yeah yeah, beat up enemies, defeat Sanctuary Guardian, get closer to the end of the game.". Lather, Rinse, Repeat. For this reason, it gets an 8.
Difficulty: 5
Even though this game is AMAZING, it actually isn't that hard. Once you've got used to the game's tactics, you can breeze through the game. At one point, I even got Ness to level 90. Although it can get difficult at some parts, it's a bit too easy. I think it should have had a Hard Mode after you beat the entire game, but it doesn't happen. This exact reason is why it gets a 5.
Overall: 10
Overall, this game is pure excellence and is absolutely outstanding. It is my all time favorite video game and I'd recommend it to anyone who likes video games, even if they don't like RPGS, this game will definitely get them into the genre. For all these reasons, this game gets my overall 10.
Thanks for reading!
