Hey, everyone me monster here back with another game review! This time it’s for

WCW Mayhem, for the PS1 and N64. I will be covering the PS1 version in this review.

The way I came across this game was while browsing through wrestling games. This was In November when vizzed was uploading all the PS1 games.

I didn’t play it right away, I waited a little. Recently, however I played the game and quite a bit.

The game was released in 1999, around the time when WCW was really getting messy, and was pretty awful.

Can the same be said about this game? Well, let’s find out!

Graphics: 9/10

Now, I already said this in my Crash team racing review, but games from the PS1, and N64 era looked great back in the day, but just look plain bad now. But, this game like crash team racing, still looks very crisp today.

The animation is really fantastic, a lot of wrestling games from this era had a weird problem with their animation. It would be very stiff. Heck, a lot of the PS2 wrestling games had this problem.

The wrestlers all look like their real life counter-parts. Moves look very devastating. The arenas are really well detailed, especially backstage, and in the parking lot. Which I will talk more about later, by the way.

The graphics are overall very solid and realistic. This game is really great looking for a game from it’s era, and that it’s a wrestling game makes it even more special.

The crowd looks very basic, though. And that is holding it back from a 10.

Story: N/A

There is no story, but like WWF Superstars 2, you can just make your own one by using something that is called fantasy. And, there is a mode where you win the championship. So you can imagine them doing interviews, and that is actually kind of fun.

Addictiveness: 7/10

This game is pretty addicting. It’s fun and has a lot of wrestlers to play as. The gameplay is fine, but it seems a little lacking There are no issues with the controls, though.

I definitely thought that the quest for the best mode, was dragged on a little too much.

Each character does have their own moves, but they also share a lot. I don’t have a big problem with that, to be very honest.

You have a create a wrestler option, which is truthfully a little disappointing. But it’s fun and, making your character does add at least a little bit to the addictiveness, even though it is a little lacklustre

The controls are absolutely fine, they are responsive quick and fun.

However, I will admit. If you are not a wrestling fan, then you won’t like this. If you’re a WCW fan, this is right up your alley! Now, WCW had another critically acclaimed video game, called WCW/NWO Revenge, Which this game gets compared to.

I won’t say that it’s as good as that game, but it’s still fun.

Depth: 7/10

This game has a good amount of things to do in it.

You have an obvious Exhibition mode

A main event mode

A PPV mode (Which is useless now, but I’ll get in to that later)

Create a wrestler

And quest for the best.

The Exhibition mode is just a mode to make your own basic normal matches. It’s pretty basic.

The main event mode, is a mode where you can pick match types. This is pretty much the same as exhibition, but with different match types.

Now the PPV mode is useless now, you could put in a code to get real life PPV matches, However this only lasted 3 months.

And Ultimately , you have the quest for the best mode. This is the main 1 player mode. You pick a wrestler (Or your own created wrestler) And win all the championships, and defend them against number one contenders. It is fun, but like I said before. Boring and a little dragged out.

Difficulty: 6/10

The difficulty is alright. Easy is, just that easy. And hard, is that hard.

However, I will say. With many wrestling games of this era, someone that is new to the wrestling games of that era  will lose very miserably. No matter if there is a difficulty setting. So the fact that they have an easy mode, and that It’s actually easy, makes it a lot better.

It eases you in the game, and is great. The hard mode is for players that want to get a real challenge, and it’s quite fun.

In the quest for the best mode, you can get really nervous if defending a championship. This makes the experience a whole lot of fun. But, that really only counts for the first  20 matches.

Big wrestlers like Hulk Hogan are harder to beat, than someone like say Konnan, Which makes sense.

Sound: 9/10

The sound of this game is really great. Not the music, the music is just recycled music from the WCW shows, which isn’t bad.

But what really is awesome, is the commentary from Bobby Heenan and tony tony schiavone. I especially love the commentary from Heenan, witty and hilarious as you would see on TV.

Tony schiavone does his job well, too.

The crowd also sounds great. They respond to big moves, and unlike most wrestling games from this era, they chant specific chants because of the actions in the ring, which is just great.

But, the commentary is really fantastic, Heenan made me laugh a lot. In the N64 version, however, they removed the commentary from Bobby Heenan, the commentary from tony schiavone is still around, but no heenan in the N64 version. That is really, really stupid. It’s the best part of the sound by far!

Memories: N/A

I don’t have any memories of this game, besides seeing this in the RGR to be honest.

Overall: 7/10

This game is good. It really is. I like it. The gameplay is fun, but gets boring after a while.

The controls are pretty much perfect.

There is one thing I have not touched on yet, and that is that  the collision detection has problems, no serious problems, but still worth noting in my opinion.

The commentary is just fantastic, crowd is realistic and fun to listen to. And has a good amount of moves to use.

Overall I really think this game is worth checking out for wrestling fans. If you’re not a wrestling fan, than this is not for you. If you’re a WCW fan this game is packed with contend and completely worth checking out!

Well, that was my review everyone! I hoped you liked it!!

As Sonic said, I imagine finding relevant things to say about this game was not easy. You did nicely there.

I would offer two negative critiques though: The breathing that I praised so highly last time was a little too prevalent here. By that I mean there was a little too much open space (line breaks). A few times there was a line break where it wasn't needed, but I will say that there wasn't too much technical detail to bog us down which is a big plus still.

I would also suggest leaving the summons out of the review itself though, as it makes it look less professional.

All in all, you did well, monster. Keep on writing, you're getting better all the time.

Good review on the game! I always confused this game with WCW/NWO Revenge. I would assume that WCWNWO Revenge is the bad game of the two then? I haven't tried out this game nor WCW/NWO Revenge but hopefully I am able to play it on my laptop one day.
