There are good games, then there are great games. All things considered,
Mario Kart 64 is a great game in my opinion. It hasn't aged quite as
well as I hoped, but it's still a solid game on it's own. It's a
fantastic second ride through the Mushroom Kingdom. So strap in, because
this is gonna be a fast ride!

Graphics: 7/10

The graphics are fantastic!...As far as the Nintendo 64 is
concerned. As for today's standards, it's sub-par. But graphics aren't
everything in a game. This is the second Mario Kart ever made. And the
first one probably broke the SNES if you played it for too long.
But, being the first for Nintendo's first 3D game system, it was
revolutionary. It's great for 64's standards. And it gets you in the
mood for some classic Mario gaming.

Sound: 9/10

The sound is actually REALLY good, by both the N64, and today's
standards. The first thing you hesar when you turn the game on is our
favorite man in a red suit(Mario) yell "Welcome to Mario Kart!" It may
catch you off guard, but it just shows you that
THEYGOTVOICESOMYGOODNESS, it was...More exciting in those days. But,
yeah, the voices for the characters are pretty good actually. Not just
Mario, but everyone. And the background music...The background music for
those levels are still some of my favorites period. It's well crafted,
and fits each level perfectly. Okay, maybe DK's Jungle Parkway is a bit
too ambient, but that just gets you thinking of the underwater levels of
DK Country if you think too hard.

Story: 0/10

Story? Pffft! Who needs that? Am I right? This game is so edgy that
it took the story and THREW IT AND MADE WARIO SPIN OFF THE
RACETRACK!!!!!!!!!!

Depth: 2/10

There isn't much depth to this game. You only got your 8 characters,
your default pipe karts, and 16 courses to race through. Although there
is a Mirror Mode if you do well enough in the Grand Prix's. But that's
it in terms of depth.

Difficulty: 5/10

Mario Kart is a cruel mistress, even back in the N64. And the AI is
no slacker either. You're in for a challenge if you go into 150 cc mode.
But honestly, what Mario Kart isn't like that? It's set the bar for AI
patterns to come! Cruel AI, or just bad luck will hinder you. But, you
may get a lucky break! Maybe you'll rip through the competition! YOU!
CAN! DO! IT!

The only thing that really makes this stand out from the other games
is, all the characters still have different stats. But you can't see
what's different. Like, Mario and Luigi are balanced, Toad, Yoshi, and
Peach are light with good acceleration, and Bowser, Wario, and Donkey
Kong are heavyweights, who can make lightweights spin out by bumping
into them. But what can you do to hold back this onslaught?! Well,
nothing you haven't done before, really. Well, you can take advantage of
the Banana Bunch, and tote not three, but FIVE Banana Peels behind you!
Muahaha!
All in all, it's a pretty fun game. It's worth at least a try. You actually can play it here on Vizzed!

Alright review, not bad but not the best but hey, it's above the requirements.

What I came here to say... The title of the thread.

Oh the puns.

They hurt.

Yeah, I've played this game and it's really good! The Al is really weird, I often had Donkey Kong racing just behind me, then hittting a banana, then somebody hit him with a shell, but then he caught up to all players except for me. So he can go faster than the other players who race at top speed but not past you? Weird...

The tracks are really good though, especially when comparing to the SNES version. Good review User!

I have to say, this review made me want to play Mario Kart 64 (I'm going to play it right now actually ). I never had the same feeling as you did about the sound since I started playing video games a little after the GameCube came out (I was probably 4 or 5 ). I can imagine the feeling though xD. I like what you put about the story . It wasn't needed, but it made me laugh . I understand where you came from about the graphics, have nothing to say there. What are you talking about difficulty!!! Mario Kart 64 is literally one of the hardest Mario Karts when you are playing on 150cc! Haha, then again the last time I played it was when I was 10 or 11... Anyway, last thing I have to put here is that Yoshi is my main bro. I use him for every game he's in. Peace .

Edit: Post 100, woop! Haha, I had to put this in . Peace again .

juuldude : Yeah, the rubber banding AI is obnoxious at times, so it's hard to outsmart it. And thank you!

MCJungleKitty : Awesome! I started playing video games around the same age, but we only had an NES and SNES, and so I started to slowly get the other systems since. x3 The story was an epic one though amirite? Yoshi is always a good choice, I main him, Luigi, and Wario. And congratulations!

A user of this : I also have the same persons all the time catching up to me. Donkey Kong and Toad are real stalkers. You're welcome! My main persons are Mario and Luigi, although I have tried Wario as well and he's pretty useful too.
