Microsoft gave a press conference today, giving some interesting details about Windows 10. I have a video link from the tech website, Cnet, to highlight some of the features that Windows 10 will be providing.



Here are the main bullets from the announcement:
  • Windows 10 is free to upgrade from Windows 7 and above
  • Cortana voice control will be on anything that has Windows 10
  • New web browser called Spartan will be used to replace Internet Explorer
  • Set up for HoloLens, a "hologram" (technically augmented reality) technology
  • Xbox One games can be streamed from a computer
  • Surface Hub, a 4K touchscreen used for meetings and possibly teaching.

What features on here sound the most interesting to you? Do you think these are good advancements from Microsoft?

To me, the HoloLens is the most interesting news that I've seen from them. Sure, I would prefer the time to come when actual holograms are in use instead of putting stuff on my head in order to see these images, but this is going towards that direction and I say the future is now.

I'm actually quite excited for this. I kind of knew from the get go Windows 8 would be garbage however I have a feeling they've learned from their mistakes.

I'm not sure I'll be able to afford holo lens but then again it feels like a fad to me.

I'm curious about the Xbox games as well but if they're streamed "from" a computer, It looks like the games will have to be on the computer to play on the Xbox if I'm understanding that correctly.


Other than that, I'm interested in all the new features but a tad cautious about the new browser. I don't mind a new browser but I know it's going to be buggy & untrustworthy at first.

I'm really excited about this! I have Windows 8.1, but I really can't see why people hate it... But, Windows 10 just sounds plain awesome! I will definitely look to upgrade when it comes out later this year! 

Things I look for: Cortana, this is the Microsoft answer to Siri, except as I understand it, it's built into the new Web Browser, Spartan. I hope that it goes beyond just the browser!

In terms of WIndows 10, I'm mostly interested in Windows 10 Mobile, which was stated that some Lumia phones running 8.1 will be updated to 10, though I don't know if mine would work.

Wow, this is the first I'm hearing/reading of the new Windows 10 features and I have to say that I'm impressed. Now, we'll see in the future if Microsoft continues to impress me, but either way, I think I'll be waiting a while before I upgrade from Windows 7. I couldn't honestly care less about the voice control or Xbox One features, but the rest sounds pretty cool. I know that the big ticket item here is the holograms, but you can see in the picture that it's going to require some sort of headgear, and Oculus Rift is already making something similar. What I'm most interested in is the new web browser, I really hope they come through with a great web browser this time.

Running win10 tech preview on my laptop. For the most part its the same as 8.1. There is no cortana (at least in Australia) and no xbox game streaming yet. Though the current xbox app looks promising. Some of the UI windows (minimise, close, maximise) buttons on some windows, maybe only apps, look hideous... But work in progress.

Not too excited about the projection stuff as I think they may have been using some trickery with what we seen of hololens on stage when the lady built the quad copter.
