Gouge it out PT was originally released as a demo by 7780s Studio, a company who, like the game that this was supposed to be a demo for, does not exist in the least. However, completion of this demo revealed what it really was. For the few of you who don't already know, PT stands for Playable Teaser. What was it a Playable Teaser for? Why, none other than a new installment in the Silent Hill series (called "Silent Hills" apparently). A project that will be worked on by game writer Hideo Kojima (most known for Metal Gear Solid), and director Guillermo del Toro ( known for many movies, but most relevant, Pans Labyrinth). Norman Reedus (Walking Dead, and Boondock Saints) will also be making an appearance as well, apparently as the main character. A decision I personally disagree with, as I feel it's better to use original characters that we have no pre-conceived notions about. PT itself is relatively short, though is a worthwhile experience. It's a game that I am sure a large number of you have yet to play, as it is a PS4 exclusive. Many of you may know this, but I am a huge fan of the Silent Hill series. I consider Silent Hill 2 to be my favorite game of all time. However, I feel that installments made after the disbanding of the original team left a lot to be desired. They simply fell short. When I heard of a possible new Silent Hill, I received the news with a certain reserved optimism however, as the most recent games showed signs of learning from other games mistakes, and moving closer back to the Silent Hill I knew and loved. While Hideo Kojima's presence in this game gave that optimism a blow (not to say he's a bad writer, I just didn't think he was a fit for this particular style of game), after playing PT, that optimism has come back full swing. In fact, I dare say, I'm excited. If this is what we can expect from the new Silent Hill game, let me just pre-order it now. PT was fantastic. Sure, it had a few jump scares, and used a few cliche's, but for the most part it was subtle, oppressive, and terrifying. First thing I will give it praise for is something I feel hasn't been captured properly in the series for awhile. And that's the feeling from your environment. In SH2 for example, the town didn't just feel unstable or screwed up. It felt Malevolent. It felt like the very walls were out to get you. Like the entire town wanted to slowly unhinge your sense of reality, tear apart your sanity, and watch you mind spiral into the darkest pits of chaos and disorder. And then, it would allow you to die. Let me tell you, that is far more terrifying than any monster you could come up with. No matter how horrifyingly rendered he may be. That's how I felt playing PT. That it wasn't just a haunting... that even the building would not let me go. And that considering what it had in store for me, death might just be a mercy. You may have noticed that I said "me" there, instead of "my character". There is a reason for that. PT has a way of drawing you in, and making you feel like you are there. Anyway, while this is a teaser, I suppose we can do a breakdown review for it. So follow me deeper, and be careful not to loose sight of me. You wouldn't want to get lost now. Graphics PT uses the Fox graphics engine created by Kojima Productions, and I have to say, it looks fantastic. The teaser is realistic looking to an eerie degree. Lighting is well implemented and realistic as well. There are shadowed corners all throughout the area, and strange and terrible creatures lurk within every single one of those shadows. At least, it will certainly look that way. The teasers sometimes disturbing level of detail, excellent lighting, and realistic graphics engine, will certainly leave you feeling like this is a real place you are in, and these events are actually happening. Given the tone of the game, I'll leave you to decide if that's a good thing. 10/10 Sound I have little to say on this point. The teaser didn't include a sound track, but the background noises all sound very realistic and will scare the hell out of you. What little voice acting there is is smooth and unsettling, and the transitions that occasionally happen are startling and will make your skin crawls. Often, random sounds will trigger that will have you jumping, or scared to move forward for fear of that is ahead. The song at the end is a beautiful version of a recognizable Silent Hill theme as well. All in all, a lot of work has been put into the sounds, and further make this teaser as terrifying as it is. 10/10 Addictiveness It's a teaser, not a full game, so naturally this is not gonna be a strong part of the experience. However, given what it is, the addictiveness is very high. At least, if you are a masochist like me. It's unsettling in a way that is not easily captured, and in a way you won't find with most modern games. If you are a horror junkie, you may find yourself running through this teaser over and over, relishing the unease it brings you, even if the outright terror disappears quickly. However, lack of any real gameplay will certainly diminish your visits, as once you have figured out what to do, and seen everything, there really isn't much else the teaser has to offer. Still, this is a teaser and not a full game (or even a demo), and rating it by those standards, 8/10 Story Surprisingly, this teaser decided to show include a bit of story. And it was the type of story that I prefer. That is, a story not completely told, but merely hinted at. And this is promising to me in a way I cannot describe. Why? Because this is the Silent Hill method of story telling. Or rather, the old method. The one recent games have forgotten. I can take Silent Hill 2, or 4, and present you with dozens of theories on the plot and the universe, because it doesn't shove everything down your thought. Surprisingly, I even have a theory about the story of this teaser. Of course the story is short, but, this is a teaser. The presence of any story at all is worth a 7 right there at least. Basically, what you know, is that you have a man that murdered his entire family, and then himself. Details about this are released little by little, either though the radio playing, or by triggered set pieces. It's obvious the murders happened a long time ago, however, the house appears to be gratly haunted. Some dialogue at the end leads us to believe the source of the haunting is not entirely what we may have thought it was however, and raises some questions as to the identity of the main character, and his connection to the events. I have my own theories, but I'll keep them to myself for now, and let you decide for yourself what you think is going on in that apartment. Still, the very fact I can do that gives the story for this teaser a 10/10 Depth Ok, basically I'm rating this by demo standards, and even by those standards the depth is low. Sure, you'll find amazing graphics, and intriguing events. Also, tons of visual effects. Still, talk all that away, and you are basically just running around a hallway and a bathroom looking at stuff. No gameplay. No exploration. And not very much length. They showed me a lot that makes me hopeful for the next Silent Hill, but not much in this department. Still, this is a teaser, and not even part of the actual game. So a low score here should be nothing to worry about. I hope. 4/10 Difficulty Wow, ok. To reach the end of this teaser, you have to do a ton of arbitrary things, and examine things in certain orders. Really, without a walk-through, it will take you awhile to figure it out. Of course, once you know how it's done, there is no difficulty at all. I gave it a 8/10 Silent Hills PT was a startling piece of horror, that stood very well on it's own. Had a bit of story that was laid out in an interesting way, breathtaking graphics and sound that pulled you in, and truly unnerving moments. All in all, I would say this teaser did it's job in an impressive way. I badly want to see what kind of Silent Hill game they produce, and I expect it to be great. This teaser has washed away all doubts that Hideo Kojima wouldn't be able to properly handle a horror game, and if this is any indication, he may just bring us one of the best Silent Hills yet. 9.5/10 If you haven't had a chance to play it, I recommend you do so. Don't bother watching a lets play of it. It's not the same, and will only....tease you. Ah Silent Hill where do I even start with this iconic, and amazing series. I don't even know if I could give this series justice really. This series is so amazing I mean seriously, the feeling of dread the first few games have giving me was legendary. This ranks with Resident Evil at least the first few games of that series to me in creepiness. This series brings back so many memories, from laughter, to pure fear, and agitation. Silent Hill 3 that particular game had one of if not my favorite character in it, Heather Mason, such an amazing character, it's truly sad though that Konami threw her under the bus, as well as the meek but awesome Harry Mason, hopefully some day, and I mean some day soon they will decide to bring these two wonderful and iconic characters back in a game or two.I really think Konami should really start showing love for the lesser more obscure characters in the Silent Hill lore. Now on to the game. The music in this game, is simply amazing, pure eeriness at it's finest, I remember there was a few |

As much as I loved P.T., is it really review-worthy? I mean, it's nothing more than a teaser, the full game still has to come out... ^^' I love your writing style, though! I love your writing style, though! |
